I've been described as a paddling fisherman. While I love catching fish from a kayak, long distance paddling and remote camping recharge me like nothing else. My primary focus is the PNW with SE Alaska always my main goal for big multi-week expeditions.

Back on the water and fishing. Hey, It ain't Alaska, but the hits just keep on coming. I landed a big Flathead Catfish off a power boat last winter and my fishing buddy Ray got into some thick slab crappies. Enjoy!

Trip Wrap Up and Review (part 21)

Ferry ride from Holis on POW Island over to Ketchikan. Paddle out of Ketchikan and find a camp for the night only to get hit with heavy weather....again. Then head for a motel for the last night in Alaska. A bit of a review of the trip. Then down to the ferry and load up for the ride back to Bellingham Washington.
Last Day on POW Island (part 20)
Просмотров 5 тыс.6 лет назад
Moving down Portage Bay to Deer Cove. I find a nice island as my final camp site. The rain and wind keep coming until the final miles into Hydaburg. With help from the locals of the town I get a ride across the island to the Holis ferry and head toward Ketchikan.
Alaska Alone - Too Much Tide (part 19)
Просмотров 7 тыс.6 лет назад
I set up my camp in the dark and misjudged the high tide which flooded into my tent in the middle of the night soaking me and all my gear. Bears search for food around my camp for most of the morning. As the weather clears I go in search of the portage outlined on the map at the end of Portage Bay. The only portage route, a shallow river, was blocked by huge fallen trees. This route proves impo...
Alaska Alone - Portage Bay (part 18)
Просмотров 7 тыс.6 лет назад
Underway with a good supply of fresh water and great food I move toward a new opportunity to portage across the island to the western side. I encounter a variety of wildlife and weather along the way. The day ends well past sunset as I try to find a landing spot between the bears at the top of Portage Bay.
Alaska Alone - Finding People (part 17)
Просмотров 7 тыс.6 лет назад
Pushing on from the great waterfall camp that provided a fresh supply of salmon I head north and run into people for the first time in over a week. They load me up with vegetables from their garden and give me enough water to last until the next day. I leave them with some of my salmon and push on. The following morning I struggle to find a fresh water supply but finally come across a stream to...
Alaska Alone - Salmon and Berries (part 16)

Day 2 at the waterfall and I find a salmon dead in the rocks. Not one to waste the gift of salmon I prepare it over the fire. I get some cleaning done and rest up during a rare dry day. Berries that aren't ripe yet cause some stomach issues and I feel the need to move on. Perhaps I should have stayed an extra day but the thought of being stuck out there with worsening illness inspired me to mov...
Alaska Alone - Smoked Salmon (part 15)

This one is all about the pursuit of smoked salmon for dinner. It all comes down to location when finding the fish. I find a large supply of salmon stacked up under a waterfall and manage to get one on my first day. Since I'm running out of daylight I clean and salt the fish and hang it in a tree overnight. The next morning I search for the right combination of wood to smoke the salmon. With a ...
Alaska - Wolf Calls (part 14)
Просмотров 6 тыс.7 лет назад
At first I thought these strange howling noises were domestic dogs, but since I was 20 miles from the nearest home that doesn't really make sense. I later learned that wolves can be found on that part of the island but listening to these howls again while editing the video and how they react to my calling them I'm just not sure that it was a pack of wolves. Maybe someone with more wolf experien...
Alaska Alone - Leaving Hunter Bay (part 13)

Continuing on with the series. A recovery day from the long hike up to the lake just taking it easy and watching the bears that surround my camp. A bit of searching around for a salmon but had to settle for a cut throat or two for the evening meal. Pushing onward the following day heading for another freshwater lake.

