The creature was a product of the romantic union of Foghorn Leghorn and Charlie Tuna, during their rendezvous at Animacon 65. Their offspring went on to star in such movies as THE GHOST AND MR. CHICKEN CARP, SALMON CHANTED EVENING, A FISH CALLED CHICKEN, COOL HEN FLUKE, HEN HUR, FIN AND HEN'S WAKE and others.
Yup. That's getting pinned. And thus far, you are winning the comments section this weekend.
But can you imagine the sweet talk during that date? I say, I say, that would be something else.
Lol, i yield in deference to superior aqua-poultry puns 😆
@@Gappasaurus I found "Hen Hur" particularly amusing.
@@AtomicSnackBar “Salmon Chanted Evening” got me good 🤣
@ Gappasaurus - I thought of you immediately when I read this post. Da Man's on fire this week. I'm not even gonna try. He's earned the Laurel leaf this go round. Kudos to you Good sir.
They used to show this on Creature Features in the 1970s. It's one of my favorite underwater monster movies along with the 1973 TV movie The Neptune Factor which was shot mostly in an aquarium filled with reef fish that were supposed to be mutations grown to gigantic proportions after an underwater earthquake. I had always thought Destination Inner Space was a made for TV movie due to cheap production values (a good thing) and pacing but was double billed with a British German actioneer. I always learn new things on your site. The film has a wonderful homey lived in look with the wood panel walls of the underwater lab especially for someone who grew up in the 70s in South Florida. For me this monster movie is more comforting than a gallon of mint chocolate chip ice creme or a large NewYork pizza with garlic knots. It's certainly a nostalgic treat.
I haven't seen "The Neptune Factor" but what you say makes a lot of sense considering the movie poster. Which, I really dig. I'll have to keep an eye out for that one.
That's neat you got to grow up in South Florida in the 70s. I have very fond memories of 1980s Panama City, FL. Went nearly every summer of my youth.
@ darkstarZ74 - New York style pizza, garlic knots, mint chocolate chip ice cream and an evening of underwater movie monster fun? If a woman doesn't appreciate a man of such refined tastes, show her the door. Seriously, that sounds like a pretty darn good night. Or maybe guys just don't take as much to please. I was born in Hollywood Florida and grew up there in the 60s and 70s. I left in 1988 and returned to W.Palm in 1991. It's changed enormously. Not surprised to find another S.Florida native here, though. The SnackBar attracts only the most discerning of individuals.
Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea might just be my most favorite show ever, and I'm vaguely disappointed to this day that this sea monster never ended up on that show somehow. I love "siege" creature features: Creature from the Black Lagoon, The Thing from Another World, It! The Terror from Beyond Space, and this movie here. I think it doesn't get the attention that a good, influential, classic B-movie deserves.
I've made this joke before, heck, I've made it in the comments section already, but I'm going to make it again. This film really swims under the radar for some reason. Not only is it just an enjoyable movie with a great cast, but it has a really spiffy looking monster as well. Almost looks like something John Carl Buechler would have designed.
That is a top notch Gill Man, real quality.
A top notch Gillman with some top notch Gillman acting as well. Quite impressive in the swimming scenes.
Great review. I remember as a child this movie occasionally appearing in the 4:30 Early Show in Los Angeles.
It would definitely make for a good film to show on a creature feature or late night style program. When you say 4:30, is that a.m. or p.m.?
That would be PM. I would watch it after coming home from school.
@@jameskerr8091 Yeah, that makes a bit more sense. And that's neat. My cable never had anything like that during the week.
This was way before cable. We had tv antennas. Lol
@@jameskerr8091 So then that really was some must see TV of the time.
The detail of the creature is amazing.
Not to mention, how well he swims. Very impressive for such a bulky costume.
Indeed it was.
Great vid Rob. Thanks for the heads up on the bluray .
My pleasure. And I forgot to mention in the video, but it's being released by Kino. So you know it's going to be good.
Thanks, Ray.
