Based on Jeff's review I bought an X8, mine arrived with a twisted upper limb and limbs so out of tiller that I had to nock a full inch above square to the shelf to shoot a clean hole when I paper tuned it. I have been making selfbows for over 26 years, my bows have won over a dozen national championships so I know what a bow is supposed to do. I sent the bow back. I bought a black hunter longbow and recurve to test; the first longbow came with the limbs so out of alignment the string was 1/2" off the shelf to the left. I sent it back and got a great bow the next time. The Black Hunter recurve was as good a shooting bow as I have ever owned or made.
I bought one of these after watching Jeff Phillips video on it. I’m new to trad shooting and have gotten a bunch of shooting over the last 3 weeks. Bought 6 Gold Tip Warriors at a 400 spine cut to 30” w/50gr inserts the bow shoots darts with 200/250/300gr tips. With 200gr tips my total arrow weight is 537gr and my bow is shooting 45 @ 28”. I REALLY luv your videos and seeing how you rework bows. Your videos a few other trad guys videos are what got me into the traditional field. Wanna shoot a bunch before ordering a custom so I know what I’m gonna want. Once I do a call is surely gonna be made to Great Plains!!!
I was impressed with how quiet that bow was too. Also, the genuine impressions you guys had when the proper arrow came out of the bow. You may get the bow to the published weight with the tillering change. All very insightful changes ahead for that project and it will be interesting to see how it turns out.
Great video guys. I've dabbled in traditional archery for awhile but haven't gotten into it like I've wanted to. Recently I've started to look into getting an ILF Recurve and possibly a one piece Recurve and Sanlida has come up a lot. The Royal X8 and the Hermit X10. Great info guys, Thanks for the review. I also saw that Sanlida has been around for about 20yrs making target bows and all that in Asia. Seems like a decent company.
Shane, take a minute and look at the brand Deerseeker. The Hawk recurve is a 3pc takedown with a faux wood grain laminate under clear glass that looks amazing. After setting the bow up for my wife and shooting it I decided to get one for myself. We now have to of them and they are fantastic. Best bang for you buck. Almost all entry model or low cost bows are black glass limbs. These limbs look like a really nice laminate under clear glass. Take a look and I think it may be one you guys would like to review
I just found you guys on here really appreciate what you doing I've been a traditional bow hunter for most of my adult life I'm 58 years old so that's been quite a while I bought a self bow when I was 17 I have never changed use that bow my entire adult life but I'm getting older and I'm thinking about lighter poundage so I'll be checking you guys out a lot
According to both Amazon and the Sanlida Outdoors website, the reccomended brace height is 7-8", so maybe having it set very high at 8 25" accounted for the +3# of draw weight and the over positive tiller? I'd be interested in the specs and perfomance at 7.5"
I've been searching for a backup bow for my Osage Orange 60" 52lbs at 28 draw I built and currently hunt with. In March I'll be taking another bow making class and hope to knockout a Comanche short bow and a another long bow with a pacific yew bow stave I sourced from a good friend from Idaho.
About to go look at these at 30lbs (I have lower spine issues and my Invicta compound is now up for sale…). I still want to shoot but not waste money on a high end trad bow if in a year’s time I have to give up all together. Really appreciate you guys doing this, it’s more than just helpful, the attention to detail you gave it helps when I go look, especially that glue line crack. And, like everyone else on YT the arrows are where I’ll spend my money…..thanks fellas……oh…and subbed! (Steve in the UK) 🤙
They aren't, but we've got a couple left if ya want. Nik made em. I'll ask him if he wants to sell ya one or give ya one. Thanks so much for watching! It's so inspiring to us to hear it's making someone's archery journey more enjoyable!
I bought a Sanlida Eagle X9 3 piece 58” hunter. The kit included everything the X8 had along with a back quiver for $99 from Amazon. It was a 50# bow and I almost immediately learned to make Flemish strings and got B55 and GT Warrior 500 arrows with 100 grain inserts and 125 points. I cut the included arm guard into 2 separate arm guards (1larger and 1 smaller) and bought a bear paw glove. I’ve only been shooting traditional for 2 months and have complete confidence to hunt with this bow. 125 Stinger broadheads are grouping right with my field points out to 25 yards. I expect to take shots at 20 or less. I would love to hear your thoughts on the X9 and know if it would be worthwhile for a rework. I am DEFINITELY in the Traditional family now.
Please look at the Sanlida Royal X8 Longbow i'd love to see how that performs and how it can be reworked. In particular can the plain grip be improved?
We reviewing these budget bows can you please look at what happens to them when you have a long draw. This can be a challenge for us gorilla's as the budget bows tend to stack pretty quickly. The Black Hunter has this issue when you hit 30" or higher draw.
He's got close to 20 available. You can message him on Facebook. The name of his page is Nik Branstine bows or email me your contact info at greatplainstradtionalbows@gmail.com and I'll have him contact you
@greatplainsbow Thank you very much. I'm definitely going to buy one. Love your channel and bows. Wish my shoulders would still allow me to shoot trad.
I wanted to try a longbow so I got their royal x8 longbow it's a 68" I enjoy it a lot I can just imagine what it's like to shoot a custom one. I'm hoping to be comfortable enough and hunt with it this year if not I still have my Elite lol.
4:25 Meaning the limb tips are still not strong enough, even though there are wood overlays on the limb tips. The answer is that fast-flight strings are not accepted. Only tips that are reinforced with glass, phenolic, bakelite, and other materials are able to withstand low-stretch string materials.
i ordered the 35# version knowing its running a little heavy and also i have like a 30 or 31 inch draw so itll be more like 43 to 45 for me im guessing on the 60 inch bow. also...everyone else talks about how smooth the pull is on this and how it doesnt stack at all at 40 lbs or under.
Serious and valid question for you, What kind of guarantee are you doin with reworkin one of these chinese bows? Just curious to liability if one explodes or breaks on someone and hurts them. I know a few bowyers reworkin and resellin these china bows these days to fill the sales gaps but has anyone thought about repercussions?
Excellent question! Nik is the one reworking and selling them here at GP. I discussed that with him yesterday. He hasn't completely decided which route he's gonna take, but one thought he mentioned is to offer to do the rework for free on a warranty so the customer would just pay the price on Amazon and then he'd do the rework free of charge. How do you feel about that option? What are your thoughts on the warranty of them?
@@greatplainsbow thats awesome you guys are thinkin about that. Just based on my thinking about how things are these days with sue happy people I wondered how that may effect the liability issues. Hello, Say you wanted to reduced this 48# down to lower 40s# .Would focusing on the recurve tip are to reduce the weight reduce the stacking or likely cause a Too weak end section?
@@str8sh2ter that's an excellent question. In theory and probably also in action it would reduce the stacking, but it would make the limb unstable and likely cause a failure. The performance of a bow is determined in the limb profile by the bowyer when the bow is glued up.
