Another thing that Garuda does well is configure a few nice-to-haves out of the box.
Things like BTRFS with snapshots, ZRAM compression, zen-kernels.
All things that I wouldn't set up myself but which I do benefit from.

I could never figure out how to get apps to install for Garuda but I was probably missing

Trying new things to get something to work is usually one of the great joys of Linux. :-)

It gets frustrating and annoying really fast when things that are supposed to work break for no apparent reason. I love Linux, but in the short time I've been using it there were substantially more annoyances and breakages than I've had on Windows.

EndeavorOS is a simple “just works” distro. I highly recommend. Coming from a user of Linux for over a decade.

The new ways they go bring some troubles on complex systems. And where ist the benefit over manjaro?

I love it. Especially the installer were I can basically set up a vanilla arch kde with ease. No bloat to delete after the fact.

Tried recently EndeavourOS but it was glitchy as hell with Unity engine and Krita. Got back Manjaro and it just works.

4:25 "Now it gave black screen like Garuda" that sentence triggered a feeling that is so close to my debugging experience for any software. Have an error that is not documented/solved and try to break the software in order to get an error that you know how to fix :)

Garuda is like some overly hawt woman. Oh ya... her sexy exterior will give you a linux woody, but in the long run she'll ruin your life.

I have neither the inclination or the knowledge to spend hours troubleshooting problems while trying to play games on Linux. The best solution for me was to get a Beelink SER5 Mini PC. I set it behind my tv, plugged it in, and have Windows 11. After turning off a few settings, I loaded up my Steam games. All the games played as they were intended, with no special settings or other programs. When I get done gaming, I just switch my tv input back to my Linux computer for everything else. Works perfect, and I have lots more gaming time.
I still enjoy watching your process to get games working on Linux though.

Meh I don't wanna be spied on by Microsoft. If they want my data so badly they can pay me for it. If the data collection was optional AND they paid me for it (I wouldn't even care if it it was like $5 a month Microsoft Store credit or something) I would probably be ok with it but I think we should be compensated in some way for them to get our data.

Thanks so much for this comparison.
I've installed Garuda with an LTS-Kernel on my old MacBook from 2009 with an NVIDIA GeForce 7800 (ironic how AMD and NVIDIA have switched naming patterns somehow lol ) and it took a while of learning and researching - as you've already mentioned -, but in the end, it works pretty stable now.
I don't know out of the box anymore how I exactly did it, but I saved the instruction links in my Browser-Bookmarks so I can hopefully replicate them again.
On another (not quite as old) PC I've had Endeavor OS installed (an older Kernel still - but also LTS 6.6 I think), but the System half-broke when I last updated it sadly, hindering my NVIDIA 1060 to switch to higher resolution (the System crashed but only so far as to tell me it needs a logout and worked when relogging still - but not using BTRFS Filesystem on that one yet and want to install a new Arch-Derivate anyway, why I ended up here).
I guess I'm gonna go with Garuda again, too, on that older System then since I started to like the Cinnamon Version of it and the X-Desktop of Cinnamon still works well enough with the older systems I found - Wayland was a pain in the "backside" when I tried it once a while ago at least with NVIDIA Drivers.
Not sure, but I think I heard/read somewhere, that NVIDIA Drivers (the OpenSource ones as well as the proprietary ones) don't properly support Wayland yet, why there's so much trouble with them.
But your configuration with Bottles (is that what Lutris uses for its Games, too, btw.?) sounds interesting - and that you did get it to work with Wayland really got me curious now.
Well, thanks for this inspiring comparison again and I guess I'll need to go on another bit of a Deep-Dive there.
Cheers and happy Tinkering and Gaming

Haha love your story, you might get issues with nvidia and Wayland back then because nvidia wasn’t supporting the xwayland yet, xwayland is a Wayland client for applications to use to talk to x11 server, which is to solve applications not supporting x11 and it is quite mature now. I admire people who sticks to older hardware with Linux, hope you keep having fun with Linux.

Saying Manjaro is an Arch Distro in 2023 is just wrong. They're gone off so far on their own that they're almost unrecognizable now.

    • @coolworx
      @coolworx 7 месяцев назад +3

Yup. I was Manjaro fanboy for 5+ years, but I finally had to bite the bullet and switch to Endeavour.
It used to be Arch with a 2 week testing period. But now it's just another opinionated distro.
