I live in Southern California but literally today, April 16, 2023 I learned about your performance. I would have made the effort to attend. There is absolutely no doubt that the apartment tapes elevated Buddy Holly to the very top of the pantheon of American singer-songwriters. Had these songs not been recorded on that reel-to-reel Ampex machine Holly would just be a “rock pioneer” with three or four really cool songs. This is proof there is a God, if you will. “Crying Waiting Hoping” is the best Buddy Holly song. Moreover, for me it is the best non-Beatle song released in the pop era which I would define as from around 1953 to around 1990, which non-coincidentally was about the end of the vinyl era. I like both overdubbed versions. As you know, the Beatles recorded it live on BBC. That is the good news. The bad news is they had George Harrison do the lead vocals. It is very unfortunate that John Lennon did not do them.
My favorite Buddy Holly song will change from time to time, but Crying Waiting Hoping is always in the top 5. It's a staple of my live shows, a bit more revved up than the usual. Do you know the Wreckless Eric version from back in the Stiff Records days? That was actually the first time I heard the song.
