An extension to my blog, A RUclips CHANNEL! I will be posting videos and things created on here from now on.... enjoy!
My name is Gareth Cooke, I am a member of the Barnsley Athletic Club. I am documenting my travels, completing races and challenges, overall whilst enjoying my running.
My channel will include a variety of things whilst I'm on the Ramble and on the run. Whether this is talking about the latest news in the running world, a running race I've completed, my typical training week or nutrition involved. I'm also an avid running shoe connoisseur, and will regular buy a new pair to try out and have a go at! So keep listening, keep watching, and Just Keep Running!
The title ‘therunningmaninblue’ came from choosing to wear the same blue top when racing before I joined a running club. I have previously run for Penistone Footpath Runners & Athletic Club; making the transfer to the blue side again in 2021.

Doncaster 10k - finishing 2nd woman with a personal best!
Running the Doncaster 10k, with the aftermath of Storm Bert, high winds and rain. It wasn’t the most ideal conditions for fast running, with around 3000 entrants. The Doncaster 10k is a big city feel event, setting off from the Race Course and venturing into the city centre, before embarking on a short out and back before finishing at the race course. On a typical day, it promises fast times, super flat and a fast field to run well.
There was just one of us running the 10k today, with myself on the injury bench. In reality neither of us have done Doncaster 10k at the same time, with one of us being sidelined every year we have run here.

Are you running balanced? How to understand and improve ground contact balance? Garmin dynamics
Просмотров 85612 часов назад
Our Garmin gives us some interesting running dynamics, sometimes with not a lot of information on what they actually mean or how we can improve them. One of the most important in my own training is Ground contact time balance, the amount of time we spend utilising our right or left leg. Is one leg stronger than the other? Is there an injury that is dictating your ability to perform. How can we ...
Training week and what’s happening with the Valencia Marathon? Will it go ahead? Discussion!

Training for a marathon is hard, is a battle, between the mind, the physical, the social, and life. It can consume your life, take over your world and it takes some real strength at times. It peaks, troughs, nothing is ever linear, in anything. Knee deep into what is the Valencia Marathon block and Valencia has been knocked as a city, raising a doubt as to whether the marathon will be going ahe...
How to recover after an injury // different types of muscle contractions for a runner!

The comebacks are always the best bit, I love a project and the best project you can make out of this, is yourself. It’s been a month since I last ran what I would call ‘properly,’ I’m now fully in with the recovery and rebuilding of strength. Injuries are all a part of the journey and the story of being a runner. It’s how you overcome them that matter the most. No point sitting back and gettin...
Rehab through injury for a runner // strength and conditioning, cross training, never hurt anybody.

A part of the running journey, notoriously, is picking up the odd niggle here and there. It goes hand in hand with progress, barriers, achievements, setbacks. It’s how you overcome them, use them as a tool for learning to educate yourself more and more about your body. It’s almost as guaranteed as death and taxes. This week I’ve been on the rehab train, doing everything I can to manage my niggl...
Yorkshire Marathon: the race that wasn’t to be // take a dose of Vitamin N!

The Yorkshire Marathon, a race that I hold quite well and truly close to my head and heart. It means a lot to me, one I have frequented every year since its inception in 2013. Since my first initial footsteps in this world of running. 2024 however it wasn’t to be, I’ve run well here but this year I won’t be toeing the line. The plan from the outset was to use Yorkshire Marathon as a stepping st...
Armley parkrun: some tourism on a brilliant course with mixed terrain! Could this be a fast one?
Просмотров 628Месяц назад
Armley parkrun in Leeds, it was my third NENDY (nearest event not done yet) roughly a 30 minutes drive, so a complete crime that in my 54 different venues we hadn't yet paid it a visit. We frequent the Leeds - Liverpool canal on the regular for our Sunday long run and training efforts. It is literally a stone's throw from the location we park. So today brought us to Armley parkrun, a wonderful ...
Valencia Marathon TRAINING SERIES: what is MARANOIA and how to deal with it?
Просмотров 527Месяц назад
Maranoia is a term thrown around the running scene, the pre race stresses and nerves can get all too real, experience could tell you that they aren’t to be messed with and experience could tell you to ignore them. Splitting the actual signs from the phantom niggles and injuries can be vague. This week I am a week out from Yorkshire Marathon, my warm up jog, to get the distance under the belt ah...
A focus on nutrition for a runner // 8 weeks out from the Valencia Marathon

Nutrition, food, healthy diets and maintaining weight can be an absolute minefield. A lot of people have differing opinions, understandings and takings. Preaching different to what they practice themselves. Your diet can be more worthwhile than your training, nailing it and getting it right can be the difference between a personal best or personal worst. Finding out exactly what works for you, ...

