  • I'm a sucker for a good looking game like everyone else and maybe I've just gotten dumber, but Hellblade 2 really showed me that I need something more than just pretty visuals. While probably the best looking game I've ever played, Hellblade 2 is also one of the most boring because it isn't very engaging as a game. I think the best way to enjoy this piece of art, is to just watch someone else play it as though it were a movie.

It looks like they are not even doing something wild with the level of realism they can achieve, it's just nice landscapes and sunsets. Horror games might be crazy in the future tho

The rocks look REALLY good in the light. They should be able to do some crazy stuff in the future, I guess we just have to wait.

The first game was very similar. Really beautiful and atmospheric, but I didn't even end up finishing it because I got bored a few chapters in.

Good to know. I'll watch a RUclips video of it to get the story experience.

I mean to be fair, Hellblade does have a semblance of a gameplay: It has puzzle and combat, but not so much for a world interactivity. I'd argue that rather than an interactive movie, Hellblade is more of a middle ground between a movie and a game. It has been like that since the first game.
A lot of games does this too, especially in indie space, where they focuses more on the story rather than the gameplay, making it more of an interactive movie rather than a game, and it has been an endless discussion too since over a decade ago: Could you consider walking simulator as a game?
But I your point is more of this: rather than the gameplay itself, I think it's more about the price point, 60 USD is rather a hefty price for a walking simulator.

I like your points. There is that endless debate around if walking simulators are games and I may need to cover one to add my 2 cents...But even those I think are more "interactive" as you have total control most of the time.
I'd love to watch Hellblade as you don't get to play much of it or at least, that's what it feels like. You are right, if it was like $30, I would be way less harsh on it.

An interactive movie would be like the tell tale games or Detroit Become Human, where the choices you make are the gameplay and leads to each gamer having a personalized unique experience. Hellblade 2 doesn’t even have that. Calling this a video game at all is a stretch as there’s so little interactivity that actually matters

Oh the Telltale games are fantastic. Those games are a lot like the old choose your own adventure books. I think Hellblade is more like a movie because nothing you do matters. There aren't even choices to make - everyone is just playing through the same motions.

It's got plenty of substance, but you need to have a functioning brain and some level of emotional intelligence to appreciate it

Tired of these games that lack any real depth
