Unboxing and Reviewing the Stetson Sturgis Crushable Wool Felt Outdoor Hat
In this video, the ol’ History Nerd unboxes and reviews the Stetson Sturgis Crushable Wool Felt Outdoor Hat, which retails for $125…and is grossly overpriced at that amount. We take a look at the features of the hat, compare it to the Stetson Bozeman Crushable Outdoor Hat, and discover that right out of the box, the sweatband is coming apart, which seems to be a common issue with the Sturgis. You’ll get a good dose of our traditional humor along with some outrage at the poor quality control of Stetson.

The 10X Stetson Open Road Hat vs. The 6X Stetson Open Road Hat - A Buyer's Guide and Comparison
Did Tecovas actually say, "We are a fancy boot maker" or you make that up?
I retired from a Battalion who's linage was Cavalry. My Unit of course didn't wear a Stetson Cavalry hat but I have often seen Soldiers who did and wanted so much to wear one. I'm retired now I don't want to wear the Cavalry Stetson, I'm wondering what hat would look nice on a woman. I don't own horses anymore I'm not a farmer, but I would like a nice cowgirl hat with no more than a 4 in crown and no more than 4 inch brim. I'd like one with a neck tie strap to keep my hat on in the windy weather.
First of all, many thanks for your service. The nicer Stetson cowboy…er, cowgirl, hats are not going to have the chin cord. I made a video about the Stetson Seneca, which an affordable but high quality hat with roughly the same dimensions you mentioned. Take a look at that video, and see if it’s what you had in mind.
Great videos, I've watched many, your delivery guys like to throw your stuff a lot. My question is what was the stratoliner named before they rebranded it as the stratoliner?
Nice hat. I don't mind a 3 1/2" brim. Thats what i wear when im shooting my compound bow. Cheers!
I like the crushable hats but I would like a little shape to the sides...is the brim flat all around or is there a way to shape the sides up a smidge?
Floppy brim so you can crush it. No way at all to hold a shape, Bubba.
Can you give me some advice? I want to buy my first hat. I’m looking for something classic and not too expensive. Can you recommend something? Thank you.
Can’t go wrong with the standard 6X Open Road silverbelly. It may, in fact, be the only hat you’ll ever need, Bubba. I’ve reviewed lots of hats though, so look around the channel and see what you like.
@ Thanks 👍
Eddy Bros no longer makes their hats here in the USA, but I really like their cougar model of outback hat. 100% wool lite felt, packable snd crushable...etc. I wouldn't buy one today since they're imported now ,but they were a steal at $50 when they were still made here.
History Nerd, I've missed your videos. Glad to see you're back.
Hey Stetson, unless you give History Nerd some review samples, I'm just gonna buy from American Hat Company instead.
I ‘d love to hear about what type of cowboy hats they used in westerns in the 50’s & 60’s. The material, etc. they seem to be real floppy compared to today.
We need a review for the Stetson Dune Gun Club hat.
I’ve always thought about getting that hat, but it’s 300 cottonpickin’ dollars. The ol’ History Nerd ain’t made out of money, Bubba.
I’ve had an open road for about ten years, it’s my favorite hat, I wear all the time. I’d like to purchase a newer one in a different color but the prices have gone sky high and I just can’t bring my self to get it. I think the retail for thé 6 X is $360, basically double what I paid in 2015. I just can’t.
Inflation has certainly not been kind to the hat market, so I agree with you 100%, Bubba. Prices of many hats are getting a bit crazy. Thanks for watching.
I'm sorry that this hat was such a disappointment. I happen to like wool crushable hats as they seem to fit me better and are more comfortable, for me. I like that Bozeman, but not $12o worth! Make sure to let us know how Stetson treats you in returning this hat.
Good info, thanks!
has the quality of stetson and other once independent hat company gone down or just the price of entry into getting a great quality hat gone up, and would you say that a ten x is what a 6 x use to be at one time
I think the price of entry for ALL hats have gone up considering the Sturgis and the Bozeman retailed for $99 not too long ago, and now both are $125. I also think quality has declined. I've mentioned on my channel that the X-scale of rating hats is completely arbitrary, each company sets its own, and it is more of a marketing tool than a true definer of quality since there is no uniformity, in my opinion. Thanks for watching!
If you haven’t already done it, why don’t you make a video on the multiple bottles of liquor that you have in the cabinet behind you.
I have somewhere between 200 and 300 bottles of bourbon in my collection, but the one or two bourbon history and review videos I've posted have not drawn more interest. The recent one about my attendance at the Brewzle Bourbon Festival did perform well, though. I may try filming another bourbon video during the holidays. Thanks for watching!
Your video actually turned me on to the Brewzle guy. Thank you!
Would the Stetson Powder River be a better alternative if you wanted rain resistant Stetson?
The Powder River, which I have unboxed and reviewed on the channel, or any of the Stetson buffalo wool hats are good and affordable alternatives. Thanks for watching, Bubba.