Fantastic running as always Naomi! 🎉
Absolutely brilliant proud you got PB Naomi 💪🏃♀️🏃♀️ Hope your injury recovers quickly Gareth
Another great film and well run again Naomi - You are just right with the thinking - no that's is not the quickest I am ever going to run in a race - I always believed I could run quicker-in the past - think that was shown when I did my fastest ever half in 1992 when I was 36 ( 74.56 at Lytham St Annes ) I had been doing between 75 and 76 regularly on hilly courses such as Ackworth for many years - everything just clicked on that day - Never say Never !!!
Congrats on the PB Naomi 🎉
Enjoyed that 😊
Great run Naomi, congratulations on your P.B.
Well done! It wasn't fun out there yesterday. Was hoping to pick it up on the last mile but that wind had the better of me
Congrats for a good race in difficult conditions. Hope you get your treadmill and would love to see the type of sessions that you and Gareth would use on it.
congrats Naomi, a PB in tough conditions!
Well done for your pb good luck in Marathon
Congrats on the PB in very tough conditions. Hope the injury gets dealt with soon Gareth. I'm coming back from a calf strain myself and it's so frustrating being injured.
Well done Naomi on your PB. I agree with the wind having done a half marathon yesterday. Plus nought wrong with a vegan winning being a vegan runner myself!
Well done Naomi, you were running with a smile on your face when you passed me on Ledger Way.
Congrats on the PB
Smashed it👊
Great to bump into you both when we were on our way out at Doncaster👍
How many hops do you consider that you need to do before you start pushing on again?
Interesting watch. My left glute has been niggling for a while, it’s okay in training but hinders me slightly racing, think i might do some focused exercises on it with a few more reps on weaker side. Cheers
Great video, Never had any niggles on my right leg always my left leg
Interesting stuff again Gareth - How things have moved on since my day !! - all I did was run and go and work hard in a warehouse - only time I did any leg work - weights , raises etc was when I was recovering from an injury !! I now have arthritis in my right knee which affects my right foot placement. My right leg is the strongest by a long way and I have poor balance on my weaker left . Now I do not run much , I do indoor cycling and walk more and do leg exercises , leg weights etc now to try and get stronger and more balanced - not having much success as my arthritis flares up if I do too much - I hope to carry on running for a few more years yet and I now accepted than my competive days are over
Some of the quieter roads, near to where I live, are a nightmare. The camber is severe and you almost feel as though one leg is shorter than the other. I try to run in the middle of the road when it's quiet or make sure I run back on the opposite side. Keep plugging away Gareth.
I believe it is not for us runners to say whether the holding the marathon will help or hinder the recovery process. In my opinion, this decision should be made by the authorities in Valencia and we should respect that decision, either way. If they decide that holding the marathon will be positive to the recovery process (both from a psychological and a financial perspective) then as runners we should support that decision. I'm not saying my view is correct, but just stating my opinion.
I agree with you entirely.. and I am registered for this marathon and coming from Canada with family in tow.
Seen your comments, and have massive respect for you cancelling. I've done the same. Frustrating for many reasons and maybe the situation will improve by 1st December, but ultimately I wasn't sure if the event will come across badly, so it just didn't feel right to go.
How can you even still plan on going. Local 🇪🇸 here….. Obviously condolences to families???? You don’t give a dam do you. I have 6 friends who canceled already including me.
Fortunately we have come to the same conclusion as yourselves, we won’t be attending the event on the 1st of December, neither will we be attending Valencia, due to the reasons we described in the video. Wouldn’t want to put extra strain on local services and morally wouldn’t feel correct. Understandably how it is documented in the media throughout the UK is very different to how it feels on the ground and in Spain, most of the stuff I have read has been from Spanish news sources.
Target Houston mara in Jan?🤩
Same sentiment for Valencia 10k in January you reckon?
I’m in the same boat regarding Valencia. Last 2 weeks of training hasn’t gone great due to a hamstring ‘niggle’ Ethically I feel it shouldn’t go ahead. Also hyrox the week before has been delayed for the reasons you mentioned.
Yep all the other events have seemingly made quick decisions, I suppose it depends on the size of the event.
Good to see Naomi is looking for other races - that hard training will pay off for whichever event you manage to get in and great to see Gareth is planning ahead for London in the Spring - Just forget running in Valencia - it's a shocking tragedy and life is more important than running after all
I did not know about the flooding. But he's terrible In thailand they had a lot of flooding.
Hopefully they cancel the race. It doesn't seem appropriate for it to go ahead, especially given the protests directed towards the regional government.
Yep, was hoping for an official announcement today, but we’ve now decided we won’t be attending the marathon anyway.
Describing the week as good after what happened is odd. Even posting about if it will be a marathon. Help people instead ?
Might not be correct decision but I think it will go ahead 35000 runners in Valencia be a boast to the local economy. Enjoying your videos Gareth keep at it 🏃♂️🏃♂️
That’s also the other side of the argument but sometimes financial pressures might not be the morally correct thing… we’ve now cancelled and won’t be attending on the 1st of December.
