Victorian Transport History
Австралия
Добавлен 21 мар 2023
A guy who likes all things (Victorian) transport related.
I make usually short documentaries about the Victorian Rail Network (might make some non rail content soon). I have two on going series', V.r In Steam (Basically just history on Victoria's Steam Locomotives), and Victoria's Forgotten Rail Lines (As the name suggests, a series where I talk about Victoria's closed Branch Lines). I do occasionally sprinkle in videos about odd topics about Victoria's railways.
I used to film on an Olympus Om-d E-m5 Mark 2, then it shattered into 4 pieces.
Now I film in an Olympus Om-d E-m10 Mark 2
I upload every, usually every week but school exists so :/

History on the V.r A2 Class (V.r in Steam)
The A2 was one of the longest service passenger express engines on Victorian metals, from 1907-1963 these machines hammered along the line, and here is the A2's story.

Some extra info on A2 996, and A2 964 which was cut for time A2 964: A2 964 was built at Newport Workshops and entered service in 1921, as a member of the 10th batch of Walcheart engines. It was built superheated, and was converted to oil firing in July 1946. It was taken off register in January 1964, and was placed in storage at Newport Workshops for a few years until 1969. When it was transferred to Edwards Lake Park via low loader from Reservoir Station. It's still there today, although you can no longer enter the cab and it has seen far better days. I remember playing on it when I was younger, and it might have been one of the reasons I have an interest in railways. A2 996: A2 996 was built at Newport Workshops and entered service in 1916 as a member of the 9th batch of Walchearts Engines. It was superheated in 1918 and was oil fired in June 1946. It had pretty much the same career as all the other A2’s and by the 60s it was also designated for goods and Passenger trains around the Geelong and Ballarat area, which is where most of the A2's worked in their twilight years. However it was one of the A2’s which hauled the very last broad gauge spirit of Progress. It was placed off register in November 1963, and was sent over to Echuca wharf and plinthed at the Station display. It had company tho, in the form of Murray River paddle steamers that operate from this historic river port. It was actually occasionally steamed up, although never moved. During the late 1980's or early 1990's the boiler cladding was removed to limit the spread of decay. With the loco repainted in a bright red primer layer but no outer coat. In 2002 West Coast Rail planned to restore the engine to Main line service. 7 June 2004 it was towed by Y112 of all engines over the newly re-laid wharf branch and stored at the old Echuca loco depot. With its next destination the WCR workshops in Ballarat East. Unfortunately these plans fell through and it was stored at Echuca Loco depot in this siding for over a decade. However it was saved from the siding on the 24th of December 2015, when the loco was road hauled back to Echuca Wharf by the Shire of Campaspe, and it has since returned to static display with new boiler cladding and a fresh coat of paint.
:(
I love the A2’s they are one of my favourite steam engines and do you think that you could do a video about the narrow gauge Na class steam engines that would be awesome
minor correction, the driving wheels were 73" not 75". 5:10, i doesnt surprise me there was a list. dad drove and fired steam engines in the 40's and said every steam engine had its own distinct personality. when he retired he got a copper etching of an a2. they were highly regarded.
@@vsvnrg3263 Was it a paper list? Or where the notes marked on the engines somewhere
A2 996 has been moved to the Port of Echuca and looks MUCH better than the photo provided. I should know, I saw it being moved (on a truck) and still see it once a week as I live in Echuca
@@lauriewhite8153 I have written about A2996, although it was cut for time. I'll post them in the comment section in a bit
@@VictorianTransportHistory A2 996 has SOOOO much history, I was surprised you didn't include it. It was moved back and fourth between the wharf, was in steam stationary for a few years, and almost restored.

