Its a sin to paint good wood!!!
Shane i have been wanting to build a two piece longbow, i have watched your vids. This video makes me ask if i can use maple for the tenon or do i need something harder. 45 pound bow. Thanks
@@jimfogleman4599 Hi Jim, sure you can use maple in your riser, and there's a chance if you just used solid maple that it would have good longevity, however it's not absolutely foolproof until you add at least .25 thick I-beam or spar lineally through the tenon and riser. If you want to go that route I'd be happy to sell you an I-beam that would already be ground and ready for glue-up
@@greatplainsbow I do have solid maple in the core with hickory laminated around it. Thanks for the reply, as I have the riser glued up I will give it a try. I will contact you for the I beam on my next try. Great RUclips channel and thanks so much for thr reply. Jim
@@jimfogleman4599 thanks for watching, Jim! Good luck with your project!
that's simple and great idea!! thanks for the video
Is the belly horn ? Or just the overlays
@@JoelWigginsjr it's just the overlays. I can see how the title would be misleading. Never thought of that till now
Very informative video, and presented very simply and clearly. As an amateur bowyer, it helped me greatly. I noticed you didn’t pull the bow at all after removing material from the limb. I’ve read that this allows the limb to adapt to the removal. Do you think this is helpful or not? Thanks.
@@stringbean585 oh I pulled it a bunch it's just not on video, but it's not that necessary. You're gonna shoot it anyway to test it
How do you fix the reverse tiller on that?
Absolutely one of the coolest bow rework videos I've seen. Yes, I watched both episodes. Great job. You are a true craftsman. I would really like to shoot one of those old solid fiberglass bows some day.
Hey thanks for watching!
Great Work Shane!!

Shane, is it possible to repair my Bear Grizzly that delaminated? This was my go-to hunting bow since I bought it new in the 70’s. I would love to restore it if it’s possible. Thanks. Joel in Montana.
Now i know what my next bow is gunna be as soon as I'm able to swing it until then i have to reduce this montana by 10# it is 60# @28" do you think trapping it and sanding the belly glass would do it or sand the back and belly
@@davemartin8113 trapping it and sanding belly will go a long ways
That bow is gorgeous
You do extremely good quality work
@@MikeFerguson-yq2jh Hey Thanks, Mike! Thanks for watching!
@@greatplainsbow I have built guitars and mandolins for many years, i would suggest finding a 1/4 sheet vibrating pad sander with a soft sole for doing the finish work, those random orbits take to much off at time and will actually dig divots if you don’t use extreme caution
@@MikeFerguson-yq2jh thanks I'll keep that in mind
These bows have the same profile as the Ragim Wolf 68 inch, I think they might be the same design.
@@CamelCasee I see. I've never had a Ragim Wolf in my hands before
@@greatplainsbow For what it's worth they share pretty much all of the points you made in the video about this bow, handshock and don't cast very far, high arrow shelf and low grip. They tend to eat strings from the stringing and unstringing process too.
@@CamelCasee hey I really appreciate that info. Thanks!

Man i have a 60# bear Montana longbow that i need down to 45#-50# cause of rotor cuff injury but looking at the glass i dont know if its thick enough to do this and not ruin the bow i dont have a income right now so i will do the work myself are you familiar with this bow or know if it has enough glass to reduce and not ruin it any help appreciated.
@@davemartin8113 sure I've reduced bear Montana's before. Easy bow to reduce. Just take it evenly off the edges of the belly using the trapping method. I've got numerous videos where you can see me trapping the limbs
@@greatplainsbow What's the title of the video where you trapped the longbows

At first I thought this was a video showing how you put the green on it. That simple green pattern looks like it works better better than all the fancy BS camo pattern showpieces on YT. Oh well..

10 minutes is a bit long to watch someone fiberglass wrap anything. I think most people would get the gist of it at a faster less boring speed (say 40 sec..) I was dozing off but the music was annoying enough to keep me awake enough to stop the video.

