Ignition 101: Distributor and Timing Basics EXPLAINED
Great video explaining my issue. Today in central Florida we had a real "cold front". No, not 68 degrees but in the 40's. 🥶. My 383 SB Blueprint engine came with a manual choke Edelbrock and installed the electric kit. Thanks for the tips! 👍🤜🤛
That’s awesome. 40 in Florida is cold. Glad to hear you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching.
At 2:59 while explaining the operation that the bimetal spring warming from the electricity pulls down on the choke assembly you finish with "that's what gives you the choke". I know what you meant but it could be interpreted as the warming of the spring 'giving you the choke' and not in the context of the entire operation. If anyone misunderstood, the choke is 'on' when the spring is cold and the warming of the spring disengages the choke. He shows this a bit later in the video. Also, if you are new to electric chokes, the initial starting procedure is typically: 1. Turn the ignition to the 'ON" or "RUN" position. 2. Press the gas pedal to the floor and return. 3. Crank the engine. This is make sure the choke is engaged and provides a bit of fuel for the initial start.
Yes good catch. I hope that didn’t confuse people. As you mentioned what I meant and I think most people understand was that the choke is applied from the start. The warming of the bimetallic spring reduces the choke effect and opens the choke horn as time elapses. Thank you for throwing in the extra clarification and thanks for watching.
Great Idea! Can’t wait for you to do my F250 and Civic Type R
Anything for the longa’s.
I am trying to tune my new engine swap with a new 750 brawler identical to this. I am having issues but i think after watching this i am comfortable making all adjustments now. Question - on the vacuum port, are you saying hook the gauge to one of the 3/8 ports?
I’m glad the video helped. That’s exactly what it was made for. Yes, normally the 3/8 ports are full manifold vacuum. Just make sure it’s not a timed vacuum port. If you plug into it and have a normal vacuum reading at all times then it’s full manifold and you’re ready to tune. Thanks for watching.
LOL. My steering wheel horn on my 87 K5 has the same crack in it.
Hahaha. It’s funny how all cars of similar make and model are susceptible to the same issues lol
A couple of K-5 guys over here in AZ looking to 6.0 our sad 350 TBI's. Thanks for the info.
The tbi on the 350 is the real culprit in my opinion. A 350 is a badass engine otherwise but the ls swap is king in my k5. I’m very happy with it. Have fun with it and good luck with the build.
Great video my squirters are too small I learned that watching your video
That’s awesome. Toss a bigger set in your hot rod and let er rip. Thanks for watching.
Did you have any clearance issues with the oil pan to the front crossmember?
No not at all thankfully. I used a truck pan so it was just right for what I needed. Thanks for watching.
Is there really such a thing as a first gen junker ?
I agree. It would have to be really really far gone for me to not build it. I guess I’ll just drain my bank account building it. Thanks for watching Eric.
This is an amazing diy great job !!!!
Thank you for watching. Hopefully it works the way I plan.
Awesome job brother, that was a lot of work and I hope you make a killing doing this. Never thought i would see the day that the Yukon got new hoops!
Finally some new tires for the Yukon. First new set since 1400bc
Very cool 👍
Thanks brother. I appreciate it.
Hell yeah Thanks 🙏
Thank YOU. Lol
Wow, very cool. I like the way you setup the circuit breaker box and shop air. Nice job.
Yeah I needed a way to keep it safe and look as professional as possible. This allows me to shit down circuits easily and gives me compressed air where ever I may need it without running hoses all over the floor
I'm going to have to watch this again. I guess i'm dumb, because i fail to see how the electric choke works. Is it actually opening the butterflies? I tried slapping a 4160 on my car right out of the box. I adjust the idle mixture per some videos, 1.5 turns out and the thing wouldn't start. Seemed like it wasn't getting any air. Choke plate was completely closed so propping it open got it started, but it would almost die at idle and eventually started smoking. I loosened the choke screws and turned it to the right until it started to open, but that caused it to idle over 1500rpms and wouldn't idle down even with the curb idle screw all the way out.
So the way the choke works is that it limits air intake when it’s cold to make up for the lack of atomization and the density of the cold air. Like temporary artificial richening of the mixture. It takes some playing with to get right and you kinda only get one chance a day because you can only tune it the engine is cold. You’re not dumb, everything automotive related is a learning experience. As far as the super high idle and hard start, maybe take a look for vacuum leaks. Also check that it’s not still hung up on the high idle cam itself. You can back the screw all the way out and it won’t come down if it’s jammed on the cam. But hitting the throttle should pull it off the cam. Good luck brother, stick with it you’ll get it.
If you got this car for less than 8-10 K,you done good.If you got it for less than 5K,you stole it.I can't believe I said that.
I done good. And yes I couldn’t agree more. I love Camaros but I can’t believe what has happened to the price of project cars in the last few years. I will say a lot of people forget that location matters as well. The same car will sell different in two different places. In New York everything is insanely high. Lucky me lol. Thanks for watching.
im in the process of doing a ls swap on my 82 k5 blazer and these have helped out alot
@@shadygraphics4266 that’s great to hear. The modern engine in a classic truck is such a cool setup. Im really happy with mine. Good luck on your project. Hopefully you’re able to enjoy it real soon. Thanks for watching.

When you have a lift you try not to use it 😂😂😂
@@azjohn520 story of my life on this one. Two lifts at the garage and get in rolling around in the gravel on my knees.