@ AtomicSnackBar - the Amazon listing shows all 3 as being 2K scans of 'original film elements' or other impressive words. Lots of Commentaries from various snooty-tooties if you're one to watch those.
never cease to amaze me Daddio!! I saw this at a midnight Drive-in & all I could think of was how the creature looked like a mutated Pine cone
You know what they say about pine cones, though, right? Nature's most vicious and deadly cone.
Thanks again, always look forward to these.
Always a pleasure. Thanks, Jerry.
Aw man, love that Gillman suit. I'd wear the hell out of that for Halloween....or perhaps job interviews. I'm sure it would leave a lasting impression. 😁 This one looks like a ton of fun, and as always...I enjoyed all the trivia. Hope your weekend is going well Rob! 🤜🤛 Stay Atomic!
I don't know about Halloween or job interviews, but I like to imagine it's what you wear when you are narrating your videos. But with a fancy bowtie. You are a sophisticated gentleman, after all.
Thanks, good sir. I always appreciate seeing you here.
A great pick for a retrospective of a underappreciated movie Sterling. Thank you for letting me know about the new collection coming out also.😊
Thank you much, good lady Tochi.
Always liked this picture. Had a pretty neat, weird, electronic score too as I remember. Thanks for covering this one!
My pleasure, Steve. And nice to hear from you again.
This is why I love this channel. I have never seen this movie nor some of of the others you mentioned. But, boy, would I dig it if I was told it was going to be broadcast!
I mean why do we keep watching those old sci-fi/fantasy and horror classics when we've got cgi and all those sexy new actors and actresses with their modern sensibilities? This is the reason why: there's no filter. No one greenlit this movies cuz it tested well with modern audiences. There's a ridiculous amount of freedom here that "Hollywood" has lost.
Perhaps some of the best movies were made by the dumbest writers and directors who had the most accomplished and skilled crew.
Let's face it, there's a lot of "literary" nonsense to be explored. But with the right crew and cast you've potentially got a ..."Blob" in the forecast.
❤❤❤ out 3 hearts!
P.S. "Cult of the Cobra" had that look. That look that the backgrounds of the original "King Kong" had. Images that stay in your head because they capture the emotion of the imagination.
Oh yeah, from just the monster alone, I would have been very excited to see this one on TV as a lad. Heck, I still would be, especially with how partial I am to 60s film and TV.
And you make another great point. Hollywood has lost so much freedom is so many ways, yet have gained freedom in ways they don't need to have it. Even up to the 90s, a filmmaker had to really work to get a movie made. Now, any jackalope with a fancy phone can go outside and make a "movie."
I first saw "Cult of the Cobra" on TV ... I want to say on Svengoolie. I was quite impressed with it.
My typical response to seeing a movie review like this is to look for a place to watch it online as much as I like to own dvds.
@williamestes629 - Best of all... it's right here on RUclips! Okay ladies, can I get out of Comments Prison now?
Like Tony said, it is right here on YT. There's a couple of different uploads. One is really decent quality. The others a little rough.
@ AtomicSnackBar - "Take the Best and leave the rest."
Oh man, You just brought me back, waaayyy back, with those Diner(?) Space Creatures. My brother and I had several of those, being huge monster fans from early on. Loved those things, hadn’t thought of them since … well the early 1980s I am sure. Very cool.
I was a big fan myself, had the entire run. Still have most of them. The video footage I showed was from an earlier episode here on the channel.
Did you have the eraser versions or the rubber versions?
This movie has a lot of famous people in it. James Hong was in everything. I saw him a while back in a video -- he's in his 90s and still mentally and physically in good shape. I've got a collection of Diener Erasers that I've had since I was a kid. I think I've got that gillman, but I'm not sure.
Oh interesting. So you have the eraser versions? I have the normal rubber ones. Do you remember where you got yours from? Some came in packs and others were fast food prizes.
@@AtomicSnackBar Yeah, mine came from school. They were a dime each, I think. I bought a lot of them and played with them with the little green army men and cavemen and cavalry men and Indians, etc.
@@destructarr That's odd/interesting that you got them from school. Was it a bookfair type deal?
@@AtomicSnackBar It seems like they had books for sale in the library and those erasers were there too.