Here’s an interesting fact about the A2s: In the 1950s, VR was looking to give their E, Y, D1/D2, and D3 classes automatic couplers and were about to scrap some A2s at the same time. This led to an idea where headstocks containing the desired automatic couplers from the A2s could be reused for the older locomotives mentioned above. The E, Y, D1 D2 and D3 locomotives eventually received these hand-me-down headstocks with their automated couplers which gave the appearance of them being wider than the actual engine they were assembled to. Unfortunately, most of the engines fitted with these didn’t last long in service post rebuilding, however many others did.
Well done mate another great video
Great video, highly enjoyed it
Another excellent video, well done 👍
Awesome premiere mate! Very well edited
By far my favourite 4-6-0 type of any railway in the world. Keep up the great work !
I think VR had plans to keep this line open for longer as i remember reading on railpage VR had plans to build diesels to run on the line and they also had plans to build two more G class garratts
@@TrainBloke38 Yeah that was the plan, I know about the diesels but not the garrets. Thanks for sharing
Im not sure if this is true or not but i remember reading on railpage that VR had planned to 2-8-2 tank engine version of the K class
@@TrainBloke38 Would have been very very early drafts. D4 classes existed and the V.r didn't really need any more tank engines
Enjoyed a ride on A2 on Saturday was great to see,
So interesting. The endeavour to get rail services running in those early days was amazing. So many abandoned rail lines if you know where to find them. One in particular comes to mind, the Koowerup to Strzeleckis terminating on the Korumburra Warragul road. How they managed to build a line that got to that remote area Is so intriguing.
I don't know what research you do before making these videos. A little more effort and digging, this could be a good series
Poor y109 😭😭😭 thats how you butcher a locomotive
Great video! Fun fact, the entire port Kembla steelworks network is 85 kilometres long in total!
Might have been said by others but the embankments were required to do flooding
Could we run a melbourne to healesville metro or v/line? We could promote it as a better way to reach healesville sanctuary
"Will it survivve?" Check spelling.
I rode this train from Somerville to Hastings back in 2013. Extremely dangerous & very illegal. 8/10 for fun though. Would not recommend
Thanks you cleared up a few questions I had.
Why do you talk so fast?
3:00 it is Black Saturday
Is there still line there
Heritage Railway, from Healesville to Tunnel Hill www.yvr.org.au/
Burgoyne is pronounced Bergoin
I live a few doors along Coleman St from the Bourke st level crossing in Wagga. We have a good view of the railway line. The "empty" train goes through around 7am heading north to Port Kembla. A few hours later, the loaded train heading south passes here before mid-day. The times vary quite a bit. I enjoyed your video - well done.
The Alexandra Timber Tramway at various times were interested in extending beyond what amounts to a circular loop around the station and back with a few works sidings... one option was to extend back to Koriella (originally Alexandra Siding), with the possibility of Yea or Bonnie Doon eventually - this was before Rail Trails were even considered... the more promising option was to reconstruct the original Tramway to the Rubicon Forest, initially to the timber mill 500m away.
I think it was a slip of the tongue.... it's Menzies Creek in the Dandenongs (ie. former Emerald/Gembrook line / Puffing Billy), the long serving bus company in the Yarra Valley is McKenzie's - they operate the Route 684 formerly Spencer Street to Eildon via Healesville, Marysville and Alexandra, since curtailed to Ringwood - Eildon via Healesville, Marysville and Alexandra. As for the Healesville station, it seems similar in design to Alexandra, down to the forestry infrastructure. There were very vague plans at one stage to extend the line from Healesville to Marysville and even Alexandra.
@@PiersDJackson Yeah, Slip of the tongue for Menzies Creek and 685 bus route, Sorry about that 😅
@@PiersDJackson As for it being similar to Alexandra, alot of stations are similar to Alexandra as they are Gisborne type stations. Although I don't think Healesville is
@@VictorianTransportHistory the McKenzie's routes are both 684 and 685 - which is their former Healesville - Chirniside Park via Lilydale, now terminating Lilydale via Healesville Sanctuary... they also operated former routes 686 and 687 - Healesville loop via Badger Creek & Healesville Sanctuary, and Healesville loop via Chum Creek & Mount Lebanon, respectively.
What do they do with the coils at Hastings?
The coils are fed through a line that treats and coats the steel usually zinc. 3 of these lines at Hastings they are massive bits of gear. The treated coils are reduced in size and transported by road to a facility in Dandenong to be painted and or shaped into roofing or flat sheets. The sheets can be used for car panels, white goods and building materials.
The "Spirit of healesville" rumbled through platform 3 at Burnley around 1983 and I haven't since it since. Electric suburban trains must be extended to Yarra Glen as a priority.
They go right past the Frankston cricket ground. Players think it is an omen and a wicket will fall.
Good info on this commonly seen freight train, living at Glenhuntly on the Frankston line very familar with the steel train, coming home recently after 9pm saw it travel through the new trench railway through glenhuntly 👍
Re your comment about coil weights ... a loaded RCJF is anywhere from 65 to 76 tonnes, depending on coil size. The tare weight of an RCJF is 22 tonnes, so each coil is around 21 to 27 tonnes, definitely a weight requiring a great deal of respect when being moved by the reach stackers. Obviously precise placement of the coils in the cradles is important for balance & weight distribution, sometimes necessitating the coils being repositioned before the locos can be attached. The night shift 40 block, running as 9569 can weight anywhere from 2,600 to almost 3,000 tonnes. There have been times in really poor weather, where it's raining & windy, where the climb up through Leawarra to Langwarrin is fraught with peril where loss of adhesion can get the train down to scarily slow speeds, or on a few occasions, the train stalls, unable to keep going. If unable to get it restarted, the train has to set back to Frankston to drop off part of the loading, obviously causing massive delays & service disruptions. Generally speaking, the vast majority of services run to plan, with most disruptions caused by external factors, eg : track occupations, system failures, extra Metro services, or Metro trains issues.
Always wondered where these trains went and why. Nice.
