    I was fascinated when I saw this. I had a serious crush on Mariette Hartley and I was amazed by that Subshuttle. Elon Musk was certainly late to the table with "his" hyper-loop concept. I was really looking forward to a whole new series, but Planet Earth wasn't it. Thanks for the extra detail about Ted Cassidy's work. I didn't realize he was behind a lot of that.

      Yeah, I was the same way. As I touched on in the video, I'm a big classic movie trailer guy. I think I own something like 25 to 30 trailer compilations on DVD and bluray. So I'd been hearing Cassidy's voice work for years upon years and just had no idea it was him. Thanks, Loren.

    I have this film on DVD... have a huge soft spot for it. It's weird of course... so stagey and flat, with the stage-like sets... it's like watching a filmed stage play. But then there's the lurid colors, the actually very cool cinematography, the score... and it becomes more like watching a dream. Made even more tangible when watching it late at night around Halloween. It has an "Invaders from Mars" feel to it. The same kind of dream-like quality.

    • @AtomicSnackBar
      @AtomicSnackBar 18 часов назад

      I've never thought of the dream-like quality, that's interesting. And there is some debate about the film, but I do feel the sort of flat, stoic nature of it all was fully intentional. Meant to show that society had become stagnant. Thanks, Randall.

    Blast from the past! I remember Genesis II. Roddenberry had a lot of interesting ideas, but post-Star Trek, none of them seemed to gain traction. I did not know about Ted Cassidy's voice-over work. My most favorite Ted Cassidy performance was from ST:TOS "What Are Little Girls Made Of?" as Ruk, the surviving android from the time of the "Old Ones". His soliloquy in that episode was just chilling.

    • @AtomicSnackBar
      @AtomicSnackBar 2 дня назад

      That's one thing about doing the channel. Often, the stuff I cover is so obscure, there isn't much to highlight in these actor's resumes. 1.). I have the vaguest of recollections of this movie-I think I caught it waaay back in the pre-Oprah period, when it was possible to see a 4 o’clock movie just after school! (Caught a lot of the early Godzilla films that way!) Weird as it sounds, it’s the dual-navel I remember… Maybe weirder, there may be a _Genesis II_ Easter egg in a season 3 _Picard_ episode, during which some of our heroes are skulking about a Federation black site, and pass a “Genesis II” torpedo, making it a double Easter egg also referencing the _Star Trek II_ macguffin! 2.) Watching Jimmy Doohan sell Toyotas makes me wish that more modern adverts were more like Doohan’s quiet earnest pitch and less like music videos… 2.). Caught that photo of a young Ted Cassidy in a suit as he’s talking, and an odd thought hit me: Cassidy might have made a very good cinematic Doc Savage!

      That double naval reveal scene is really strange and memorable. In all my years, I can't think of another quite like it. Neat about the Picard easter egg possibility. I watched that one even, but missed it. Modern commercials of all kinds could take some clues from the past, especially movie trailers. The trailers of today just don't hold a candle to those of yesteryear. And you know, you're right. Cassidy as Savage would have been awesome. The way he looked on Lost in Space was pretty close already.

      @ chrisbridges4885 - The movie starring TV Tarzan Ron Ely was produced by the Great George Pal. It was made after the Batman 66' series and Pal, being a 1940s Family friendly guy, did it in a campy way. Tongue in cheek. I've been meaning to read the books, as Doc Savage is credited as being the prototype for all the superheroics that followed, including Superman. Nobody talks about Buckeroo Banzai ( which I loved), but that character and his companions were a total homage to Doc Savage. I've had 'history of' book on my Amazon Wishlist about the Pulp era of his creation forever. I may just have to pull the trigger on that one after this conversation.

    Genesis 2. I remember not being able to watch it because it came on during a school night (the television tin my parent’s room). I remember Planet Earth. John Saxon and John Quaid(as the leader of a tribe of raiders, similar to his role as the leader of The Black Widows motorcycle gang in Any Which Way But Loose and Any Which Way You Can). A future in which a part of the world is ruled by women and other parts by raiders. I bought the soundtrack to Harry Sukman’s score of Salem’s Lot. Great and scary soundtrack. I think it’s still available on CD and vinyl. Ted Cassidy was in the classic Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid. He had a classic line,”Guns or knives.” He was also in an episode of I Dream Of Jeanie as a genie who is royally pissed at Jeanie’s sister(the brunette who causes trouble when she comes to visit Jeanie). He is the genie of Major Healy who asks what he will do with Jeanie’s sister. He says with murderous glee, “I’ll kill her.”(But then, again, I may have Ted’s role confused with Michael Ansara, who also has a commanding voice and is the husband of Barbara Eden at that time). Ted Cassidy said in an interview about the character of Lurch in The Addams Family. He explained that Lurch, despite his appearance, was brimming with humanity. Lurch can drive a car and is hospitable to visitors. There was another made for television sci-fi film called The Questor Tapes, I think Mike Farrell(BJ Hunnicutt in M.A.S.H.)was in it and it contained the Kolchak, The Night Stalker theme song by Gil Melle’. Yes. Star Trek did show women’s bellybuttons on some episodes. But, hey. This is the future. This is space. And not every intelligent race that the crew of the Enterprise encountered is worried about censorship like I Dream Of Jeanie. Toyota. They were called Economy Cars back in the day. A Toyota Corona(a neighbor drove on in the 80’s. It ran very well back then)was probably priced at 7 thousand dollars. It would be nice if today’s new cars were priced at 7 thousand than what they are priced now.

I've heard about The Questor Tapes, but haven't seen it yet. Fortunately, it's on DVD and Bluray. Just remember, though, in space, no one can hear you belly button. And you certainly aren't kidding about cars. They have skyrocketed. I got mine in 2004. It was used, but about 12K if I remember right. I'm not sure you could get a golf cart for that much now.

      @@AtomicSnackBar A vehicle of your own is like Arnie Cunningham’s early relationship with Christine(in the Stephen King novel and the movie). It is your own personal space. You depend on this car. You can blast your stereo while going to and from the job. You can fall asleep without any distractions or worries. The issue I probably have with new cars is the stereo system. These days it’s about “infotainment”, everything online or extracted from a smartphone. I love having my CDs on the stereo and a great oldies radio station on the radio. But, one thing that can’t be ignored is the room in older cars. You can stretch out in some medium to larger sized vehicles. There was a Chevy Blazer Tahoe that I was interested in years ago that was on sale for $7,500.00 and it was located in Texas. Maybe I would buy it if I had the money. After I graduated from high school, I remembered seeing a ‘62 four door Lincoln Continental(suicide doors and all)for sale for $2,500.00. All it needed at the time was some engine work and a paint job. The problem is fuel. My only solution is to get a higher grade of fuel to get carry on over the miles. But it probably wouldn’t work in all vehicles. But I may be wrong because I am not a mechanic.