Once again, you've managed to find a film I'd previously thought only I had heard of! Well played, my Man! Always thought this Flic had influenced several later 'Moster Movies... Such as 'Alien' & 'Intruder Within'!
I wonder too if the film influenced the films of the undersea sci-fi boom of 89 and 90. Man, that was a good time for underwater sci-fi.
Always a pleasure, Pondo.
I really dig that sea creature. What a great design. And speaking of design I actually really dig the set design as well even though it was actually a toy on the exterior. It seems like you were hitting on all cylinders in this one. I love that you were able to include toy figures within the video. That’s a very nice touch. Any this was highly enjoyable good buddy. Keep it snacky!!!
Yes, siree. If I can find a way to wiggle toys into one of these videos, darn it, I'm gonna do it And with Diener having made so many classic sci-fi creatures in that line, this isn't the last time I'll be bringing it up. Oh no. You haven't heard the last of Diener Space Creatures.
I remember having a few of those figures and i didnt know they came from this series.
That's neat. Do you recall which ones you had?
Excellent review
Thanks, Gregg. I appreciate it.
This was a fun one nice pick
Thank you much, Mr. D.
great looking underwater monster, i need to check this out one that slipped through the net for me, love that sealab plastic model cool as man, cheers sterling
Slipped through the net. I see what you did there. Good stuff, Stephen.
I saw that double-feature first-run when I was 11 at the Colonial Theater in Poughkeepsie, NY. The Colonial always had the cool double-features.
That is awesome. I'm not sure I ever actually caught a double feature as a lad. Not sure if they had fallen out of favor by the 80s or my hometown just didn't have many.
Howdy,
Goddamn that is one slick suit. Gonna have to check this one out, thanks for publishing the review!!
He is a slick one indeed. If I ever do a Top Water Based Monsters episode, other than needing a snappier title, I would probably have to double dip and mention this fellow again.
Thanks as always for bringin' the howdy.
@@AtomicSnackBar Say, that's a great idea. This monster, The Monster of Piedras Blancas (a personal fav), The Phantom from 10,000 Leagues, Monster from the Ocean Floor, and, of course, the monsters from The Horror of Party Beach. The Vincent Price film War Gods of the Deep had a couple of nice fish-men suits as well, one of them being re-used later in a cheap crap-fest called Space Probe Taurus, A.K.A. Space Monster.
@@AtomicSnackBar Oh, and another fav, Attack of the Crab Monsters. Oh, hell, Attack of the Giant Leeches, Creature from the Haunted Sea, this could go on and on.....
@@varanid9 I like The Monster of Piedras Blancas as well. If I hadn't covered him in depth in another episode, he certainly would have made the protentional list.
Some great suggestions here. Glad you mentioned Horror of Party Beach. That's a great monster design. I came very close to buying the 6th scale figure not long ago.
@@varanid9 I really do need to cover Attack of the Crab Monsters. I've been wanting to for some time now.
Omg now that a cool shirt. Love the lighting. Very cool monster his face looks like the Chet turd monster from wierd science
I have never thought of that. But you're right, they do kind of favor each other. As I kid I didn't really understand what Chet was supposed to be. I just thought he was a neat looking monster.
Its the eyes that do it. Haha the fly chet ate was the give away in weird science
I saw this a few months ago. Great fun!!
Ah, most excellent. Glad to hear you dug it.

@@dumoulin11 Even more glad to hear that. Thank you kindly.
Nice video, man! Looks fun, this movie. Thanks!
I sure had a good time with it. And with the Kino bluray out now, it's the perfect time to check it out.
Thanks, Charles.
Sounds like a nice little movie. Love how they reuse that title in a future movie
It's a good time, especially if you dig Gillman-esc creatures. Thanks, David.
This is one of those sci Fi chillers we saw at a Saturday Matinee they played at an old theater down the street.
That's excellent. I would have absolutely loved this one as a lad, especially on the big screen. I was always a sucker for anything Creature from the Black Lagoon-esc.
I was thinking about this one the other day. Particularly, how it never gets talked about, so thanks for covering this one. It’s one of those water-based creatures that I can’t resist!
Yeah, it belongs up there with It! The Terror from Beyond Space.
