Strolling to “Little Sister” in Long Beach
The bridge position has no tone control
Yes - that was an error on my part. I addressed it in the text description for the video. I didn’t know that Fender changed the wiring in the 1970s. The result is essentially the same.
My buddy often played lead guitar for the crickets. Theu made him a honorary cricket. And he has one of Buddys jackets.
Cool! Who is your buddy?
@@WesternBop Albert Lee
The first song i learned to play on guitar back in 1959. Great chord solo.
It is!
Florence and The machine feature on a compilation of BH songs, (Not Fade away) It's amazing!
Thanks for the tip!
If you think playing paradiddles for two and a half minutes is difficult, try playing the snare drum part in Bolero. That lasts fifteen minutes.
Percussionists really get a workout!
Unbeknownst 3rd cousin........looks exactly like Buddy Holly😅😅😅😅 4:18
Yeah - when both sides of the family came to a show they figured it out!
Why is there put vocal with orchestra did Petty conduct the crickets
That’s just how they used to label records. The would also put dance styles on their, left over from the 1930s. Some of the early rock and roll stuff is labeled “Foxtrot”.
Tribute to Buddy Holly (Mike Berry). 1959.
Also - Three Stars (Eddie Cochran) 1959
This sounds like the ramones coulda killed it
💯- Buddy’s stuff translated really well into punk and new wave!
Wow, thank you, sir!
My pleasure!
Very nice! 😃I always thought "That Makes It Tough" was the last one, guess I was wrong. Wow. 20 minutes... If only we could all be that gifted. Buddy was amazing. God rest his sweet soul. ♥
“That Makes It Tough” is one of my very favorite songs of all time.
@@WesternBop Mine too 🥰
I agree with you on the stones cover, its not my favorite buddy song but just too much of their own style, however I don't a genre change to any classic, Rave On by Florence and the machine is pretty cool in my opinion
I’ll have to check that one out - thanks!
ruclips.net/video/U1PyNZJ84LY/видео.htmlsi=JujzPC_5Z_h3WCrg
Pretty cool - thanks!
12 string acoustic is a good way to play Peggy Sue.
The beauty of Buddy’s music is that it can be played many ways and it stays beautiful.
I always liked the guitar chord solo .
Where are you guys based out of?
We’re here in Orange County, California.
I love this video, thank you for sharing
Thank you for the nice comment!
I always think about how young Buddy Holly was. He would have only got better, he was already an awesome song writer with his own style. He was movin fast
I agree, he was really just blossoming as a songwriter.
I wished he had stayed the whole year of 1959 in that apartment and write . Hang out at Greenwich village park and drink cafe , I visit New York this year and I can see why he loved it ❤ We Miss You Buddy
I agree. I visited the apartment building this year and it was kind of magical.
I went to the Crash site Several years Ago. Nothing grows there. No weeds, No Grass Etc...EERIE!
That’s on my list of things to see. I’ve never been there or The Surf.
Thanks!
My pleasure!
That Coen dude from Decca Records didn't appreciate real talent, it seems!
Yeah, he definitely didn’t know what he had!
I'm only 16 and I love his music
That’s terrific. I was about that age when I got hooked on Buddy.
Buddy lives forever
True!
BUD's last songs he penned & taped in early JAN '59 in his Brevoort Apartment, 5th Ave, NYC. - SEE?? Buddy's Guitar, Learning The Game, Crying Waiting Hoping, Peggy Sue Got Married, That's What They Say, What To Do a hoo hoo!!
You’re right, there was a tape in January, but they were all covers. All the songs Buddy wrote were on the tape made in December. He listed them out on the tape box with the dates he recorded them. Learning the Game is the last song on that tape, dated December 17, 1958.
First class well presented.
Thank you!
The KEY in this story is Norman Petty had CONNECTIONS. End of Story. That's how the "Biz" works.
That’s true, but Buddy did record the first version under contract to Decca, so he had made a connection. The second version was just better, and Norman’s connections got it where it needed to be.
Guy sounds like Hayden Thompson. Nice job
Thanks!
Great story including getting the girl. Rock and Roll
Thank you!
I heard from the crickets that the drums was played on on a box of paper and not on a drumset, and yes they make the drumsound through reverb. 👍
Yes, Jerry Allison often told how they used a cardboard box instead of a snare drum for “Not Fade Away”, a trick that Buddy Knox used earlier for “Party Doll”.
