if you rub lead (from the pencil next to you) on the blank side of the paper, then do exactly what you did with the tracing of the lines, you will get a carbon/lead transfer and will more easily see the lines.

I know this was a couple of years ago but, you sure have a good selection of chisels at your disposal ? Are you sponsored by Shaff tools or do you just like them ? For me I prefer pfeil, very very well made and absolutely razor sharp straight out of the packet. I got started during covid lockdown, doing different bits and pieces and love it, I've always loved working with wood. The piece you are working on I'm guessing it's Basswood ? I hate to think 🤔 just how thick this piece was at the start of this project ??? Not sure exactly where you are ? But I couldn't even think about using Basswood as it's far too expensive. I normally have to go to our local forest and get wind fall birch, willow, or something else. Good to watch and informative 👍. Cheers Les.

Very cool. I haven't done any of this since 4th grade, but always loved the possibilities. Might I recommend purchasing and using a woodworker's cabinet scraper to lessen the peaks and valleys of the wide, unprinted areas? A razor blade used at a steep angle to scrap the surface might also work. Also, you might try masking the broad areas with painters tape and removing it after you roll on the ink?

I cringed every time you had your fingers in front of the chisels and when you were pointing back towards your body. I’m new to carving but I know the rule about pushing blades away from you. I also have enough scars on my fingers and hands to prove it is an easy role to forget.

Very nice video. I see you dug into wood like butter. What kind of wood is that. Is it Bass? I had a piece of oak. I tried your technique. My wood was splintering instead of cutting. Either the wood is too hard, or my Loew Cornell 12 pc set is not sharp enough. Now, I'll have to find sharpening tools.

Excellent job Lucas. I’m a 72 year-old newbie to wood carving, I live in Alaska, and have ready access to all the cottonwood bark I can carry, lol. I’ve done about 10 Wood Spirits and everyone that sees them really likes them but they’re not where I want them to be. My goal is realism and I want to see that person in the bark looking out at me. This series is exactly what I have been looking for and I will buy every tool that you have recommended in this series. I want to make sure you’re compensated For your work, as you are a master, both has a wood, carver, and an instructor. I greatly appreciated the way you did this series and I know that my next Wood Spirit is going to come out much better. Thank you for a job well done and tell me how to buy the schaaf tools so you get credit for them.

If you want to learn letter carving please watch the video "W055 How to Carve Letters by David Reilly" The reason the madcarver is teaching this slower and much harder way to carve letters is because "Schaaf tools" do not make all the correct chisels and gouges that are proper for letter carving.