Hello, removing paint from Wing Falcon, found 1/4" crack/split string groove back of bow. Will tip overlays fix or keep Crack from ruining bow. Crack is in back glass, belly glass is sound.
The optional paint on these old.bows is awful
I shot many bows as a teen varying lbs and various types. In my 40s now wanted to get back into it so i got the black hunter recurve. So far i like it but i can feel its lacking. Im a bit out of touch on newer bows. What in your opinion is a good bow to move up to price range 300-500. Im interested in getting into tourneys if i can. Im a pretty good shot.
@@nicholasosborne1356 That's a good question and I'm not sure what would be the best bow in that range, but I'd say go for a bow company that isn't production line, but is a reputable company built by hand. The $300-$500 range might be tough as that range is still kinda from production line companies
I have one just like and its going to make great fire wood. DONT BUY ONE THERE JUNK
Hello, Say you wanted to reduced this 48# down to lower 40s# .Would focusing on the recurve tip are to reduce the weight reduce the stacking or likely cause a Too weak end section?
@@str8sh2ter that's an excellent question. In theory and probably also in action it would reduce the stacking, but it would make the limb unstable and likely cause a failure. The performance of a bow is determined in the limb profile by the bowyer when the bow is glued up. After it is in it's final shape you must remove material evenly along the entire length of the limb or it will compromise the bow
@@greatplainsbow Great answer. I was thinking along those lines but wasn't sure. Thank you very much.
Always looks so damn easy when you do it. nice work as always
Nice Work on the Reduction of weight ,you're amazingly relaxed
Thanks for watching!
Did you build that bearing sander? 🤔
I didn't build it to begin with, but I've rebuilt it multiple times
What is the exact size of the bow, 56 or 58 inches? Sorry, it was hard to hear in the video.
@@caseysmith544 yeah I apologize the audio was terrible on that video! It's a 60" bow
@@greatplainsbow I figured that the other machines working from the others in shop was the issue with the sound not you. The microphone was picking up mainly his sound.
👍
Thanks for explaining that limb design. It did look a bit odd when you were handling it at first. Aso nice to see all the work on the carts. Hang in there through the pre-season madness.
Thanks for watching!
I think it's insane how easily you can tweak weight and tiller on a bow. Your definitely a master of your craft. Do you still enjoy shooting as much as you used to? Or does the day in day out bow work take away from it?
I would think he still does enjoy shooting, maybe not his clients stock models of bows but his own personal models or new test models/modified models of company's current models for sure.
Great video and rework tips. What are your thoughts on leaving a trad bow strung when not using it? Longbow or recurve. Thanks
Because of thick core limbs on a longbow. Leaving strung can affect performance and loose draw weight. Only maybe 2 pds. In 20 yrs for recurve. You should shoot strung bows regularly.
Only if you have an all fiberglass/composite limb beginner one piece/2 piece takedown or are using some model with foam core/solid core limbs mainly found in ILF but are on some custom brands one piece where they take these limbs and add them to the bow riser as a one piece model. ILF is another design made so you can leave strung but most do not ever do because of a fear of breaking the limbs. If a bow is too hard to string up, please get a stringer and if you can barely draw back the bow at anchor for a 5 seconds, sorry but you need a lighter bow.
You can leave it strung if it's got glass on it. Never leave a self bow strung. Also if it's strung don't store it in direct sunlight or lean it in a corner.....for that matter don't do that with unstrung bows either
I have a October mountain recurve similar to a samik sage and it has a high wrist grip. Can I rework this grip to more of a mid to low wrist grip? Thanks.
not sure, that seems more like you need to add material maybe even make a bow using as a high grip is higher up so the material would be gone missing from area. There are ways of doing this using the Bow Form a Grip from 3-Rivers Archery.
@@caseysmith544 thanks. I was thinking about just trying to remove some of the hump on the back of the grip that keeps your wrist high and leaving the rest alone so it doesn't affect the brace height but lowers my hand grip down to a more vertical grip instead of horizontal. I don't think the bow has much resale value anyway.
Absolutely. Shouldn't be that difficult
Rodriguez Karen Hall Richard Walker Eric
Perez Timothy Rodriguez Timothy Johnson Larry
That looks like the recurve model's grip and limbs, the pattern is tapered instead of flat and flush like the longbow. Wouldn't it be easier to tune the arrows to bend around the center instead of trying to remanufacture it?