@@davegregovich3522 Great to hear that it helped
Wow! Must have been hungry!
@@robertclutter5780 It's still one of the strangest things I've seen while fishing
You kilt that poor fish, Lenny.
Thank you for been awesome 😎 I'm a lady fixing my own kayak and you made it understandable and efficient!!❤
@@BelaPearson-q9f glad it helped
Hay looking for a spot to halibut fish out of a small boat could you point my in the right direction nea bay
My 2 cents fish the conditions not the spots. Big fish need to eat so start at where most the bait are holding

Todd your videos are an inspiration for those of us trying to fish out of sea kayaks and more traditional boats. Great catfish, sorry about the accident. Cheers and be well.
Miss your videos buddy
A mama chickens with her baby chickens 🐔 The kennel idea as an incubator is a good one. Nice to see a post from you, Todd. I hope you're doing great!
Thanks. Yes I'm doing well. The chicks were hatched naturally under the hen in December. These are the first hatched chicks of my off grid farm which was an unexpected gift. Hope you have a great holiday season.
@toddswitzer6799 Good to hear! A nice, cozy, warm bed for the baby chicks! Super great! An off the grid farm? Wow...what an amazing gift! Happy December to you!
Good vid . Amazing how much damage people do to their kayaks. Avoid rocks, grinding and store it right and you wont have to do this.
Don't camp inside Tunnel Island Cave.
Man you got me looking at 500 dry suite 1800 kayak and this is good videos
I’m from neah bay and catch fish commercially that looks like more fun ha
Wow, seems you got it not that deep, probably around 40 feet of water I am assuming?
Around 80 feet if I remember, but I've seen them caught in 30 feet. They follow the bait mostly.
We need more adventures from you.
Don't know if you will see this, but how far of a paddle is it from where you launch?
Swiftsure Banks are about 12 miles from Hobuck Beach, Near Bay. I was a lot younger back in those days. Those days were 12+ hours in the kayak, doubt I'll ever be able to do that again.
Thank you Todd...
What's with the entitlement attitude dude? You sound like a proper trump voter.
you still around ? you videos are legendary 👏🏿 👌🏿
Thank you. I'm still kicking but living inland and kayaking lakes and creeks for bass and crappie just doesn't make for the same excitement as a big springer King Salmon. I'm happy I recorded some of those big catches.
Enjoyed the series thanks! 😎 P.S. how did the aluminum plate stand up to the stainless self tappers? I remember commercial fishing as a kid that stainless fasteners really did a number on aluminum , but then again that was in the ocean. 😎
The SS tappers lasted about 5 years a few are still in but most I replaced with nut and bolts also SS. I began using it as a mini dump truck hauling up to 1500 pounds of stone at a time then things got stressed. The aluminum plate still looks great with a bit of dulling and battle scars, I've never regretted the choice.
10:23 epic view! Not sure if you’re using Cyprus paddle, but this seems not a high angle paddling at 10:00 or is it? I’m new to kayaking, still learning. I bought Cyprus but haven’t tried it, can’t use it yet, isolating.
Ever considered bring a packraft with your for exploring lakes?
Yes I should have brought one but it wasn't in the budget back then. So many lakes are just a mile or two back from the saltwater. Would be the perfect tool for exploring those lakes.
@@toddswitzer6799 I hear you, I've been about to buy a packraft since 2007 or so

Alaska🌵
i eally want to be there..thumbs up
Did you lunch your kayak from WA or OR side?
From WA side. Great fishing in the shallow water around that channel by the coast guard station most boats fly past it
@@toddswitzer6799 thanks for the reply, can you share your launch location? Want to go there, but don't want to waste too much time looking for a launch.
@@sov19871987 it's been years since I've been there but I recall a decent local restaurant in Westport the locals always packed the place.
@@toddswitzer6799 😂😂😂😂. I hope that was sarcasm, because that is how I read it.c
@@sov19871987 lunch launch ha you know my mind is on food. The launch ramp across from Cape Disappointment is good but limited parking. It puts you on good water immediately. Those shallows hold a lot of fish sometimes
Awesome video, really inspiring! thanks for going over the gear list.
Shes a boat eater all right.. and lower flows can be just as dangerous as when shes blown out imo. The boulder fields are misleading, leaving many driftboats high n dry or worse & the routes can change every year. Bogey or Hoh are always good alternatives though..
It's been many years since I ran that river but still remains one of the most technically challenging I've ever fished.
Always enjoy your videos. Blessings from Prince of Wales Island. Question, did you go by Paul Lake when you were over by Kegan Lake? I bought some property over there. Love it..!!
I remember looking at Paul Lake but ran out of time on that trip to get there. You are very lucky that place is magic and still haunts me.
Great video. I've spent some time kayaking in the same area as well as fishing from a sled. One of my favorite places ever.
It's been 4 years since I've been there and it's still the place I want to go back to when I can.
amazing....you made me go sleep.....so boring....dude
Sweet dreams. It's way past your bedtime anyway.