That's odd. It was thinking about you the other day as well. But you know what the say about water-based creatures, they dig some land based Bryns.
@ AtomicSnackbar - you mean as an appetizer ?
@@tonysantiago255 I don't want to put words in their mouths. Or Bryns, for that matter.
(4) DAMN ... I'm going to get a copy of "Sci-Fi Chillers". Sod the hubby if he throws a shit fit about it. 😉
Yeah. Stick it to the man. That'll teach 'em.
I am lucky. Wifey will let me buy it.
The poor Gill-Creature doesn't really look like that in his own environment; he's been decompressed! Use your head; That's why he's on a rampage.
Under his native/natural conditions at depth, he's only about six-inches tall and behaves respectfully (if a tad officiously), but being pulled violently from 10,000 feet below had caused him terrible problems. Oh, and he's in constant pain.
And Dude... that Sea-Lab is AWESOME.
I remember my dad laughing at miniature submarine shots from 60s TV shows; all the reflections/refractions bouncing off the walls of the pool right behind the model. But this.. this yellow masterpiece... windows for scale... it even has a cable coming out the top of it, just like it really would in real life! Five year old me believes it. Or at least he's trying... ;)
WENDE WAGNER! Wow. What a beauty.
Great find; I had no idea this existed.
He really was a misunderstood Gill-Alien. Not to mention the humans did steal him. Just walked into the alien ship and started taking stuff. Kinda rude.
I really dig the Sealab as well. Very Irwin Allen in design. I could easily imagine it popping up on Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. They did run across a werewolf, after all.
And Wende Wagner. Talk about an underrated beauty. She should have done way more.
It's a really fun little movie. Right here on YT as well.
When will mankind finally learn to leave the gelatinous egg-chrisilae-thingies that they come across in derelict alien ships found crashed at the bottom of the sea... ALONE?
"I head a noise." Sure. Sure you did.
And probably a scream, too. Through all that water, from an alien ship? You just had to go over there and have a look. Now look at us.
Admit it; you just don't like squatters.
@@DavidDouglas-q7v Wise words, Mr. Douglas. Wise words indeed.
Ok you had me with Gill Man. James Hong is the man. Great video Slim. I had most of those eraser creatures.
I think you'd like it. So as your attorney, I suggest you buy the Kino triple feature next week.
@@AtomicSnackBarLol
An ACTUAL Sealab 2021 connection. The creature is quite delightful. What a great review, and this show is most definitely NOT devoid of intelligent life. 😊
Sometimes things just work out in a wonderfully Sealab-esc way. As to the intelligent life and the show, you are correct. It's just all in the comments section.
I don't recall ever seeing this, will have to check it out. The monster looks awesome!
Yeah, it really seems to swim under the radar for some reason. But such a cool looking monster and Wende Wagner. That's all you need right there.
Thanks, Ron.
Lordy, where do I even begin? Such great stuff - that looks like a really good film, definitely on my watch list. What fantastic presenting, so good - interesting, funny - just great. The format, just nailed down - just great. What a brilliant little show this was - wow - just brilliant. thatnk you.
Funnily enough I watched 'Underwater' this week - modern film but I watched because I read it had a Lovecraft vibe - it didn't, but the ending sort of maybe had a link I could see - not anything that you wouldn't say, Alien, Cloverfield, Aliens - even a bit of Gravity (Sandra Bullock) - but - but- but - it was sort of ok, actually, as a modern monster film, it was sort of worth watching - sort of.
I really liked this weeks show - one that I will watch a few times - thank you. Wish I could give your shows more than one thumbs up.
Most excellent to hear you say that. And I'm glad you noticed. Many of the episodes since the re-branding have been fixed up re-runs or ones I filmed before the change to Atomic Snack Bar. It was one of the first actual Glow in the Dark Cinema episodes with the adjusted format. So very cool that you, a long time regular, noticed and liked.
Not a modern film, per se. Ok, not modern at all. But I re-watched C.H.U.D.II in the Great DVD Re-watch. Tons of fun.
