Добавлен 5 янв 2018
Here at Raildig we work primarily with Z scale (1:220) model trains. We also do photo, print and web work for the Z scale manufacturer American Z Line (AZL) as well as for Ztrack Magazine. We are a busy little bee! We also have a growing line of Raildig brand original Z scale model train accessories, available through most major Z scale dealers.
Like many businesses I think, we're playing with video now with no clear expectations of where it'll go for us, but I have to admit it is fun. Stick with us, subscribe and if you want to get in touch, please feel free... we love talking trains :)

5-Minute Epoxy Rant
We use 5-minute epoxy here at Raildig all the time, everything from building with XPS foam to repairs where a CA glue may not be quite enough. Instead of using the common syringe style dispensers I prefer the 4 oz bottles sold in a pair where you get one bottle of resin and one of hardener.
I recently went through 4 separate purchases of epoxy, 2 from Loctite and 2 from Devcon. Out of the 4 tries, only one package was usable and even then, one of the seals on a bottle arrived broken. I was able to return the defective packs but it was quite the waste of time, frustrating too!

Coffman Clamp Replacement Pads

I've used the Coffman right angle clamps for years, both the Original Right Clamp and the Mini Right Clamp. These clamps are invaluable when you need to attach flat material together at a perfect 90 degree angle. The cushioned foam pads on my clamps needed replacing after all these years so I thought I'd walk through the replacement pad process for you. Coffman Clamps www.coffmaneng.com/shop

Recently my old 4" digital caliper threw in the towel, flashing random numbers on screen, turning on and off for no obvious reason, etc. Time to go shopping for a new caliper! One feature I've wanted for some time is a thumb roller adjustment wheel for more precise adjustments. I went with the Rexbeti 6" digital caliper and so far, so good. Diorama Wood Veneer Fascia

In two previous videos, we looked at tools and techniques to get a very presentable finish on small diorama scenes, using Mod Podge Hard Coat and also making our own sanding boards to keep things nice and square. This time out we went full woodworker. Well, more like a hobby crafter, but I think it worked! We bought some thin red oak wood veneer and covered our XPS foam with it. I think the res...
Proxxon Hot Wire MDF Fence Kit
Просмотров 9 тыс.3 года назад
My Proxxon hot wire foam cutter is one of my favorite tools for making perfectly square cuts in extruded foam, or XPS. A much talked about shortcoming of the Proxxon is its miter fence. I find it has a bit too much play in it when cutting larger pieces of foam. I've seen a few commercial and a few DIY solutions out there, and the one I've gone for in this video is from a US company located in T...
DIY Hobby Sanding Boards | 3M Super 77 XPS Foam

We started out with a simple DIY sanding board video and once we got to the 3M Super 77 adhesive, we had to keep going and make a little diorama out of XPS foam! I've been using this simple idea for a perfectly flat sanding board for years and thought I'd make a few new ones as the original had become a bit rough around the edges. Our First Solder Pot For Tinning Wires

A solder pot is one of those little tools I’ve been meaning to purchase to tin the wires we use in our Raildig products, but over time you get pretty fast with a flux pen and regular soldering iron, so I kept putting off this purchase. Reduce Stalling With The Rokuhan Shorty Chassis
Просмотров 5 тыс.4 года назад
I'm a huge fan of the Rokuhan Shorty Z scale locomotive chassis. It's very reasonably priced, it's a great platform for small projects and overall it very reliable. If I have one complaint it's the weight of the chassis, it's incredibly light! The lightweight nature of this chassis can reduce the contact between wheels and rails and cause stalling, requiring the dreaded "tap, tap" on the layout...

