This video is VERY useful! Knowing the problems someone can have after installing the OS and how to fix them with little effort is always better than trying out for yourself when you don't have much experience to begin with (in my case, with Linux in general).

The answer to video title - yes, objectively. As someone who prefers VSync, it caused me a lot of trouble on windows. Because for some reason whenever there's an artificial limit to framerate such as VSync, the GPU's frequency stays low. Seemingly because AMD driver on windows tries to "guess" whenever you're gaming or not. So when it sees low GPU utilization (such as with a framerate limiter) it doesn't let card accelerate which brought me stutter on windows. Uncapping FPS in the game fixes this issue. But it's just nonsense in my opinion. Linux has no issues with VSync and utilizes GPU properly.

Question is: do you want the impossible with a standardized and main stream like Windows or do you want to gradually tinkering, step by step and starting from (in this case) openSUSE Tumbleweed? The best choice never comes for newbies. Even the sequences on what do you need to install first is crucial. That's why I will always discourage people to chose these distro instead of the main independent ones. Wanna have the chameleon side? Go pure, go openSUSE. Wanna stay Debian? Go Debian 12 and above even if also Mint is a smart solution and more time saver, there is no shame in that. And so on. Tendentiously having the fully independent distro is something that build in your mind the IT education. The order and logic for any configuration system. Reading, learning and giving yourself the right time for your personal learning curve is a must. Linux isn't for newbies that "never have time to learn".

As system76 devs are around here, here is an idea: i think some people (me included) would like to test the alpha/beta and report some bugs if found, but are more everyday users than pros. Maybe a section on GitHub, or a Video on how to: install and use latest version (as stated in the pinned comment) and how and where to report bugs would be beneficial. On the other hand: maybe thats exactly what you don't want as it could potentially create more overhead than actual benefit? Either way: happy bughunt!

NVIDIA's 555 proprietary drivers have finally exposed a new API, allowing for explicit sync directly with the hardware, and when implemented into the desktops as it is with Xwayland currently, should help to remove the vast majority of visual bugs experienced without it. I don't get the wayland hype. I did not see what were your impressions, you talked about the bugs, but what does cosmic bring to the table? What makes it different, the UI only?

Hmm is my title too click baity? Maybe "a quick look" is better than "first impression" to fit my content? I was just checking the status of the alpha version. Sorry for tricking you to click on this.

Wayland is just better bro, it would take years if we wait for it to be perfect. I'm using Gnome-Wayland on my Laptop with Ryzen 5 4600H and Dual GPU (Integrated and GTX 1650). It feels so much better than X11.

It's less about what it brings to the table and more about System76 not having to deal with the Gnome team's BS. They have a reputation for being a PITA to work with. As far as Wayland goes it's newer and more secure than x11 since x11 has been pretty much dead in the water for years at this point.

Thank you, MH! I believe the COSMIC devs will get it right, but it's going to take some time. They're probably still ~2 months away from an alpha release.

Yes I think they are planning to release it on 24.10 or something, I made the video because in the presentation they mentioned wanting people to test on gaming

I dont know if it like this on other distros? but in Garuda I install Steam and Heroic games (for my GOG and Epic games), install the games I want and play (like Baldurs gate 3, Starfield and Fall out 4, all in 4K) I dont have to do anything else than that, no tinkering with Wine or anything else, just install and play, it is as easy as in Windows, as it should be. But I will try Opensuse Tumbleweed (I am kind of hooked on rolling distros nowadays) to see if it as easy to use for gaming.

Sorry but it is not clear to me (honest question): in your trials do you actually say that a Nvidia driver which broke under PikaOS broke that same driver in RegataOS? Because it was the same issue with the same driver on both distros? Or because one distro actually broke the other distro install? (is that even possible??) In any case, great content. Another RUclipsr opinion was to just install Kubuntu with the most recent kernel available and go from there.

Sorry I didn't make it clear, I was meant to say I was dual booting these 2 systems for several weeks on 2 separate SSD and one day after I did a system update on PikaOS, Nvidia driver broke, and I saw the same issue on regata when I booted into regata

Im migrating to Linux from windows and need to find a good balance between gaming and development, i found that EndeavorOS will support most of my monitor technologies because of KDE, i ll go with that one, Fedora is a good one too.

I think you can squeeze bit more extra performance if instead of usual desktop environment you build custom using window manager that has panels included and great selection of plugins because most of resources normaly used by dekstop environment will be used by launcher actualy. Over all great video that reveals that gaming on linux is progressing faster than usual and that could be attributed to microsoft and their decision Recall being the worst as it is huge invasion on privacy gamers don't want that.

Oh good point, geez I love window managers but just don’t have time to build them one by one and then make the video, I’ll think about it , thanks!

Bazzite is pretty good. I still wish valve would officially release it, but I guess this about as close as I’ll get. Beggars can’t be choosers. Glad to have a plug and play windows replacement that works well on nvidia too.

I really do respect the way the garuda folks MEAN things; they genuinely seem to have worked hard to create a distribution that makes "install this and then play a video game on it" as easy + enjoyable an experience as possible. every time I test a game on garuda & then go test it on some other distro, garuda's seamless and the other one takes at least one extra Effort Unit to get up and running.. of course, they would have won my heart anyway just by actually USING the kwin effect that makes the windows wobble around when you move them (which I have COVETED yet BEEN UNABLE to get working ever since I found out it exists), so. I'm biased. dr460nized is cool!! and scythes are cool and gunblades are cool and shadow the hedgehog is cool. I mean it. great video; I've been wondering about this & it's nice to see some data!

I had it with windows. While having a brand new laptop with win11 and IRISxe graphic built on it, after windows announcement about future AI and recall, I I decided to move on. I currently use Zorin 17.1. The installation was easy and while it support running windows software which I haven't tried yet, I prefer a native widows OS so windows programs will run with no issues. Most of my needs are related to music and video. I wonder if this Atlas OS will work with this laptop using all the 16GB ram and having compatible drivers... So, is Atlas build for old PC only or it works also on the latest windows laptop and also run latest third party software?
