Man, I watched Twilight Zone (reruns) at ages 5-7 and it Never scared me. I was 12 when Night Gallery came on and it scared the holy crap out of me. All those paintings coming to life, paintings grabbing people and pulling them inside. Nightmare fuel! I couldn't watch it. I had to leave the living room. Now, it was okay when ESP took over. I liked it then.

I like how this story has been told and retold for centuries. It never dies, it just keeps getting updated for modern audiences. The story always revolves around the most mysterious place people can travel at the time. The oldest version I'm aware of dates back to the 13th century and is called The Wandering Jew. It's a Christian myth about a Jewish man who taunted Jesus as the latter was on his way to be crucified. The Jewish man was cursed with immortality and had to wander the Earth forever, until kingdom come. Back then the landmasses weren't fully mapped out (the Americas weren't even discovered yet) so the land was mysterious. In the 17th century, travelling by ship was the big thing and the oceans were seen as mysterious. As a result, it was updated and became The Flying Dutchman where the titular ship must sail the seas forever. In the 20th century, we got two new versions in quick succession, told multiple times in different ways. First, there's the aviation version as seen in this episode of The Twilight Zone and legends based on planes disappearing over the enigmatic Bermuda Triangle. Then there's the space travel version used in shows like Lost in Space or Star Trek, also in the 20th century. To this day, that's the one which keeps getting retold as space is still a mysterious place which isn't fully explored. We've barely scratched the surface in that regard.

This episode is dripping with allegory, as TZ episodes often do. It also is a reflection of a society uneasy with itself. Change seems to come faster and faster and not everyone is comfortable with it. There was a sense in the early ‘60s of moving into a new age with some feeling unconnected, uncomfortable with the direction society might be heading but unable to stay where they were.

I loved the original King Kong as a child, and to this day, I still love seeing the T-rex fight. Then, when I got older, I was able to enjoy the plot of this episode more and start to really appreciate their predicament. I got Betty Garde right away. I was pretty confident with Comi only to then look it up and realize I was wrong. It was a good question. Great stuff.

The optimist in me would like to think they made it home to the correct year. The pessimist wonders if they ended up in the future, and had to deal with the ripple effects of going missing for years and the world moving on with out them. Sort of like the scenario with the boy in Flight of the Navigator.

Has anyone told you that you sound like Joe Pesci? Lol! This is a fave of mine, I'd watched a couple of the ones high on your list a few years ago when I got my first roku smart tv which then had its own set of channels with things like classic movies and TV. The good old days! Now almost all I watch is RUclips, lol. A few shows. I may want to seek this one out again!

Let me understand this cause, you know maybe it's me, but I sound like Joe Pesci how, like I'm a clown, I amuse you? 😁 😁 😉