This video was a major inspiration for me to build a cabin close to a lake. I have done that in the last 2 years after watching this. Thanks Todd! Wherever you may be, hope your doing well and I'm patiently waiting for more awesome content of another one of your adventures!
Great to hear about your cabin. I have built a cabin too and I live there now. And that Alaskan cabin in that video was also a huge inspiration for me to build my own. Best of luck to you.
@@toddswitzer6799 So glad to hear from you i was worried something had happened since you hadn't posted in so long. About your cabin...Video please!!!!!!!! I have some on my channel but its been a while since I did a updated vid. I'll have to do a update vid soon and I'd love for you to check it out! God bless!!
Your crazy that was me in that crab boat I remember seeing you out there way out there😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣💥💥💥💥 yea your crazy lol
And I survived. But I always appreciate the working fishermen out there tho many say I'm crazy.
What paddle model is that? It looks carbon fiber. Would you say that those higher priced paddles are worth the extra cash in their lightweight benefits?
That was a Werner Cyprus (full carbon fiber). Yes they are super light but more importantly much stronger than fiberglass. I have chopped thru tree branches with it and it has almost no signs of damage. It saved my crunchy shoulder joints from further deterioration. If you're doing more than an hour or two of paddling around the local lake they are well worth the price.
Well done Todd. 2 things. Why go alone? There are so many guys that would be thrilled to join you it's just not necessary to go solo. And dude, you need a Hobe Outback. Much more stable. Easier to handle with the Mirage Drive and lots more room for gear and fish. Good luck, fish on! Mark in Portland
I go out much farther than most. I've also had to rescue a few that have sworn that they can do it only flip or just fail in one way or another. I go alone and I can save myself if I need to.
Great vid... Thx
Thank you for watching it.
How do you determine the best conditions for kayaking out here? I was kayaking the same area yesterday, it was aweful
You really need to study the winds and swells and tides then fit it all together. I learned from commercial fishermen but I still get it wrong about 10 percent of the time. When it's getting bad turn and get back in.
You are a pussy !!!!!!!!!!
I was born n raised in ketch. All my fam still there. I live in seattle. Why il never know.....
how much does the flatbed weigh? how much does all your cargo weigh?
Scale weight on this truck is 3800 pounds (stock was 2900), the most I've hauled is 1700 which was too much, 1200 is a more reasonable limit. I estimate the flatbed is 500 pounds.
@@toddswitzer6799 Thanks so much for the quick reply. I have the same truck essentially(all stock). I am planning to built a custom truckbed camper. What weight would you suggest to be good enough to drive through mountains? I was thinking 800lbs at the very most, but would would like your opinion. Thank you P.s. its fuel injected
Nicely setup.food in yr own pkts.
Thanks a lot
Amazing video of an amazing adventure.
Glad you enjoyed it
Man so I’m confused do you thin it with anything?
The video shows MEK or Styrene Monomer as thinners, no more than 10% by volume. Acetone is for clean up only.
How you like netting rose fish like that those fish are at the length of your rod.
I only post the successful landings. I loose more at the net than I care to admit.
Canadian study showed the vast majority of people killed by bears, were lone predatory, male, black bears, who killed the people, to eat them. Most dangerous time was mid-August on, because their metabolism has speeded up, to put on fat and the bears are constantly feeling starved. It's either eat "You" or a bunch of blueberries that day.
Guess I got lucky....again
Hey Todd, just found your videos. They’re awesome, thank you. What kayak do you have?
That expedition boat is 1990 Necky Tesla.
Where is a good place to learn where to float. I have a cathcercraft two salt so it's very capable and rafted for class 4 buy I've never been out except with guides.b
In the PNW I'd recommend The Kayak Academy, if George (owner) is still teaching he is one of the best around. He is one of 3 other kayakers that I know of that have crossed the Dixon entrance to PoW Island, and he's done plenty of white water too. Good Luck and stay safe.
You're my hero.
A great day of fishing that I won't forget.
Yeah, you run bear!
They're like big rabbits....most the time.
I so love that howling it's a rare treat even here on the wet cost BC ....... You was blessed to hear that
Yes, I've spent many days in remote PNW and that's my first time hearing them.
