A Sultry Morning Bike Ride to Tichborne on the K&P Trail
August 1st, 2024
I head out for an early morning bike ride before things heat up too much with the weather. We have been embedded in some very warm, sultry air for the last few days so early morning is the best time to get out for exercise.
I decide to head up the K&P Trail towards Tichborne as I have not been there for a while. Also, I wanted to check out the deer fly conditions before attempting to walk the dogs up here.

Cycling Home From Kingston on the K&P Trail

July 30th. 2024 I get car ferried into Kingston during another city run and I catch the K&P Trail at Sydenham Road just south of Hwy. 401. It's a beautiful, warm, calm and clear morning so I am keen to ride this stretch again which I have not ridden in some time. It's supposed to get up into the high 30's (C) today with humidex values so I don't want to dilly dally too much on the way back. Ine...

July 23rd, 2024 I need some exercise so I take a short afternoon ride through the local countryside. It's warm and humid with scattered small storms passing all around. While I do get rained on at one point prior to starting this video, for the most part, the ride is pleasant, calm and mostly sunny. Bicycle - Surly Long Haul Trucker

July 10th, 2024 The extra-tropical remnants of Hurricane Beryl are expected to track right over our area of southeastern Ontario. July 9th, 2024 The remains of Hurricane Beryl are approaching southern Ontario so, to beat the rain, I take the dogs for a walk on the K&P and Cataraqui Trails, south from Petworth Road. A very attractive, and rustic trail. Peak summer, for sure. Thank you! Too bad, you and the dogs can't enjoy it on foot. According to a couple articles on line, there is a study that says deer flies are attracted to the colour 'bright blue'. Perhaps a bright blue hat or helmet. With a temporary sticky material spray like Tangle foot, applied to its upper surface. To act like fly paper, trapping the flies, as an article suggests. You can then wash off the spray, and trapped flies, when you get home. It would reduce the number of flies that circle your face and head. Otherwise, the deer flies should lessen by September. Really enjoyed this video, thank you! Much cooler weather in a couple days. Pat

Thanks Pat. Yeah, I’ve heard of the attraction to blue as well but I can’t necessarily say I’ve confirmed that in my own use, but maybe. I’m not really that concerned about myself so much as I am with their impacts on the dogs. I don’t really like the idea of catching dozens of flies on sticky tape and then having that stuck to my head as I go along with them, squirming up there. I believe in live and let live as much as I can and no doubt there will always be some that get swatted out of desperation, but That’s about as far as I’m typically taking it other than dressing for the occasion if I know I’m going into fly areas.😊

Yes, the delivery charge would be high for a dump truck from a nursery in Kingston, out of the city on Highway 38. For me, it was only three kilometres from Bank Street and Johnston Road, to the townhome. If you consider it, perhaps you can share the cost and rocks, with a neighbour? Though the delivery might be pricey. Hopefully negotiable. The rock load was beautiful. All the rocks were round, and mixed with some large more angular rocks from another delivery, truly lent the impression of a dried riverbed. Took a weekend of hauling the rocks into position via wheelbarrow. But well worth it!

A few years ago, I bought a dump truck load of rounded river rocks from a nursery here in Ottawa, to decorate a friend's townhome. Thanks Pat! We’ve got the garden in pretty good shape right now although certainly it could have been better planned out as far as spacing and location of crops. But it’s fine the way it is.

@@hervedelnorte7928 Beautiful work! I like that you made your garden a very manageable size, yet it will yield lots of produce. For the past 15 minutes, we have had a very heavy rain downpour in downtown Ottawa. Plenty of rain this spring and summer!

@@seanmitchell4382 No rain here tonight. We’re often in the rain shadow of Lake Ontario (when it comes to convective development). Inflowing southern lake breezes and rising topography carry storm development further inland up towards Hwy 7 and we get only clear or partly cloudy skies.

Excellent video! Impressive, that all the foliage is so green, and robust. It has been a great spring and summer, for growth. I love that nice breeze you enjoyed, earlier in the day. Healthy rainfall, for sure. We definitely got, less rain than you. Take care, hope you are doing much better! Pat

Happy Canada Day Todd! What a pleasant surprise, to see this video, from earlier this month. Isn't Google Earth, and Google Maps, wonderful for exploring in advance! Interesting road, in great condition. Too bad, it ended as a private road. Great, that you took the time to investigate it. Now, you know. Thank you for sharing it! Fun to watch. Pat

@@hervedelnorte7928 I hope you have found time to rest, and take it easy. And you are feeling better. I do hope the humidity clearing out in the past two days made you feel much better. It was pretty quiet for much of Canada Day, here in downtown Ottawa. I think many people were just happy to have the day off to relax. Apparently, there were ten car accidents in Lanark County last Wednesday. That must be a new record. Usually, local drivers in Lanark are polite and relaxed. I figured it must have been Ottawa drivers rushing to their cottages. 🙂

Or identify. I like this alvar landscape. This video is such a great treat to enjoy before the long weekend. Thank you, and happy Canada Day weekend! Pat

Thanks Pat! This video portrays a little more of what I typically do during these hikes even though I may not always capture those things in my videos, usually due to time. So it's nice to show some of the critters I'm often looking for along the way. Happy you enjoyed it. Happy Canada Day to you as well and have great long weekend. Unfortunately, we've all got COVID I think so dealing with a rough respiratory infection right now (headaches, constant coughs and phlegm etc.). Lot's of fun. 😩

There was a time when a warm day was a warm day. Not a "heat dome event" . Such a crock.

    • @hervedelnorte7928
      @hervedelnorte7928 Месяц назад

“Heat Dome” is a meteorological description of an event where hot air is compressed closer to the earths surface by a high pressure area. Typically these stalled high pressure areas hold hot air in place for numerous days and relates to the older term “heat wave” whereas “dome” better describes the actual physical structure of the event. Not all warm or hot days in the summer relate to a “heat dome or heat wave” arrangement.
