That's the thing with warnings. They are often given at a time before things have got that bad, so most people don't really listen if they feel that they are living in relative comfort. I remember when this was first on television. Hi thought it was one of the best television shows I’ve ever seen. Course I felt that way about several twilight zones. I have been watching The Twilight Zone since I was a kid back in the 1960's. I have watched many marathons, and have loved every episode. Thought I had seen them all. But I've never seen this one. Pretty shocking this one is. Pretty terrifying when you consider how close our society is to this state today.
Serling was brilliant!! This episode is now our reality!! He knew what was coming, and through this show tried to warn the masses! But like then as now, many don't listen!

In 24 minutes, Serling dramatically captured the evilness of censorship. Elegantly acted by Meredith and Weaver as the protagonists, this episode features Serling's best writing. His intro and outro are brimming with caution against accepting dictatorship.
Only thing is Bradbury, despite absolutely writing about the dangers of totalitarianism and censorship, was not trying to write about the dangers of totalitarianism and censorship, he was trying to write about how much he hated television.
We warn people about the fascists trying to take control, but they ignore us because Orange Man Bad. Before they said that Orange Man would get us into world war 3, but under Potato Joe and Hyena Harris, we are 1 minute to midnight, and they cheer world war 3 to happen.
Such a good scene. The acting, setting and the best of all the ideas conveyed. And that end quote: "Any state, any entity, any ideology that fails to recognize the work, dignity, the rights of man, that state is obsolete" is enternal and can be used to critisize any entities, ideologies and states.

Burgess Meredith is my favorite actor of all time, in part because of his work on TZ, Batman 66, and the Rocky films. Fritz Weaver chewed the F*** outta the scenery on this one too.
He was also the original actor for George in "Of Mice and Men", and his performance was so iconic (along with Lon Chaney Jr. as Lenny) that it was parodied countless times in MGM cartoons.

That's the thing with warnings. They are often given at a time before things have got that bad, so most people don't really listen if they feel that they are living in relative comfort. The warning doesn't reflect their immediate experience.

I remember when this was first on television. Hi thought it was one of the best television shows I’ve ever seen. Course I felt that way about several twilight zones. But this one this was very special and even though I was a little kid I understood it. Amazing. And now we’re living in that world but many don’t realize it

I have been watching The Twilight Zone since I was a kid back in the 1960's. I have watched many marathons, and have loved every episode. Thought I had seen them all. But I've never seen this one. Pretty shocking this one is. Pretty terrifying when you consider how close our society is to this state today.
Serling was brilliant!! This episode is now our reality!! He knew what was coming, and through this show tried to warn the masses! But like then as now, many don't listen!

Burgess Meredith had a couple of the most memorable moments in the Twilight Zone.
Along with Orwell's 1984, ( 1949, ) and Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451, ( 1953, ) many authors had warned of the danger of totalitarianism. In 24 minutes, Serling dramatically captured the evilness of censorship. Elegantly acted by Meredith and Weaver as the protagonists, this episode features Serling's best writing. His intro and outro are brimming with caution against accepting dictatorship.
Only thing is Bradbury, despite absolutely writing about the dangers of totalitarianism and censorship, was not trying to write about the dangers of totalitarianism and censorship, he was trying to write about how much he hated television.
We warn people about the fascists trying to take control, but they ignore us because Orange Man Bad.
Before they said that Orange Man would get us into world war 3, but under Potato Joe and Hyena Harris, we are 1 minute to midnight, and they cheer world war 3 to happen.

Such a good scene. The acting, setting and the best of all the ideas conveyed. And that end quote: "Any state, any entity, any ideology that fails to recognize the work, dignity, the rights of man, that state is obsolete" is enternal and can be used to critisize any entities, ideologies and states.
The one thing that I really liked about this episode was that it didn't rely on any sort of supernatural person or event to accomplish the story line. This could and does happen in the everyday real life!

Burgess Meredith is my favorite actor of all time, in part because of his work on TZ, Batman 66, and the Rocky films. Fritz Weaver chewed the F*** outta the scenery on this one too.
He's also in another Twilight Zone episode which involves a library.