It just hurt my heart watching you smashing that beautiful hat.
Yes, but I quickly resuscitated it came back to life...all but the sweatband.
glad to see you back on youtube, thanks for the review, maybe Stetson will improve quality control.
Hoping they do. This is the second hat that I have had to return. The first was the blue Boss of the Plains they sent me that was supposed to be brown. Thank you for being a viewer.
Thank you for your sacrifice. o7
...and thank you for watching.
The hat makes you look like a true southern gentleman but you ain't as pretty as the young lady wearing the hat...no disrespect intended.
Good video. I have a black wool felt crushable hat. Not a Stetson but cost around $50. Thanks
I wouldn't mind if you review the hats that you already own so you can save some money. You can unbox an old hat. 😊
Look in his history
Thank you for this interesting and understandably discombobulating assessment of theSturgis. You did help me to understand that the Sturgis and the Bozeman are basically exactly the same. (I have actually lived in both towns, and there is a huge difference!) I think you could start assessing other major hat brands. Maybe Stetson isn’t all that? What if I were to send you a hat made by say Atwood or Cody James? I would be interested to see what you think of their quality. Just a thought. Meanwhile, it is good to see you back in the man cave, sir!
Thanks for the kind words. I’ve always stuck with Stetson in honor of my late father, who was from Texas and wore only Stetsons, but if I have more quality control issues, y’all may soon see other brands featured on this channel.
@ much respect! I lost my father earlier this year. He was from Bozeman Montana.
I’ve seen buffalo hats . What do you think of them
If by buffalo hats you mean the buffalo wool hats that Stetson makes, I like them. They’re affordable and stand up to any weather, but those, too, are cool to cold weather hats. I’ve reviewed a few Stetson buffalo collection hats on the channel.
As usual, nice review. I agree, Stetson should have better quality control. The hat does look good. That is my favorite crown. It is usually hard to find. Funny thing is. I bought a hat on ebay several years back and the guy also sent a cheap crushable wool hat. I have worn that cheap wool hat ever since. It looks like Indian Jones, and everyone makes a comment about it. I have worn it out and need another one. I was hoping this might be it. I guess not.
What kind of a knife is that
That one is just a common OTF knife, but I do have a couple of nice Benchmades.
Every time I watch one of your videos I buy another hat. Not this time. I already had a Sturgis. Keep up the fine videos.
Good to see you back ! Its been a while. Like you I have a lot of hats and I am pretty much good now on hats. My hats are mostly Stetson, some Australian brands and a few from Bass Pro Shops. I do have a couple of crushable hats which I use for yard work, errands , and on occasion trips to the range. They are nice to have around if you are doing something that could otherwise ruin a nice hat like an Open Road . That Stetson is a nice looking hat. The Crushable hats I have are the Western Style felt from Bass Pro, their Redhead line. For the money $40.00 its a really nice hat. Looks more like a cross between a Fedora and an Outback hat though than Western. Crushable hats are useful though and they are definitely a cold weather hat. Great Review as always.
Thanks for the kind words, Bubba.
@@historynerdsmancave7567You’re welcome. Too bad about the hat!I too had an issue once with Stetson. I ordered an Open Road 6x in Fawn which is actually a color. I had to look it up,a light yellowish tan color according to Google. What I got was a hat that someone somehow made and isn’t in their catalog. It was in fact an Open Road and it was in Fawn. The hat however was a Royal Deluxe, I have a few in different colors and it was definitely a Royal Deluxe . It was softer and not stiff like the 6X . The thing is they don’t make a Royal Deluxe in Fawn. Just the 6x. The hat did have the interior lining of the 6x though.Either an employee was having fun screwing around on the factory floor or was drinking on the job! The hat also had some really faint blue powder on the crown. I was able to get it off though. I let them know about it and they were at a loss as to how that could happen. I ended up keeping the hat and they gave me a really good discount on a Cowboy hat ! So in the end it worked out ok. Hopefully they will work something out as well. Good luck!
Excellent video as always, too bad about the quality control, I have just recently gotten into the hat lifestyle and this was my first hat, bought it from an online store and really enjoy it, especially living in Canada where I can wear it during the winter months. On a side note it was also worn in the most recent remake of A Star Is Born by Bradley Cooper's character.
Sretson quality is hit or miss.. sure you can send it back but after waiting 6 months for a 10x straw OR and it coming with crooked vents around it.. who wants to wait for them to make more to replace it? Now my 66 is really nice, no issues.. but if you want a well made felt hat, outdoir type, go to Akubra..
Maybe more history of hats would be cool 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️🤔
I have the sage route 66. I love it, but it has its place. Its light, nice for travelling in. Keeps its shape in the weather. But its no felt type dressy hat. Its nice enough to wear "dressy" but for me its more out doorsy. My akubras and frlt open roads are more for dress.. the crushable wools are great every day hats.