Thanks, I couldn't figure out where are couple bits went and you helped a ton. Now to get to crafting
I'm really glad this helped, thanks very much for letting me know! Definitely have fun with this tool, it's one of those "not sure if I need it tools" that has worked out great for me, hopefully it will for you too.
Amazing content to watch, but please take care of the metal swarf it contains lead 💀☠
Thanks for your input on this. I always keep a small USB fan to the side when working up close with glues, solder, airbrush, etc. I've tried the lead free version but just don't care for it too much, so I take basic precautions like the fan and fresh air with an open window or two... even in the cold weather. I'm not entirely sure just how much small lead amounts actually matter, but for the price of the small USB fan and an open window... I figure it's a small precaution to take that doesn't really have a downside. Thanks again for your comment here, it's appreciated!
@@Raildig yups fan actually does the trick (even better with hepa filters), but from a different pov leftover lead will contaminate your surroundings (hurts others unintentionally). I mean you should dispose it safely(i collect them and other microplastic in plastic bottles), unfortunately even small amounts of lead isn't safe or acceptable i mean life is priceless so yeah just take care. Thanks
That's an awesome video. I'm the owner of GameCraft Miniatures, I appreciate you giving my fence and try and I really appreciate you doing this video. I will modify the design so that cutout you made at the top of the fence is part of future fences.
Thanks! This fence gets used all the time and it's held up beautifully. That little notch up at the top will be helpful for future buyers of your fence, thanks for responding to this suggestion.
Oh yes this is the way to go for soldering, I will be doing this technique for wiring although for my electrical. For some reasons this technique gives some people a stroke. 😂😂😂Awesome upload and info
I have to admit is it weird having a pot of molten metal on the desk or tabletop right in front of you! A spill could do some pretty serious physical damage. I guess like any tool though, don't get complacent around it. Glad you liked the video, thanks!
THANKS A LOT for this video!
You're very welcome, thank you for dropping the note to us!
Thank you!
You are very welcome, glad you liked this! This fence is still holding up beautifully after 3 years now.
@Raildig That's so good to know! I just ordered my Proxxon, and I'm trying to learn all I can. You're the best.
@@HallenaQuinzel See, now I'm going to have an inflated ego... LOL! The Proxxon has been incredibly useful and this 3rd party fence just makes it more so. Once you get it assembled and get the hang of it, it's such a nice tool to have around. I keep a supply of the pink foam from Home Depot on hand all the time and just creating exact sized foam pieces has been handier then I'd have thought. Just take your time when assembling and do lots of tests cuts initially and I think you'll love this tool as well. This MDF fence company also makes a jig for cutting round shapes. I bought that one too but I have not yet even opened the package. I have to get to this one soon... maybe I'll shoot another video on this round jig.
Informative, got it for free just wanted to learn more about it. Love knowing it cools to a warm temp after 30 min.
Glad you got a bit of useful info from the video, thanks for letting me know! These really are useful things to have around.
I really like the comparison. How would you compare mod podge hard coat with minwax polyacrylic? I think the latter is more waterproof
Thanks! I haven't used Minwax poly on this one, just the Mod Podges and the Elmers. Out of the three I think the Mod Podge Hard Coat did the best job and while it did a nice job, I've now been using thin wood veneer on small projects like this as it gives it max protection and it's really only a bit more difficult to work with than say, a tough cardboard. ruclips.net/video/nKYc3KahuKY/видео.html

That's really great to hear!!! Thanks for letting sharing that.
@@Raildig Where did you get the lamps from if i may ask; i have searched everywhere; building another one
@@end2endsolutions145 Sure thing... I just had to dig up my old order and these were from AliExpress several years back, here's the link: www.aliexpress.us/item/2251832123474828.html. Nice video! Great narration and camera work.
Thanks very much, I appreciate that! Happy to say this is still a tool I use often. I've bought fun looking tools in the past and use them for a month, then they get stored away. This is something I keep handy and it actually gets put to work.
An excellent intro and how to, thank you!
Thanks, I appreciate that! -John
I'm so appreciative of resources like this that help understand various methods. Thank you.
I'm glad we could be of some help, or at least interest! Thank you for the very nice comment, you've just picked up my evening :) John
Just got mine, look forward to replacing the crap one it came with lol
Yeah, I don't get that included Proxxon fence design at all. Maybe I'm being too harsh on it... but I never use the thing. Even had Proxxon done some kind of simple clamp / clip on the far end, that would have been a 100% improvement. I'm just happy the Proxxon itself is such a good tool and that a great fence alternative is readily available at a good price! Enjoy your Proxxon!!!
Are these pots after use easy to clean and get ready for next use?
Hi, no cleaning necessary... jut let the solder cool off and store the pot away until the next use! It's a simple and elegant little tool.
Great video, wouldn’t it be easier for you paint the board first dry then add track? Thanks George subscribed
Hi George. Yes, your suggestion would have been the way to do it but the track was already in place, pretty much permanently, with a thin bead of epoxy on the edges of the track. Here's the original video showing the track on the board with no color: ruclips.net/video/eTsPO1sfcbw/видео.html Before this video, I removed the decals I originally had. I then added the paint in this video, then added decals again! A lot of work for a tiny, tiny board :) Thanks for subscribing!
Durch die Alufolie sind die Berge instabil. Zeitungspapier als Träger für die Gipsbinden sind eine bessere Variante. Aber, eine hervorragende Arbeit. 🛠️🤩👍
The foil really just acts as a temporary framework for the plaster cloth, IMO, so no structural strength. But I feel the same for the newspaper, it's a frame upon which to build. Still, your opinion is valid and I appreciate it!

