I enjoyed hearing your thoughts on narrative voice. I sometimes find it amusing to look at my WIP and compare it to the way I write in my journal. They're so different! I tend to write my stories in first person--or, at least, my current WIP and the one I'm going to be starting next are--so, I do have to consider my character's voice, too, when I'm writing. The MC in my current is naive, has a big imagination, loves legends and has a fear of the dark, plus she lives in Germany in the 1860s, so those things are all things I have to consider with her voice. For my next project, my MC is highly sensitive, so he notices lots of small details and feelings--whether his or others'--are always very big for him, he's an avid reader, and he's a fashion model in the 1980s. So his voice will be pretty different, I think. I am naturally very descriptive, so my POV characters tend to be very descriptive as well, in some form or another.
Good Morning (Evening, Afternoon, or Night). I'm wondering what your thought are on stream-of-consciousness writing? Also, great video, these tips are pretty helpful.
Glad you enjoyed the video! I’m impressed by stream of consciousness in small doses. In novel form, like something by Virginia Woolf or James Joyce, I think pure SoC is a bit much 😬
If it’s your natural strength then lean into it. Everyone is different. If that’s the style you are most attracted to and admire and enjoy, then go for it. But don’t pursue it if it’s out of any sense of pretentiousness. If you don’t enjoy writing it, readers won’t enjoy reading it.
As I writer I feel I know what I want my voice to be, but sometimes I lack the vacabulary I'd like to use and use a blank space so I can research later in order not to be stuck think😢 about words. Can you make a video on this? Struggling with word choice and limited vocabulary
Sounds like you have a good strategy by leaving those spaces. Vocabulary is something you can build over time, which is potentially frustrating now, but pays off. I still look up words when I’m watching TV if I’ve never heard of them. I’ve read a lot of classic books that use bigger vocabularies than most modern novels. You can do it! And thanks for the topic recommendation 😊
And if a writer's voice does not comply with the accepted 'rules' and advice from You tube 'experts?' Should they give up? What gems could we readers be missing from a potential 'Unicorn.' I wonder......

Those characters sound interesting!
