Rain and tide water stink but what a beautiful area.... thank you so much for sharing... I just love the "untouched by humans" beauty of your adventure....mesmerizing!!!
There is a few humans around but the growth is so fast and the country so big that you really need to make an effort to encounter them or find where they've been. I loved the old growth forest of south POW island and wish they'd make efforts to protect it from any future logging but that's probably a dreaming.
Todd, Im watching this one again after a long while , I've watched hundreds of outdoor videos from around the world, I myself take some 100 kayak day trips in a year .......nothing im doing or anything Ive ever seen compares to what you've done ......not to mention the work in doing the films........im always inspired !....with gratitude Rick
Thanks! I put in a lot of effort to these videos as I wanted to share all the details of the trip with family and friends, and I wanted a record I could go back to. Who knows, that might have been my last Alaskan adventure. These videos never get promoted on RUclips because they don't endorse a product or lifestyle. It's good to hear there's a few folks out there that also enjoy them.
Maybe I'd get more views "pretending" to be afraid of being killed by bears in my sleep, but that's not the reality of it. I've heard bears walking a few feet from me at night and I never felt threatened by them. But these are black bear on POW island and nothing like the infamous grizzly of mainland Alaska.
When I'm editing these videos I find that I ramble on, I try to cut them down so I sound more decisive. Talking thru my choices to the camera became part of my decision making process.
"Hey bear, HEY! Im over here..... I've had a rough night and Im in no mood so move it on down the beach! No, but serious, I love you guys.... just not right now." - (Like 7) Hopefully an Eagle will drop you a fish. Keep 'um coming Todd. I watch all your work.
Oh ya that was one of those morning when you just can't get enough coffee down to make it better. That was most definitely one of the low points of the trip.
I'd be happy to be on a trip with you anywhere...You have the right attitude when things go completely wrong. You just gotta take it as it comes and keep plugging. I've had a couple trips in AK not go as planned. One in the tundra on a drop hunt. Everything went "wrong" that could. My buddy and I still feel it was our favorite trip ever. An attitude will make or break the whole deal. I Enjoy the vids! Its almost like I'm back up there.
That's exactly it! I've done the trip with the partner that can't see anything but the problems when things go wrong - hated that trip. A little bit of negative energy can really turn things even worse. When I'm alone I need to be my own cheerleader at times which sounds a bit weird, but as you said attitude is everything.
Great episode! You have inspired me to get back into kayaking (did a bit of kayak/canoe in college). Expect delivery of my new kayak within the month. Looking forward to many more adventures (through youtube and of my own).
What doesn't kill us, only makes us stronger. You must feel quite strengthened after that. I'm wondering if the logging operation wiped out the charted portage path. Thanks for sharing another very interesting chapter!!
A drone would've been handy to have to help scout for that road, and on top of that I'm sure there were plenty of opportunities for some awesome aerial footage. The view down the bay at 12:34 was gorgeous.
I meant to ask you WAY earlier about this, but have you ever tried using a Thermacell Mosquito repelling device? I use one while hunting down here near Augusta, GA, and when I first bought one I was shocked at how effective they are, and how I'd been missin' out on it all these years! They're ~$19.97 anywhere you go for a box with the device, a butane cartridge and 3 or 4 mosquito pads (get ya started).. The "strings attached" is the fact that you gotta buy new butanes and pads for them, but once you experience their effectiveness, it's a done deal!
I've only recently learned about these because I live in the eastern US now. Oh how I needed this system on a kayak camping trip to the outer banks. I am adding a lot more bug protection to my kit these days.
Todd Switzer you should try further North in Prince William. I spent 6 years working from Ketchikan to Kodiak while living on a boat, you are correct in that there is SO much to see and explore up there. Looking forward to your further adventures.
You have a beautiful tug boat named after you, but I'm sure you know that by now. Yes, Prince William has been on my list. I hope I have enough good years left to get up there and check it out.

Anyone else would sensationalize this to heading bears could attack me at night or some such nonsense. Love what u do

Epic adventure mate! Don't envy you that cold night.
I can't forget that night, it rates up there as one of my worst.
I enjoy listening to your thinking and decision making process.

What a fantastic scenery! The nature is stunning.
Thank you. Yes, that last long bay was stunning when the sun finally came out.

Todd, I really like the way you think ! You are the real deal, not a “Phony “ Look forward to more ! Peace
Thank you. We're coming down to the end on this trip.

Gorgeous nature! Thanks for the video, thumbs up from Sweden!

That's great to hear. I've always been happy when I have a paddle in my hands, even on my worst days, I hope you experience the same.
so real and so genuine - full of atmosphere.
Very much appreciated.

Wow Todd, that is some rough territory!!!! I hope there is more!!
Working on the next one, heading into civilization again. I'm afraid all the fantastic wilderness camping is almost over.
A drone would've been handy to have to help scout for that road, and on top of that I'm sure there were plenty of opportunities for some awesome aerial footage. The view down the bay at 12:34 was gorgeous.
I've thought about a drone, it has good and bad points but some of the footage would be amazing and very helpful at times like that. Thanks.
Great video
Thanks for sharing
Thank you DD!

Also, and this was very much to my surprise, even pressured deer don't seem to be bothered by the little scent that it emanates!

Such an awesome trip Todd!! Just keeps getting better I'm gonna be sad when it ends. What is your next trip plans?
The end is near...sadly. Yes, I'm hoping to go back next summer there's so much more to see.

Bear Creek is in Redmond....
Great series PS Portage circa 1910
Thanks. Yes I can imagine that portage bay was open before the felling of much of the forest in that area.
I got soaked just watching ...
Good times!
👍
3:13 bit too much of a good thing, sir.