Your voice is lovely...nice vibrato!
Thanks very much! Singing gives me a lot of pleasure.
I’m going to Lubbock to Texas Tech University in two weeks and will make a pilgrimage to the new concert hall.
I need to see that someday. I have performed at the Buddy Holly Center, but that was way back before the new concert hall.
By the way, nice job sounds great
Thank you!
I just heard this one of the big reasons I ever picked up an instrument or sang it to mic him and link Wray did some wonderful stuff together
Agreed - Fresh Fish Special is a desert island disk for me!
Also the differences between the two versions of Maybe baby… make another interesting case study.
Yes, those are radically different from one another!
@@WesternBop it is a huge honor to hear from you… It would be great to meet you someday and talk about Lonesome Tears and “ dearest” and other other gems.
I’ll be in Lubbock at TTU in November and it would be great to meet you if you’re there.
I’m not going to be in Texas anytime soon. Have a great visit there!
What a wonderful song ! He wrote so eloquently for one so young. I think he'd be completely amazed (and humbled, of course) if he could see just how much influence his life and music has had over this world. And he had such a sense of humor too! You played that song great , i enjoyed it so much i watched it 4 times ! You tell a story very well too ❤ thank you for sharing a lesser known story about buddy , do you have any more you can share incidentally ?
Thank you very much! I do have a few more at this link: ruclips.net/p/PLuZQvOYI4Na1ozf0ZnwV2JsCzuyDtURJe&si=3BaJDE765KSriAnv
@@WesternBop wonderful, i will check those out ! Have a blessed day 🙏
With no mention of the other backup vocalist June Clark. Jeeze a documentary on a specific song and cant even include all of the people........first,get all the facts together , THEN do a video. The INcomplete True Tale
According to Goldrosen and Beecher, June Clark was probably not there. Neither the Tolletts nor Larry Holly remember her being there. They did rehearse at June Clark’s house, but she apparently felt ill that evening and didn’t make the drive to Clovis. Niki Sullivan remembers it differently, but Beecher and Goldrosen suspect that he may be remembering the demo session for the Tolletts.
Hitting the like button on this was a no-brainer - Fantastic video! (Glad they didn't choose to name themselves The Beetles - what a stupid name for a rock group!).
😂🤣😂
I have been discovering how complicated the recording process can be. I thought making up a pretty good song was the important part.
Yep. A great song is a necessary, but not sufficient. You have to capture a great performance, and it needs to have a great sound. It’s tough!
Interesting - Decca Records also turned down the Beatles, who later covered several Buddy Holly songs. Paul McCartney OWNS the Buddy Holly catalog now. Take that, Decca Records!
Indeed!
Very sad day in music history ❤😢 February 3 1959
Buddy’s got so many great songs a lot of people don’t even know about.
There are dozens!
Buddy was an major inflection point for American music. Virtually everything we hear today has it's roots in Buddy's innovation.
I couldn’t agree more. I’ve always thought that Buddy moved rock and roll beyond the 12 bar blues into something much bigger. Others (like Fats Domino) had a big hand in that, but Buddy made it happen.
A really good and informative video - loved the little demo playing that was included.
Thanks very much!
Excellent!!
Thanks!
I life in Iowa and not long ago a neighbor guy had a poster from the last show and told me his parents took him there when he was 11 and it was tacked up in his garage and he was going to assted living and he gave it to me. True story and m 53
That’s a treasure for certain! I’d love to see a photo of it. You could email me at jpmcdermott@westernbop.com if you’d be willing. Thanks!
Is there any copies of cindy loo in the vaults
Not that anyone knows about. There are rumors that his widow has some tapes, but we won’t know for certain until after she passes.
Decca turned down the Beatles 😂
True! I think that’s why they snapped up The Rolling Stones so quickly. And The Stones’ first release in the US? Buddy’s “Not Fade Away”!
I love buddy holly’s music.buddy put fender on the map.I’ve seen some buddy holly impersonators out there and they look a sound like buddy.🎸🎙👓
Yes - there are some good impersonators out there. I’ve never looked or sounded like him but I love the songs.
Very nice. Thank you, much appreciated.
Thank you - glad you liked it!