What size is the board?
I don't have this board anymore, it went over to Ztrack Magazine but here's the basic loop that was used: ztrackcenter.com/rokuhan-shorty/R081, so I'd guess this board was about 5"+ wide and maybe 10"+ long. I think I picked this board up at Michael's Crafts.
Another great video, my friend...horrible luck with the bottles...but it is amazing that companies can't seem to figure out how to keep a bottle sealed...then there are others that you wonder if you will ever get it open...lol
Thanks! It is truly baffling on these seals. As a follow up I did contact Loctite, they were apathetic. Also contacted Devcon, no response. I wouldn't have expected an emergency board call from them, but even a tepid boilerplate response would have been something. On the suggestion of garrettswoodworx1873's here in the comments section, I will try BSI next time.
@@Raildig it definitely can't hurt to try...
You might want to try BSI (Bob Smith Industries) 5 minute epoxy if you haven't already done so. I've used it for years on everything from RC boats, cars and aircraft to model railroading to woodturning and literally never had a problem. One caveat when purchasing: When they advertise a 4.5oz package, that's the combined volume of the two bottles. If you want "4oz" bottles, buy the 9oz package. (Their CA is also great!)
I'd used BSI stuff years ago, didn't know they made a 5-minute epoxy. After I'm done with this current Devcon, I think I'll give it a try, thanks for that tip!
@@Raildig You're welcome! I believe they make 5, 15 & 30 minute versions. I mostly use the "4.5 oz combined" size because it's convenient for the volume I use and I can get it locally but get the 9 oz version when they run out of the smaller size and I've never had shelf life issues.
@@garrettswoodworx1873 I have the patience of a gnat, so it's the 5 minute version for me... LOL. The only 5-minute I can get locally in the bottles is from the local marina, I live by the water and we have several marine supply stores here, that didn't even occur to me as I'm not a boat person. I look forward to trying the BSI next time.
Nice layout! ❤
Thank you! I really like these tiny, fun pieces. Just nice to have a bit of fun with the trains. I did another video where I dressed this layout up a bit. Even at this small size, there's always something more to do! ruclips.net/video/EaPkqmR7mBw/видео.html
Hi John. Great job on the video. Only 2 comments I would add. 1. After I made the original clamps and tried them out, I accidentally glued a part to the aluminum angle while using the very thin Super Glue. Fortunately I had left a little oil on the surface of the angle so the part came right off the angle with no problem. Since then, as part of the production process, I spray the angles with silicone spray and wipe off the excess. The silicone film acts as a mold release to prevent accidentally gluing the parts to the angles. I also use glues with a slightly higher viscosity. 2. I have found that WD40 works as well as GooGone for removing glue residue and it is not as messy. It also washes off with soap and water.
Thanks Randy, Wiping on a thin coat of silicone is a great idea to prevent any excess glue sticking to the aluminum angle, I'll do that today! On the liquid cleaner, I have to say I was really curious about the Goof Off, and it is a heck of a potent cleaner. Good tip about the WD40 as an alternative! Thanks for making such great tools for model makers, they really are incredibly useful. -John, Raildig
Great job John..now you can build like a crazy...side note...that goof off stuff is gnarly...I'm surprised it didn't eat thru your gloves...lol
Thanks Mark! I have to admit, this being the first video for me in awhile and the using the new camera... I've got lots more rust to shake off! I had to get the first one done, and since I'm a big fan of these clamps, it all worked out. I didn't think the Goof Off was that aggressive, definitely not for every situation but it worked well here. I'll keep an eye on using it, and the glove eating going forward. Thanks!
Nice job
Thank you!
Hello! Train beginner here! Thank you so much for this helpful video! How/what did you use to did you secure the track to the board it's on? :0
Glad you like this video, thanks! I don't recall exactly what I used but I'd guess I went with a paper thin coat of 2-part epoxy on underside / edges of the plastic roadbed, and I do mean paper thin so it doesn't squish-up (technical term there!) around the track. I prefer this to something like track nails as it gives a really clean appearance in a project like this. I use 2-part epoxy ALL the time on these small projects as it's just so handy, clean and you don't need a lot. Of course the potential downside is once the epoxy is cured... it's not moving! Of course that's an upside too.
lmao! You have a tunnel into what only can be described as a mole hill and you're worried about realism? Give us a break!

Great stuff there, I agree! So far I've just been doing simple straight cuts using a fence from GC Mini.
@Raildig I just bought mine about a week ago. Took too long to get the wire secured. If I saw your video I would have saved a bit of time.
Amazing! I have an extra Märklin Z Scale starter set and I think this is a great idea. I will need a larger base perhaps.
I believe you would need a larger base, even with the smallest Marklin 0-6-0 loco. This board was done so small as I used the smallest radius Rokuhan track produced and it was just a fun challenge. A big reason I love these small (in this case micro!) layouts is you can almost build one for every season or holiday and have a great, portable finished little board running trains. You can build these micro layouts on almost any kind of base. A little self promotion here, but this other video we did: ruclips.net/video/EaPkqmR7mBw/видео.html, you can easily hang this one on a wall when you're not working on it or when it's finished as a little wall art! Give it a try, and thanks for watching this video and commenting!
This is by far the best video for setting up. Made the process so easy. Thank you!!
Thanks for letting us know this helped. Have fun with your Proxxon!
