    Alder is my choice too for smoking Sockeye. Probably have smoked hundreds of them over the past 43 years living in Alaska. Most of them from the the Russian River on the Kenai Peninsula or from dip netting the Kenai River. I've been so fortunate to be able to live here and enjoy the bounty of fish and game from this incredible place called Alaska. Continue to enjoy your adventure as I watch for the second time.

      You are very lucky to have that supply of sockeye in your backyard.

    I am in awe of your wisdom and breadth of knowledge. From the mechanics of the seine boats, to choosing an appropriate smoke wood. I guess you have had mentors and time between adventures for research. I would still be in the shop trying to figure out how to reinforce and gelcoat my hull. Maybe there is a book there...A DIY KAYAKERS GUIDE TO ALASKA.

      Thanks, I had a lot of great teachers along the way and I survived a lot of bad choices. I still make mistakes but none are life threatening.

    Good to see you back in action, Todd & please keep going.
    I'm inspired by your activity to kayak and fish in my close to home water bodies. At least once per week. This is really "gorgeous" (your phrase) to feel free on the middle of 2km wide and wild Vistula (Wisla) river in central Poland. So far the entire local aquatic ecosystem makes fun of my fishing efforts, but it is going to be changed....

      That's great to hear. I can imagine Poland is fairly cold this time of year.

    Love your videos. I want to get my sea kayak out and do some more paddling but located inland and only lakes. Ops, not thimble berry but Salmonberry Rubus spectabilis, Thimble berry is same genus but different species. If my memory serves me correctly Salmonberry fruits first and thimble berry is later in season,

      You're right. I meant to edit that out but passed over it and forgot about it. I got into trouble eating a green berry - got sick - I'll mention that in my next video.

    That's as fresh as it can get! Hungry now .... So, why the Alder and what would be second choice?

    • @toddswitzer6799
      @toddswitzer6799  7 лет назад +1

      It's a lighter tasting smoke than fir or cedar. Fruit woods are a good choice too like pear.

    How long did you leave that salmon over the smoke? I like that you're seeing a lot more wildlife this trip than you did the last one.

      It spent about 4 hours on the smoke, it came out a bit under done. I did a second one with more heat and it last longer.

    Thank you Todd, I’m enjoying the series tremendously! Question what is your background in the immense knowledge that you have? Did you just grow up around outdoorsman? Do you have a video that mentions your path to this point in your life? Would be very interested if you could reply on this. Thanks

      I'm an oceanographer, that helps with the coastal tidal circulation, fishing and weather. Also I was raised camping and did my first kayak camping trip at about 10 years old. My father drew the plans for the first SOT kayak made in the US (Royak kayaks), I've been in a kayak since I was 7. I get out as much as possible, but work gets in the way of my fun at times. Still Alaska is large and new for me, I don't think I have enough years left in me to explore it the way it deserves.

      Todd Switzer Thank Todd for your reply to my questions. Very interesting background and since you make it seem so easy, your explorations that is, it now makes total sense.