@@AtomicSnackBar I watched C.H.U.D. not that long ago and was pleasantly surprised at how good it was - saw it when it came out, and thought it was fun - it is. It amazes me how much effort was put into straight to video films back then. I think it still is on some S&S films but not really horror or sc-fi.
did you have this in the US? ruclips.net/video/_ycG-xe1uSM/видео.html
This looks like a fun movie, I’ll have to check it out. This also makes me want to rewatch Sealab 2021. I loved the show when it first aired on Adult Swim .
It is and you should, good sir. Sealab could probably use another watch as well. I did a full re-watch about 5 or so years ago and it really held up well. My kind of humor right there.
Thanks, Bandito.
Fun little flick. Also stars Gary Merrill. One of my book sources list Ron Burke as the creature. Apparently he is still with us. All the titles you listed in the background of this video are also fun films. I will have to get the bluray release. The box shows KL so it appears to be from Kino-Lober who do an excellent job with their bluray releases.
That is correct, good sir. I normally highlight the suit actor in creature specific episodes, but very often forget in full movie retrospectives. But, it'll give me something to talk about if, or more likely when, I discuss the creature again. Burke had a pretty interesting resume. Star Trek, Batman '66, The Green Hornet.
And that's something else I forgot to mention. Man, I dropped the mysterious undersea space cylinder ball on this one. But it's definitely Kino. And they are one of my favorite, top 3 even, blu-ray releasing companies.
@@AtomicSnackBar I have many of their blurays, many genres. Always well done. Kino, Criterion, Arrow are all top notch.
@@garfieldsmith332 That's my favorite three right there. Though I'm guessing I already mentioned that.
@@AtomicSnackBar I believe you did. I have been getting Kino and Criterion for a few years. Last year and this started getting Arrow videos. Got Day of Anger last year. Just got in recently the 4K of Tenebre, Cat o Nine Tails, and Bird With The Chrystal Plumage. There are others but waiting for a sale price. Picked up 4K The Wages of Fear from BFI (England), will see how well they do. Blue Underground and Studio Canal do some fine work as well. And a lot of the bluray releases of the 50s monster movies are pretty good pictur/sound quality.
@@garfieldsmith332 I want to say I have a Blue Underground dvd or two, but I'm not totally sure. Same is possible with Studio Canal.
And nice little giallo haul there. Tenebrae is my favorite of the genre. Cat o Nine Tails, and Bird With The Chrystal Plumage are no slouches either.
That monster suit was pretty cool.
I'd certainly wear it out for a fancy dinner.
Back in the 60's, we didn't know not to open alien cylinders or melt frozen creatures from blocks of ice. Good thing we learned those lessons, though, so the kids of today don't have to make the same mistakes.
Yeah, but the kids of today have taken such a huge step backward, if there isn't a tik tok video about it or a dance challenge, they probably don't know not to open mysterious alien cylinders.
@ AtomicSnackBar - that Zendaya is a 'Movie Star' for them speaks volumes.
Blu-Ray release? Nice!
Not to mention, it's a Kino Lorber release. So you know the quality is going to be good. One of my top three bluray releasing companies.
One of the few things I liked about this movie was Race Bannon.
Well, least you liked something.
Roger T. "Race: Bannon.
This movie is so much fun the inside space ship stuff almost looks like it came out of another movie very mysterious
It does have a really unique set design. But that's something you could almost always count on with 60s sci-fi.
Thanks for stopping by.
Looks like something I had as a model kit eons ago.
@@garfieldsmith332 There is just something so wonderfully model kit-esc about the bright yellow.
@@AtomicSnackBar Yes. A lot of water toys and model kits were molded in bright yellow. I just realized I read the other post wrong. The saucer with the fin looked like one of my old sci-fi model kits from back then. Possible one of the Japanese kits I had.
@@garfieldsmith332 Oh, that's interesting. How did you get ahold of Japanese kits back then?
Really enjoyed this review, and this film looks great with an amazing sea monster - one of the best creature suit designs I've ever seen.
It must have been used in something else? The great Roger Corman would have used it again and again.
It's a great design and a great suit. I particularly like how colorful he is. That blue with the red highlights, really unique. Almost like something that would have appeared on an episode of Super Sentai.