I think giving people a better idea of what it takes to do projects like these is super good of you. It does them a service to know that the shit isn’t easy, and it’s definitely not quick. I’ve always said that the sliding scale of time on a project is inversely proportional to the finished quality of whatever you did. The more time you spend on it, the better the finished product you’ll have. The faster you get something done the more you have to cut corners. It’s a delicate balance since time IS money, and we all want more of both.
@@azjohn520 hey buddy, hope all is well. You’re 100% correct. It becomes a choice, how much time are you willing to spend on each given task versus how you want the end product to come out. Somewhere in the middle is where I’d say we end up most times around here just because I try and float the balance of getting things done and not having a complete mess on my hands but hey. I’m doing the best I can. Thanks for checking in John, happy thanksgiving.
I was hoping this video was going to be you working on my car.
That can be arranged, no guarantee that it’s something you would like though.
@ I forgot I owned it until I saw this video so do your worst.
I love that 72 nova “hitman”. And the k5 blazer is awesome too. Great video.
Yeah that car has been with me forever. It’s like a child to me. Thanks for watching.
It’s refreshing to see I’m not the only one who realizes every project/task needs more time than there are waking hours.
Chuck that’s the understatement of the year. You’re 1000% right. Arnold swarzenegger once said “sleep faster” which I’ve come to learn is the only way to get a project done. Best bet is to chip away at it consistently. Thanks for watching.
U need a better fuel filter lol
You ain’t kidding. I’m wondering if It was some rubber debris from when some of the soft lines were cut. However I use the big shears to cut my hoses so it’s probably not that.
Most muffler shops will refuse to run straight pipes out the back of an suv or hatch back because it is a safety hazard if you have dry rotted seals it can suck fumes into the cab this is why almost every suv u see has pipes dumped out the side or the two back corners at an angle
Those muffler shops are onto something lol. They’re definitely right. I’m glad I finally put the turn downs on. Once I get the computer back from Holley I’ll take it for a ride and confirm it doesn’t still fill with fumes. Thanks for watching.
@ I’d definitely eventually run it out the side either in front or rear of the tire I’m sure there are holes in the floor for fumes to leak through
@ yeah I think I’m going to add to the turn downs and have it all the way out the side eventually.
Good job Steve
Thanks Steve. Gotta get all the little nagging things done. Thanks for watching.
Actually I’ve been wondering this. It’s nice to see you finish up the little projects. Keep it up.
Yeah there’s a lot of stuff you just need to bang out because it’s not great for a regular video and it may take a long time. Thanks for watching
Good info brother mine 2 barrel carb on 302 1970 mustang thanks for the info
Thank you for watching.
I have a 302 v8 with a Holley street warrior. When starting, the car idles roughly at ~600rpm and then after a couple minutes runs smoothly at about 700-800rpm. Any recommendations on what to adjust?
I would say the choke adjustment is the culprit take a look at that. May be too far closed to start. Also the fast idle speed needs to be higher that 600 when warming up as well. If you adjust those two I bet it runs like a top. Keep at it, you will get it squared away I’m sure of is
@americannostalgiagarage my first old car, and my first carbureted engine. I am trying my best but don't have the knowledge of people teaching me when I was young. Thanks for the input!
@ everyone starts somewhere, don’t get discouraged. Stick with it, you will get it figured out and youll learn something along the way.
If you didn't come home with that footprint gas pedal for the install on your next video then Im unsubscribing. Joe dirt would be so disappointed
I buy them in bulk. Hahaha
Some wild builds in there. I can’t imagine the budget required to build most of those cars. Probably still fun to go and walk around.
The budgets were insane on most of them. Some were in the hundreds of thousands. Even though they’re built with practically unlimited budgets I appreciate the kind of craftsmanship that can be seen when you’re not floating a budget. Very cool.
I definitely could’ve maybe afforded one of those vehicles. The Honda at 29:00…. Shows like SEMA both inspire me and make me want to sell all my tools and toys and just play video games. And I suck at playing video games. 😂

I’m currently installing this same set up on my 67, my question is how was the ride height after all back together, coil spring just seems a bit tall, and was there spacer washers on your ball joints, and did you use them?
So I bought the drop spindle option and yes I used the ball joint spacers. I think if you didn’t then you make have issues with being able to get a ball joint stud tightened properly on the spindle. My ride height is perfect. I’m really happy with it. But I also have 18 inch wheels on the front.
@@americannostalgiagarage ok good to know, I chose the drop spindles as well
@ great. It will probably be right where you want it then. The drop spindles give it a nice aggressive stance.
@ what did you do about the shock body hitting the control arm. Having the same issue and unable to get the bottom bolt to align. Also did you have an issue with the supplied tie rods not fitting into the spindle?
@ are you trying to install the shock without the engine and trans in? Once there’s some weight in the frame the shock goes in easier, but you can also wrap a chain around the frame and your floor jack and then jack the lower control arm up a bit. And for the tie rods I didn’t have any issues. Is it possible that you’re trying to install the tie rod upside down? Meaning you’re going the wrong way with the taper of the stud?
I hate to say it, but you need to drop back and punt that 💩Camaro. Part it out (trim, interior, wheels, misc.) and sell or scrap whatever is left. It will be nothing but aggravation if you try to resurrect it. 🤷♂️
I totally agree with you about the aggravation. But I really want to save it and it will be a learning experience for me as well. Stay tuned to watch me struggle. Thanks for watching.
