Going above and beyond looks great on the surface, but harsh reality besides what was mentioned in this video is that if you go above and beyond on a regular basis then it’ll no longer be “above and beyond”. It’ll just be what’s expected of you and in a lot if cases what’s expected of your department, so in that case not only did you screw yourself by gaining a heavier standard work load, but you also screwed your coworkers with the same thing. I really is best to just do what you gotta do, so you can just collect a paycheck, go home and be happy.

Bro, I've tried the job thing and I've gotten out of the rat race as well. I lasted a little over 4 years without a job and it was the VERY BEST THING I've EVER DONE on this planet. But I returned due to dental issues. I needed a dentist, and badly. I was ready to fly to the Philippines at that point since it's cheaper to fly there, get major dental work, and fly back than it is to get dental work in the USA, but I decided it was simpler just to become a wage slave again. Now, I'm fighting to get out for good. I cant live like this. It gave me health problems, mentally and physically. But I'm about 8 months away from being free once more.

A few I’ve used. I’m not on a low income per se, being north of 6 figures, but, I do choose to live relatively frugally. Some big savers I can push to others are: Status brands, don’t fall for them. Shop at a mid brand outlet and wait til it’s on special. Nobody truly cares if you’re wearing the latest LV Bag that cost $15,000 and if they do, they shouldn’t be your friends. Fine dining is a scam, look for Value for your money when you eat out. Bring bottled water with you everywhere, especially restaurants. You’ll be surprised how much it saves you from buying a drink or a second drink. Your car. This is a big one and it’s a bit of a pain for most, but go modest. If you earn 70k, you should be buying in the $25-$30,000 region at the MAX if you’re financing. Realistically it should be $20-25k. You aren’t earning enough to buy a 50k BMW. Just because you can “afford” to take out that loan, doesn’t mean you should. Need to ask whether a $400 a month car with 90% of the same features is worth dropping for a $1,000 a month loan for something with heated seats. A $20,000 Mitsubishi Outlander SUV will get you just as far as a $50,000 BMW X3 SUV. Hell, it’ll probably get you further and it’ll do it far cheaper. Rent/Mortgage. Look for the best house in an Okay neighbourhood, not the worst house in the best neighbourhood. And for those capable, housemates, but make sure you vet them first and get to know them if they’re going to be strangers. I know this one comes across as a bit of a no brainer, but shop smart. Discounts, Coupons and sales are your best friend. Also, a hot tip, you can make soup stock from rotisserie chicken bones. Do it. Turn that $6.99 chicken into 3 or 4 meals instead of 2. Which brings me into the last point. COOK at home. Big grocery bills seem daunting but they don’t need to be. I spend $75 a week on groceries and I could cut that in half if I really wanted to. People often say “my 9-5 isn’t enough”, when 90% of the time, they are living beyond their means or aren’t willing to sacrifice convenience and comfort for some financial freedom. Go to the gym? That’s $20 a week at most places. You can buy a set of weights for your home off of Facebook marketplace for pennies on the dollar. Treadmill? Go outside and walk/run my dude. It’s free.

I think another con of a 9 to 5 is how limiting it is, not just money wise but work wise. Every week its the same work, money, and results. This schedule of only maintaining without really gaining just seems so repetitive, boring, and mundane. In a business or skill on the other hand, you can push yourself to get to the next level because the time and energy you put into it will be more specific to what you want to focus on.

I’ve been thinking about moving there for a while. My job sector supposedly pays well. What are apartments looking like? I heard it’s pricing people out because not enough inventory? Is it true there are studios that’s only cost a month plus application fee to get into?