I don't think he popped up again on anything else, other than the Diner Space Creatures figure. But information was rather light on this one.
Thanks, Tachikoma. I'm glad you dug it.
As soon as I saw that 2-man midget sub I immediately thought of Roger Cormans' Monster From The Ocean Floor. Totally different sub, but seeing this one just made my mind go back in time.
Do you remember the parachute man, those little rubber men that you attached to a parachute, then you climbed on the roof and threw him off?
@richardkolhof - I don't think I ever climbed up on our roof, but I do recall flinging him as high as we could into air to get the parachute to open and hope he didn't drift into the neighbor's backyard. Big mean dog equals chewtoy.
I loved those, because, though a toy, it was a real parachute..
Yes! - we got the idea to launch some of them with a wrist rocket
Heck yeah, I do. There is a - I kid you not - Dr. Zaius parachute man from the late 60s that is one of my bucket list toys to own. It's just so wonderfully weird.
Ahh the fun times with those things. We had one of those big box fans. Laid it out flat raised of the floor a little. Yies strings to each corner, then tied them to the parachute man. Turned on the fan. Indoor parachuting. Never got the strings even enough so the guy swayed all over the place.
I think Gary Merrill deserved a cast mention in there. Merrill was seen in everything in the period: Twilight Zone, Outer Limits, Time Tunnel, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Mysterious Island, Around the World Under the Sea, Earth II and his most terrifying real-life role as Bette Davis's husband.
Most certainly. But with the format of the show, I generally only highlight 4 cast members. Merrill would have been a good choice, though. But my admiration for James Hong won out in the end.
@RockOfLions - He was married to Bette Davis !??? She and Joan Crawford are two old school Hollywood actresses that cause me to pull back defensively and switch the channel as the sight of them. I just don't want to spend any amount of time with them. I've always liked him, but now it's like looking at a wounded war veteran. Respect, admiration, and a little bit of pity. Those women make me shutter. Not their roles but their personalities.
Sheree North deserved mention as well.
Loved this movie when I was a kid. My wife and I call it the Space Hotdog movie.
Well, the hot dog is, after all, the most dangerous of all predators at a picnic.
Thanks for stopping by, Brinn.
Good film!
Like a lot of films it includes a 'shoot the enemy with a fire extinguisher' scene! ... love it !🧯
Considering how many times people have shot me with a fire extinguisher, I'm starting to think that is a normal human reaction to things.
@@AtomicSnackBar 😆 hahaha 👍🏻
@ AtomicSnackBar - it was probably on account of that long ponytail you used to sport "You d**n patchouli oil smelling' Hippy!
Now, get out of our Mall! "
As a man who believes that we don't deserve to colonize space until after we've colonized the oceans I love any sci-fi set underwater. The late 80s underwater horror movies are some of my favorites, but this one looks great especially because of how inherently different a movie from 1966 is from all the other ones I know from the 80s
I grew up in the 80s and was a movie buff even then. So I well remember the little flood, pardon the accidental pun, of underwater based sci-fi of the late 80s. I even saw several in the theater. The Abyss, Leviathan, Deep Star Six. Didn't get to see Lords of the Deep until much later, though. But it's a great genre. And this film is quite good as well.
Thanks, Conán.
Somehow I missed DESTINATION INNER SPACE, so it's nice to see that triple-feature blu-ray coming. Well...cheers until next week Mr. Sterling!
And even better, something I forgot to mention in the video ... the blu-ray is by Kino Lorber. So it's pretty much guaranteed to be a great release.
@ AtomicSnackBar - Hm...I just an email that they're having another SALE for Memorial Day...
@@tonysantiago255 Kino is? I may have to check that one out. There's several of theirs I need to pick up.
The creature costume is great but they didn't even try to obscure the true size of those base and vehicle miniatures.
All part of the charm, if I do say so myself.
That cylinder looks like a frozen frankfurter
Filled with yummy monster goodness.
@ AtomicSnackBar - Could be. No one really knows what's in a hotdog.
Great retrospective review first caught Destination Inner Space on TV in the 70s. Only observation is you forgot to mention 1960s babe Sheree North who was in the cast.
