Psychology of Word Placement (blur words, writing great sentences, using white space)
Tips for writers
- Blur words vs. strong words
What do you want people to focus on and what do you want them to skim over subconsciously (like “she said”)
Too many blur words makes the writing boring
- There’s a tendency to look at the beginning and end of words, sentences, paragraphs, and chapters.
Use strong words that stand out to end a chapter, rather than blur words
The final word of the book should be strong
If a sentence is feeling weak, see if you use enough strong words. Blur words or generalizations can make sentences weak.
- Repeating strong words too often can make them distracting. Repeating them intentionally can emphasize the MC’s obsession with the idea.
- Don’t just use the ...

    Good points - clear, concise and very helpful. Thank you. I particularly appreciated point #3. When writing dialogue, I always try to consider who the characters are and how they would actually react in each situation. My first beta reader told me yesterday the dialogue was her favorite part of my book as it didn't waste time on unimportant details; it simply helped move the plot forward. She could "feel" the characters' emotions and several times even found herself wanting to shake one or the other because they weren't "getting it." Best feedback I could have ever asked for!

    When I was younger, I always wrote in purplish prose, sometimes in graphic details. Now picking up writing as a hobby 35 years later, it really is challenging trying to adhere to “modern standards”. I’ve decided that try to incorporate more succinct forms when necessary but narrate in my more natural purplish and lavender voice.

    I reckon there is potential for you to find readers in a range of professions and interview them all about the 10 most irritating errors they see about their profession in books, as an aid for writers. Police, nurses, doctors, university professors, IT tech support, computer programmers, paramedics, school teachers, truck drivers, pharmacists, lawyers etc. Could be a good way to help build up your audience and viewing hours with something that I haven't immediately seen elsewhere as a coherent series (but check first, just in case!)

    • @PaulGardnerStephen
      @PaulGardnerStephen 27 дней назад

      @@carlystevensbooks Maybe make a playlist containing only those? Also, I think they are mainly in longer interviews, which is fine when you have the time for a longer listen, but I suspect that just the curated key points in <= 15 minutes on each topic would be more easily findable and watchable. You might be able to edit up some of that content to make the first few of these. That said, I'll take a closer look :)

    As I writer I feel I know what I want my voice to be, but sometimes I lack the vacabulary I'd like to use and use a blank space so I can research later in order not to be stuck think😢 about words. Can you make a video on this? Struggling with word choice and limited vocabulary

    • @carlystevensbooks
      @carlystevensbooks Месяц назад

      Sounds like you have a good strategy by leaving those spaces. Vocabulary is something you can build over time, which is potentially frustrating now, but pays off. I still look up words when I’m watching TV if I’ve never heard of them. I’ve read a lot of classic books that use bigger vocabularies than most modern novels. You can do it! And thanks for the topic recommendation 😊

    I enjoyed hearing your thoughts on narrative voice. I sometimes find it amusing to look at my WIP and compare it to the way I write in my journal. They're so different! I tend to write my stories in first person--or, at least, my current WIP and the one I'm going to be starting next are--so, I do have to consider my character's voice, too, when I'm writing. The MC in my current is naive, has a big imagination, loves legends and has a fear of the dark, plus she lives in Germany in the 1860s, so those things are all things I have to consider with her voice. For my next project, my MC is highly sensitive, so he notices lots of small details and feelings--whether his or others'--are always very big for him, he's an avid reader, and he's a fashion model in the 1980s. So his voice will be pretty different, I think. I am naturally very descriptive, so my POV characters tend to be very descriptive as well, in some form or another.

      If it’s your natural strength then lean into it. Everyone is different. If that’s the style you are most attracted to and admire and enjoy, then go for it. But don’t pursue it if it’s out of any sense of pretentiousness. If you don’t enjoy writing it, readers won’t enjoy reading it.

    #3: aaah, yess! I've had to learn to restrain myself from being like, "well, you see, X did that because of their deep-seated trust issues, etc. etc...". I've definitely found that that kind of overt character psychoanalysis is more for the reader than the writer. I think I recognized early on that that was my favorite part of consuming fiction, but then I had to realize that as the writer I'M not the one who's supposed to be doing the consuming. A chef doesn't make a cake for someone and eat it for them, right?

    How do you write sensations without repeating the same words, like rush, adrenaline, tingling, etc? I'm also trying to avoid using telling words that state emotions, what can I do? Also, I have a relatively long romance novel I'm working on; how do you keep each love scene fresh? Thanks for your video.

    • @carlystevensbooks
      @carlystevensbooks 2 месяца назад

      That’s a great question! I have a couple thoughts. The Emotion Thesaurus is useful when you feel like you’re running out of physical ways to describe emotion. Also, consider both what you’d like to see in the love scene as well as what it means for the characters and their relationship. Are they admitting they love each other through this interaction? Are they feeling vulnerable because they’re trying something new? Is their chemistry off the charts? Is it stalling for some reason? There are lots of ways to make each scene meaningful to the characters and story. And of course, if you’re stuck, read some romance to get new ideas!

    The most important thing I learned for McCarthy is: Everyone who say something have to have some kind of motivation, even if that character says only a single line in the entire novel. It doesn't have to be world changing though, it can be as simple as "I'm hungry". Regardless, first you need to figure out what they want, and then comes their personality, because that's what decide how they communicate their want.

    Thank you so much for defending purple prose! This video is a revelation! I get so annoyed when readers and critique group members simply shame or dismiss writing as "too purple" without considering its broader purpose and aesthetic effect. As you said, when executed well, it can enhance and accentuate the meaning of a work. Dorian Gray would not be one of the most beloved classics without its beautiful, poetic prose.