i dont think it should go ahead , a lot of these so called you tube runners want to do this to get content regardless of the situation for thier viewing , these guys who run much better than me , wld not bother with this event if it was an event for runners like me , it is selfish bragging , i do parkrun in 26.03 at the moment , and i did 55.30 for 10k the other day , so im not in this bracket , i wish more runners like me would post cntent , more than bragging sub 20 5k runners who cry cause they dont think they are good , i personally hope it gets cancelled for all the runners lol
Personally I don't think you should go, regardless if it goes ahead. A lot of the locals are very angry with the way the government just left them to die and suffer. Just imagine the look if the marathon goes ahead with thousands of police officers and medical assistance over the course, but they couldn't give that service to the locals that were left to fend for themselves and you know how many died and how many lost their homes and livelihoods.
Obviously seeing stuff through the media can be different to how it feels on the ground and what is shown in the media as well. Don’t think it would be wise for it to go ahead and/or put pressure on local services, we’ve now cancelled anyway.
They will literally be policing football games with more people attending the week before.
Great to hear you are sorting it with the exercises etc - and being sensible cutting your mileage and pace down until you have recovered -- If the Marathon doesn't happen in December for you - A good and steady build up to a Spring one - Keep smiling - from the man who has had a 1,000 injuries and living with Arthritis !!!
Wishing you a speedy recovery! Having been there with Achilles issue about 15 months ago, I immediately got it treated and went to to rehab and came back fitter & stronger winning a GB Masters Gold medal. You will be great when you back to full swing! As a side note, why do so many runners think they know more than professional physios or podiatrists?
If you have Achilles tendinopathy then your physio should have recommended the Alfredson protocol.
Injuries suck. Unfortunately, they are a part of competitive running. Injured my left calf 4 weeks ago (at the end of a race). Started back too soon (after a few days). Did some online research & found this. I am finding it very useful. You might too. Cheers. ruclips.net/video/Nuxd36P-Z8w/видео.html
I’ll be at Darfield next week 👍 Don’t forget the protein.
How many years/ marathons did you do before you got under 3 hours? Do you think its a case of getting the experience and building your fitness?
I started running in 2013, and ran two marathons a 4.04 at Milton Keynes and 3.19 at Yorkshire. I broke 3 hours in my 3rd and 4th marathon with a 2.55 and 2.58. Experience definitely helps, it can be invaluable, respecting the distance and understanding what level of training you need to do, to get yourself over that line. With a decent background and stepping up through the distances, no reason why a recreational runner couldn’t break 3 hours in their first marathon. I’m saying ‘recreational runner’ because you’d expect someone who is paid to compete on a level to be capable of doing so… and I don’t believe in the term, amateur and professional 🤣
@ thanks for replying, ive done quite similar times to you, ran my first in 3.52, second in 3.26, then my 3rd in 3.07 recently, all at yorkshire, unsure if to go for it in the spring or wait until yorkshire again next year.
Good luck with the recovery. Interesting to see the S&C. I'm sure you'll be back on it soon 👌🏼
Might be more S+C content this week as the healing progressing. It’s been an interesting one.
Keep head up Gareth you are strong and you will be better soon. I'm proud of you and naomi 👏 keep sharing your path and we'll keep following.
Thank you so much!
You need some pain without medication to allow inflammation. Inflammation Is required to healing.
Hi Gareth, loving the optimism in the video, and you will come back stronger. I’m currently lying on a sun lounger in Tunisia, contemplating the hotel treadmill, but as I’m post a recent bout of COVID ,there is a still a lack of confidence as to where my lungs are at. Plus there’s no sign of a defib anywhere near the gym! The finish line at Valencia for you will seem a lot sweeter for all these current trials buddy. Keep the faith!
Always come back stronger fella! That’s what it’s all about 👊
You will get there bit by bit - Keep positive - Keep smiling - Injuries are just a part of being a runner- suppose they are even character building in a way - I go back to doing peoples family trees when I get injured !!!
I’ve done our family tree on both sides, it’s definitely an interesting past time.
@therunningmaninblue Done my tree , my wife Julie's and plenty of friends and workmates over the years - Yes I have had plenty of injuries !!! lol
I can relate to saddle soreness. I am on the bike as I come back from calf issue.
Last 10 minutes of todays ride was a tough one 😅
I used to think that about cycling but then I got an indoor smart trainer and started using zwift. It’s been a godsend, as I got injured 4 weeks before Yorkshire, and I was able to maintain a decent level of fitness and make the start line.
Definitely clocking the hours up on the bike to keep me from going insane, podcasts help pass the time as well.
how would you rate it for difficulty against barnsley or graves? Also, I have to admit, usign the navigation function on the garmin is about 10 or 20m behind - like drivign through leeds with a satnav - tells you what turn you SHOULD have taken 5s ago :D
It’s much easier than either of those two, at least 30 seconds quicker than Barnsley naturally. But the grass / mud will come into play during the autumn and winter months, so might slow down times. You’ll need a dry day.
@therunningmaninblue heading there this weekend. Fingers crossed it stays dry :)
You don't half bloody moan...it's only running 😅😅😅
Good decision. Nothing to gain by running the race and potentially a lot to lose.