I may or may not, but completely am, a bit Wende Wagner biased. So apologies to Mrs. North. But all are lucky I just didn't spend the entire retrospective going on and on about Wagner.

Wow that Mathew Mills clip at #2:12 is a proto-Bender from Futurama
I wonder if Matt Groening watched that show as a kid.

It's well documented that my watch later list(s) have gotten out of control and are in danger of taking over my conscious but this looks super up my alley. And I shouldn't get that kl br for the case of my recent splurge on a limited edition full moon nonsense and the aforementioned watch later list (the physical pile may have moved on it's own recently idk) but it sure is tempting. At the very least, thanks for the info on the upcoming release future RS
I am well familiar with the woes of the ever growing watch later lists. From tubi to YT to my own collection to stuff I need to buy(the Classic Tokusatsu Collection), it can be a hair overwhelming. But, Casey my friend, to quote Winston Churchill, "At one point in his life, all men must buy the Kino Sci-fi Chillers Collection." His words, not mine.

@@richardkohlhof I think you made the right call. You never know when a fishman might attack you in the outside world. You are probably pretty safe in your home. Probably.
@AtomicSnackBar I don't know things can get pretty hairy down there LOL I love the language the writer chose it's really hilariously homoerotic and gives me strong feelings of the classic "Airplane!"
@richardkohlhof - On behalf of 60s Moms everywhere: "Go outside and play!"
Michael Road was also in an episode of "The Wild, Wild West". 😊
Yup. I really need to pick up that boxset. I'm long overdue.
Composer Paul Dunlop composed the score for the film The Lost Continent with Cesar Romero, Hugh Beaumont, Whit Bissell and a couple of other notable actors. It was a massive and bombastic score, especially with horns and percussion.
The undersea lab was cool. The kind that you wish you had when you were a kid.
I love the classic Jonny Quest cartoons. I didn’t realize at the time that Jonny Quest was the most violent cartoon show in Hanna-Barbera’s lineup. But it served a purpose because it showed that evil gets punished.
The monster was a good design, second to the Gill Man. Whether or not Ricou Browning wore the suit and did the swimming parts is debatable. But, some films can have secrets (the film The Man From Planet X never revealed who played the titular character).
It is no surprise that The Abyss, Deepstar 6, Leviathan and many others could have been inspired by Destination Inner Space. Perhaps, even episodes of Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea.
Wende Wagner. Looking back at the many times that I saw this movie on television on a Saturday afternoon, I guess that was the first film I saw her in before I saw her as Lenore Case in The Green Hornet. I eventually saw Guns Of The Magnificent Seven(which is the best of the series second to the first film).
I remember those toys but I remember them in the eraser form. They were sold at the student store when I was in the 6th grade in 1977.
Man, do I miss the classic Sci-Fi Channel.
I'm more so familiar with the Hammer version of The Lost Continent. Haven't seen either of the Lost Continent versions. How was it?
I also mostly missed out on Johnny Quest as a kid. Which was odd, because so much of what I watched was Hanna Barbera reruns. Herculoids, Space Ghost, Birdman, Dynomutt. But they just didn't really rerun Johnny Quest til later.
It's interesting that schools not only had stores, but stores that sold Diener Space Creatures. My certainly didn't. The confirmation that it was late 70s was quite welcome. Thanks, Gary.
@@AtomicSnackBar The Lost Continent with Cesar Romero has been riffed on MST3K and the full film is on RUclips. It’s not like the Hammer Lost Continent because in the Hammer film there was sexual tension in living color(again, in any monster movie where a woman is in the cast, there will be subtle and not so subtle sexual tensions between the male characters. The woman becomes a prize to be fought for).
I haven’t seen Hammer’s Lost Continent in years. I remember the monster battles in that film and the monsters were original in their designs. But the killer seaweed was the best and most lethal in the film.
@@garyreid2178 It's a very unique film and I really dig the aforementioned monsters. But like with most non-horror Hammer, it flies under the radar a wee bit.
I'll have to keep an eye out for the 50s version. I'm not sure I've ever seen Cesar Romero in anything other than Batman.