I’ve wanted a Route 66, but it does not come in the XXL size that I need - only small through XL. The Bozeman has been a good hat, but neither it nor the Sturgis are worth $125, especially with the quality control issues too many buyers have had with the Sturgis.
Nice review as usual,,not in the market but very nice…..
You need to get an Akubra hat made in Australia. I have 2 Stetsons and 2 Akubras. The Akubras are a little bit better quality, in my opinion.
Cannot agree more... not a little better, they are much better. @historyNerd, give us a review of an Akubra hat and compare it to a Stetson :)
Hate to say it as I'm a OLD Stetson fan but ya, my Akubra hats are better quality than my newer Stetsons. Peace.
stop pointing at me
Is that the Stetson Marshall hat you have on
Yes, sir. It’s a darn fine hat. I posted two videos about it on my channel.
5x is rabbit fur
How tall is the crown from the base to the highest point of the crown Sir? Please answer, thank you.
Looks good on you!
Golden age of flight, we are currently in the age of sardines 😂😂😂
I believe that hat was worn in a by a wrapper as well. Run DMC or maybe Ice Cube.. Ha
Wow! That’s a lot of information
This was a very informative video. Are you in contact or personally know anything about the Boss of the Plains series made for the Death Valley 49ers?
I posted a video about the Boss of the Plains on my channel, Thanks for watching!
Great job, very entertaining and you look pretty good in a hat.
I bought three different hats online myself for less than 50 dollars, but of course not from a high ranking brand name like Stetson. But since I hate to wear an umbrella when it rains or drizzles, I wanted something "special". By special I mean one of those hats as worn either by Harrison Ford (Fedora) or Clint Eastwood (in "Unforgiven", a Stetson). So I looked around and finally found them, although under funny names such as simply "Indiana Jones Raiders Hat" or "Temple Poet Fedora", and again "Unforgiven Hat". While the "Temple Poet" Hat is by far of better wool quality than its counterpart (the "Raiders" hat) which is rather floppy, the "Unforgiven" Stetson is of a much better quality altogether. Both the "Temple" Fedora and the "Unforgiven" Stetson have the leather sweat band inside and are very comfortable to wear, and both come with a Satin fixture inside, but only the "Temple" Fedora has it imprinted with a World Map (probably marking Indiana Jones' travels). The floppy "Raiders" Fedora is not terrible but not very good either, since as I said both the brims and the edges tend to droop far too much, and since they are made out of much lighter wool, tend to remain like that. All in all I cannot complain for having spent around 140 dollars for all three, but the floppy Fedora can only be worn in the mid seasons and not in Winter, and not even under the rain. The other two have shown their excellent qualities both under harsh rainy days and even under Winter snow, always drying fast (hence water repellent) and always keeping perfectly in shape. All three came though highly well packaged, but not through Amazon, rather from these bargain stores that were offering them at the time. They were appropriately boxed, had a sturdy cardboard ring inside to keep them in shape and were sealed in a plastic bag for extra protection. I have worn them often and for that price I can really not complain. Funny to say, but when you stated that you wouldn't spend over a hundred dollars for a Stetson hat, having had it for less anyway, I thought "clever guy" he's in a league with people like me who know how to buy their stuff wisely, and indeed, I believe that you too are satisfied with your choice. In my view quality does not have to always be pricey and can be found in many other places. Besides, they might not bear the same brand name, but wanna bet? They are probably made by the same maker, only that one comes with the luxurious brand name stamped on it, or even with a label carrying it, while the other is just sold with a divergent or even, as in my case, very funny distinctive name. The quality though is very often the same.
Who makes the raiders. I like floppy and when I Google it I get hats with a raiders football logo
Does the Silverbelly colorway vary from the Open Road 6X to the Open Road Royal Deluxe? Online, I'm seeing are more creamy, beige color on the 6X and the typical "silver" on the Royal Deluxe. Thanks for the video info, sir.
The silverbelly color is usually pretty consistent because lots of law enforcement agencies use silverbelly Stetsons are part of their official uniforms, especially the 6X. What you may be noticing is differences in lighting and quality of various photos rather than differences in the hat colors? A photo with better lighting is going to show a lighter color hat, while a photo with poor or bad lighting will make the same hat appear to be darker. Or at least that's what I pulled outta my butt to try to answer your question, Bubba. Thanks for watching.
Is the color the same as the Powder River?
Pretty dang close, Bubba, pretty dang close. The Powder River might be a hair of a shade lighter…but what the hell do I know? Thanks for watching.
What website do you order your hats from?
Different sites depending upon where I can find the best price, but I buy a lot of them directly from the Stetson website. I usually say where I ordered the hat at some point in my videos.
LOL, I’m glad you mentioned the C&K decanter, because I saw it last weekend when I was visiting and texted friends like ‘what the holy ever loving hell???’ when I saw what they wanted for it (EMPTY!!) I inherited dozens and dozens of vintage decanters from my parents (a good number unopened) and know what they sell for because I inventoried them. I was gobsmacked at the prices in that store.
