Wow! This episode is so relevant now. We have people acting just like Crangle all over the web. And it's nice when they get their just reward. Wouldn't it be cool if they turned out like Crangle? Not hurt but easy for all to see and shame.

Actually, I see the main character having much in common with Trump supporters and the far Right. He viewed those with a different world-view as being part of a vast conspiracy or deep-state. In today's world, it is the Right who are constantly spreading conspiracy theories and complaining about the "deep-state".

Hey, Anthony! Your breakdowns are always so enjoyable. This one went in a direction I was certainly NOT expecting.
Ironically, not knowing anything about the alternate ending, I assumed when Crangle falls down in dread, there was an implication that Pete was about to devour him.

This might be one of the few instances where I actually enjoyed the radio drama more than the episode. The radio dramas tend to be rather hit and miss, especially the ones attempting to adapt episodes from the show, but Stan Freberg's eccentric performance really sold the Crangle as an unhinged narcissist.

As you point out, this episode is still highly relevant in the age of self appointed social media watchdogs who will trawl through people's Twitter accounts and histories and not stop till they come out and wail "you should hate this person here because i have evidence here, proof undeniable that 25 years ago when they three years old they called someone a racial slur! Hate them and boo them and jeer them because they did a bad thing once!"
And the saddest thing of all is that example is only slightly hyperbolic.
There's a terrible belief online that people cannot change or grow. That to change one's mind is a weakness, a lack of conviction or strength of character because you did not remain steadfast in your opinion against the tide of evidence that countered your views.
People seem to believe that someone who never changes their mind is somehow trustworthy and reliable. When it's the exact opposite that is true.
Again, the fact that I'm only being slightly hyperbolic is telling.
The music has changed but the song remains the same.

Hey Glenn! Very well said, people can change and grow for the better, that's one of the great things in life. But as you also noted, there's also the idea that changing one's mind is a weakness. So someone could be bashed for supposed past misdeeds, but also be bashed for changing. Sad but true. Thanks for the comment and the watch. Have a great weekend.

Crangle is a piece of work. I don't claim to be in expert in psychology, but he has the traits of a sociopath and some type of paranoia. If you ever watched the anime Death Note, Crangle reminds me of Light Yagami playing God enacting his own idea of justice ridding people.

Afternoon, Anthony! Hope all is well for you today.
As usual a long-ish comment on the episode, so glad you don't seem to mind the meandering thoughts of of someone old enough to be your grouchy Auntie.
Now to business on the algorithm...
I have never seen this episode, and now that I have this review, I can't wait to take it all in.
In fact, just on what you've shown, I'd rate this puppy much higher.
You've got a top actor in Theodore Bickel, an amazing script that holds up over the decades...and considering the subject matter, I wish it hadn't and that you youngsters would be scratching your heads wondering about the weird device the bad man is telling lies on...*sigh*
Speaking of what the bad man is doing, I not only think that it mirror's the current political climate all too closely, (and I will leave the remarks at that - do not want to get bogged down) I would say that Oliver is not mentally ill...or at least, not originally mentally ill.
I would conjecture that he is evil; evil , pure and simple.
The man wants to bring about a world in his own self-righteous image...except that he hasn't looked in a mirror for quite some time, and there's a mote the size of an elephant in his eye. He is the worst kind of evil, in that he believes that evil is objective, so long as he is the judge of it.
Like the Nazi Party and their adherents, they really believe the crap they are spouting, they even think they have scientific proof to back it up...(a side note: many Jewish actors make very good Nazis on screen, mainly because they have been forced to endure the crazy and stupid up close and personal for centuries before eugenics and NSDAP codified it, so they know intimately well how these people think and act).
This is not madness; not a mental illness. They could tell you that they know the difference between right and wrong, they have just chosen to define "right" and "wrong" by a different yardstick. Tolkien once wrote: "To crooked eyes, truth wears a wry face" and I can put it no better than that.
However, the two can overlap - madness and illness can creep up and create a dynamic that will feed one into the other until they become indistinguishable from the other...but that's the end of the third act, not the beginning or even the middle. Hitler was not crazy, not mad, not mentally ill, when he was paid to spy on the early Party. They were radicals, not madmen, not escapees from the local asylum. In fact, if Adolf had started as the nutcase you see in the Fuhrer bunker of Downfall, the entire squad of followers would have either run or just gotten the nice young men in the clean white coats to take him away.
Nope, Oliver Cragel was not mad or mentally ill at the beginning, but he had already fallen to evil, and that it harder to stop. Evil is chosen; madness is not.

They make death threats, get people fired, etc. -- just like Crangle. But we get no objection from Cheetah because he is so blinded by his own prejudice and hatred that he's unable to recognize what is happening.