@@AtomicSnackBar Cesar Romero was one Hollywood’s early Latin lovers onscreen. Before he landed the role of The Joker on the Batman series, he got the role because he was laughing hysterically as he read the script. Later, he was in movies like Vera Cruz(Gary Cooper and Burt Lancaster) and a Disney movie The Strongest Man In The World, to name a few..

You, good sir, need to see all three films. How to Make a Monster is a wonderful little kinda/sorta crossover that completes the trilogy.
"Scientists in an underwater exploration struggle to survive an invasion of monsters from another planet": as far as I can tell there's only one monster. That tagline promises a bit too much.
@wimvanderdtraten6521 - much like the poster for Target Earth. But the coolness factor of both makes up for the accuracy of the quantity.
This fellow has enough charisma and star power to more than make up for the fact that there is only one of him. Sides, we don't know how many of the mysterious cylinders are actually on the ship.
@AtomicSnackBar - The Belly stated he had counted 12. I just watched that HD download on RUclips. Another reason to purchase that Sci-fi Chillers bluray is that not only are all the films sourced from 4k scans, they're all in Widescreen. All the ones on RUclips are cropped TV format, even the 'upscaled' one that I watched.
It looks kind of artsy ❤
The monster is rather colorful and aesthetically pleasing, now that you mention it.

Well, you do live near the beach, so it shouldn't be too hard to find some kind of aquatic monster to bite your wife. Not sure why she was looking for that, but hey, to each their own Friday night hobbies.
And I appreciate you noticing the background. It's coming along. Already a bit different than in this video, but shaping up. @ AtomicSnackBar - Yup, he's in it.
@@tonysantiago255 Well, doubly sold right there. I'll try to remember to add it to my YT list if it isn't there already.
The premise of this film is very similar to a movie called TERROR BENEATH THE SEA by Toei, the wacky guys in Japan that gave us Power Rangers. Interesting tidbits about TERROR BENEATH THE SEA is that the underwater base is now property of the bad guys. The movie deals with reporters (THE Sonny Chiba and Peggy Neal)liasoned to a UN(?) navel base spotting underwater humanoids on a routine dive, they're soon captured by a leftover bad guy organization from some Euro Spy movie that is creating underwater humanoids. Although Japanese produced the film was filmed in English with actors of German descent, fans of the JOHNNY SOCKO AND HIS FLYING ROBOT will recognize the supporting cast since they all had parts in that tv series. Keeping the links with DESTINATION INNER SPACE and Japanese tokusatsu going actor James Hong was involved in a lot of the dubbing voice overs for many of the Toho classics, even working on GODZILLA KING OF THE MONSTERS. His vocal work for the English dubbed version of THE HUMAN VAPOR so impressed actor Yoshio Tsuchiya he had someone thank James Hong on his behalf.
Once again, Mr. Cruz Torga, you are a fountain of interesting information. What's also interesting, is "Terror Beneath the Sea" and "Destination Inner Space" both came out in 1966 and only a few months part. So my guess would be that their similarities were a coincidence, but you never know.
That's really neat about James Hong. I don't think I knew that and I'm a big fan of the Showa era dubs. Heck, I'm a big fan of 60s and 70s dubs in general. They always get made fun of, but there was just something about them that can't be beat for me.

My, my Sterling. You do indeed appear to have swallowed the barium. That shirt is definitely Radioactive! Did you use a blacklight on that thing. You might want to stay away from Giger counters for a bit. I know that I've seen this movie before, but despite my dislike of Scott 'the belly' Brady ( a poor man's Broderick Crawford... which is redundant), the supporting cast warrants a rewatch. Race Bannon √ Babe from the Green Hornet √ And Gary Merrill and Sherie North? James Hong has achieved national treasure status as well. And THATS where The Monster Squad took their design from! I'll give it another shot. But Scott Brady...
That sounds like a challenge to me. Must find an even more atomically designed shirt. Aye aye, captain.
And who knew you, or anyone really, had such strong feelings about Scott Brady. Was it his role in The Night Strangler that got you? Which, by the by, I should have highlighted here.
All Brady aside, do give it another watch. Wende Wagner alone is time well spent.
