Why Doesn't Andromeda FEEL Like Mass Effect?

  • How can a game that exists in the same universe as Mass Effect feel so different and leave such a negative impression on fans of the series? Without a doubt, Mass Effect is my favourite gaming trilogy and like many, I was extremely let down by Andromeda. With some help (and a lot of restraint) I'll take a look a what made the original trilogy so great and how Andromeda failed to live up to the (admittedly high) expectations set by fans.

Some people did like Andromeda but honestly, I would skip it if you're hoping for more epic Mass Effect. Wait for the new Mass Effect whenever that comes out.

Andromeda sounds not so awful after the video, but better keep out anyway

Don't think of it as Mass Effect and you'll have a much better time.

The characters in Andromeda I thought ranged from mildly interesting, to OK, to negligible, to boring, to maybe even awful at times. But no one truly great. Andromeda also suffered from poor thematics. Despite the grand initiative, everything just seemed boring and ordinary. I don't think the utopian overtones helped either (everything being white and blue lol). It was too hopeful, and yet so lacking in substance. The Kett were also an enemy that, while new, felt all too familiar, like they were just a weaker off-shoot of something we've already faced in the Milky Way. Even though this game had pretty good combat and some good mechanics and ideas, it essentially failed to meet expectations of what Mass Effect needs to be.
Taken on its own, Andromeda would seem like a perfectly decent and enjoyable game if you're not being too hypercritical (minus bugs and some jarring/fidgety animations), but it's nowhere near the level of prestige and refinement of the Shepard trilogy. It is easily the worst game in the series. Some try to say, well, Andromeda is only the first game and would've done progressively better if it had its own trilogy. Possible, but also not a guarantee, especially given the state of BioWare at the time of its inception. What's more, ME1 is clearly the superior game in terms of characters, narrative, and I'd even say roleplay. So I don't think that's a good argument to afford it merit. Its best points lie in its combat, its wheels-on-the-ground exploration system, and its weapon customization system, and the Remnant vaults. But it's not enough to prop all its other faults up, especially after how disappointing the ME3 ending was. Fans expected better.
Basically, the Andromeda Initiative is failed, which is why I think they know they have to go back to the Milky Way and salvage what was lost. They can't make a direct sequel (at least not at this point), but they can use Liara to bridge the gap and bring some kind of closure. Hopefully.. hopefully.. Liara is able to reconstruct Shepard. I don't think we need another Shepard trilogy (although I wouldn't be opposed to it), but I do think we need to be reminded why we love this series, and a last ride with Shepard could get us there. But it has to be done right. No small task, but it's something that already has an outline.

That's quite the essay and very well put. Andromeda isn't the worst game ever and even has some good elements like combat. Its downfall is that it had the weight of a very successful trilogy to live up to and just couldn't. Here is hoping they do tap into that magic again for the next one.
