What's it Like Running a Historic Pub?
A bit of a different video! Guest presenter @WC21UKProductionsLtd gives us a tour The Ring O' Bells in Kendall, in the Lake District (sort of), which is on CAMRA's list of historic pub interiors. The video features an interview with the landlord of the Ring O' Bells so we get a behind the scenes look at what it's like to run a* historic pub.
* - I still don't know whether it's meant to be "a historic" or "an historic".

Notting Hill Pubs
Просмотров 7 тыс.14 часов назад
An exploration of the pubs of London's Notting Hill area, which has been requested a few times in the comments, but I was a bit reluctant as I thought the neighbourhood had been completely gastropubbified! It turned out at least a bit better than I expected, with three of the pubs on CAMRA's list of historic pub interiors, with various degrees of noteworthiness, from the slightly surreal "Roboc...
Crouch End Pubs: Hidden Gems in a Lesser Known bit of London
Просмотров 8 тыс.14 дней назад
Another historic pub tour, this time perhaps less well known corner of London: Crouch End, also taking in a bit of Hornsey. There are a surprising number of pubs on CAMRA's list of historic pub interiors in this neck of the woods, no fewer than four on today's itinerary. Along the way I muse over all the different Victorian revival architecture styles, from neo-Jacobean, to "Tudorbethan", to pu...

What is a Pub?

The Speaker used to be my fave pub for post-work drinks. Dennis was indeed a character but of course the main reason for going there (or at least my main reason for going there) was the beautiful Isobel (sp?) who worked behind the bar. I even sent her flowers once for Valentine's.

But the big unanswered question is was the 4 quid a pint celebration of traditional English brewing art any good ? I ask this because I remember going in a hotel pub in Cheadle Hume once upon a time long long ago to ask the manager advice on the location of somewhere, to which the manager then strangely asked would I like a pint of his beer . I really was not looking to consume beer as I was driving and not really interested . But I accepted the offered pint anyway which just happened to be a national award winning specialist bitter that he was very proud of . I Don't know anything about beer but I can tell you this beer was the most incredible stuff that ever touched my lips and I had another. No wonder you get drunks in Cheadle Hume.

Regarding “a historic vs. an historic,” an would be used if the initial h is silent in a given dialect of English. An could be used before historic if the majority decides that it is now acceptable before a voiced h (as in an hat, an hare, etc.). This majority could be of a given dialect, and a “an” would be the norm of those speakers. In practical terms, I wouldn’t use “an” before historic until broadly adopted.

Always lovely to see the old neighborhood. I lived in W11 for years before becoming "Kentish". Anyway, your instincts are right on amongst the pubs you went to. The Cock was one of my favorites from that area but I try not to tell people about it as I don't want it to become the next Pelican. The Elgin was also a decent place to get a drink and some grub. Can't say I ever wandered into the others. Proper pubs are quite hard to find around there, it takes some seeking out. One had to wander a bit and usually blur the lines between Notting Hill and extend out to Bayswater or Holland Park or Kensington. Appreciate the research as always. Cheers!

As a fan of hoisting the occasional pint, (Porters and Stouts preferred, although to be fair, I never met a beer, or cider I didn't like...) this was interesting and quite enjoyable. We here in the Oregon Country cannot boast of any pubs older than the last third of the 19th Century, with those mostly in Salem or Portland, Oregon and even they are scarce as hens' teeth. A big thumbs-up and hearty vote of confidence in the "Host Swapping" theme. (Yes indeed, I followed the directive to view this following the Tweedy featured Londinium Amphitheatre production.) Hi Team, Very clever bit of editing at the very start, to think one of the Tweedy brothers made it all the way up to Kendall for just 5 seconds, true dedication!! Great interview with Tony which gave a slightly different tilt at the pub review and on this basis the infringement of the half pint rule was perfectly understandable. Well done for taking your hat off before you entered the church👏👏, seems a shame that sign is in the church rather than hanging up outside. And to think you were sitting on the bench where the famous Portsmouth writer, Charles Dickens, might have sat. Thanks David! Yes I thought Mr WC21 did a great job, particularly as an interview is something I've never tackled in a video myself - quite a different set of skills from my usual monologues! I should clarify there isn't really a "half pint rule" per se, but I have found from experience that for me personally it's much harder to remain coherent, stick to the script, and remember to get all the necessary footage if I go over 3 pints in the course of the whole outing!

Thanks David and glad you enjoyed this one off variation. As the pubs with historic interiors in the Lakes are scattered over a huge area, I came up with this as a more practical alternative. I found it interesting to find out how a landlord felt about that side of his pub. The Ring O'Bells has picked up quite a bit of publicity in recent years on the ghosts front, so this was quite different for Tony. I think he did a splendid job. I must clarify that I know Tweedy's self-imposed half pint rule is absolutely down to his commitment to presenting historic pubs in a professional manner. I've seen with my own eyes that the rule doesn't apply off duty!

It was a great atmosphere in the beer garden, sipping a pint with the church bells ringing away. Not the same when Ann and Jack Knightingale ran it, no Bar, it was all table service. Jack always alternate the Type of beer glasses, so you knew he always gave you a fresh glass. The public bar was the games room, as in Dominoes. I was told that Ann's father was the longest soldier to receive a medical pension, as he had a half leg blown off in The Crime and War at the age of 13. (Hopefully they may be a an Kendalian who can argue or disagree with this).

Fascinating to hear that, Stephen. Someone else has mentioned them and the table service. We didn't know at the time, that these things would pass, did we?

This episode with guest presenter Mr. WC21 was fun, but also gave some insight into the challenges of making a living as a landlord of a historic pub, in an uneven competition with modernized pubs. It was interesting to get a landlord's perspective. Clearly it takes a lot of idealism to be the landlord of such a remarkable pub, but it doesn't work without an understanding of the business. Cheers to Mr. Leach, Mr. WC21 and Tweedy!

Cheers Kathi - I'm glad that came across. I have nothing but respect for landlord's like Tony. Long may they prosper!
