A old saxophone player here, I never marched DCI. 95 was a great year. I always blasted my DCI CD’s in my car. I always loved Phantom 93-96. That was a great show!

Just want to point out, when I marched 75 and 76 even then (with DCI) there was no pre show inspection by the judges EXCEPT American Legion state and national shows. Ugh we spent a long time cleaning up our uniforms and equipment so and stand there in the hot sun motionless as the old American Legion judges -slowly- walked by. Ugh.

Your titles for the sections of the show aren’t accurate. I marched this show and those titles were never used. Curious where you got those. Also, that set that you called “Home” was actually a schoolhouse. The part right after that depicted the schoolhouse playground. Thanks for reviewing this show.

I'm so glad I have found your series. I have always loved 1995 Phantom. I liked the way the show was broken up into different tunes. I want more videos from you. The personal aspects from you are very appreciated coming from a marching band kid who didn't get to march DCI. FYI, it would have been Garfield!!!!

Was lucky enough to march Sky Ryders in 1987. This Vanguard show blew our socks off every single time we watched it. They were bone-rattling good. If memory serves, I think most people thought SCV would win first place that year. The Cadets were incredible that year, too. Glad we have the videos, but you're right, it is definitely not the same experience. Thanks for posting this, it was fun to watch!

It should be noted that music in this era was POWERFUL, in part because they played pieces that were faithful to the original (though often shortened) - and NOT avant-guard nonsense full of meaningless sixteenth-note runs and senseless double-tonging just to get recognition from judges. It's not that they lacked the talent. They respected the power of the music.

They has a second girl appear out of the box as well. When they go to the view from the endzone you can see they pulled the covering back down and they go to a different angle at the hit when the second girl appears. I personally never saw it but I was sitting at finals with a lot of people who marched this show, including one of the girls that appeared. When she said one of them, I wass like, what are you talking about and them they told me the story.

Absolute classic show from Santa Clara! I liked many shows that year, but it was very clear that the championship was going to be between Garfield and SCV. Both shows were the bomb!!! Very different but very effective and the crowd loved them. I was at Finals that night in Madison. I had Garfield winning, but I would have had no issue with SCV winning. If there ever was a year for a tie...1987 was the year.

One of my all time favorite shows! 1987 was my rookie year in drum corps, marching in the Bridgemen. At finals, I had purchased one of those $2 backfield tickets that corps members were given access to and i was able to sneak around front and found a spot up top on the 50 yard line just in time for SCV's performance. If you think it was awesome on video, it was even more so live! BTW, just out of curiosity why this show and not 1989 Phantom for the 1980's?

This was pretty much My Era in D&B and marching, I'd actually started marching in what amounted to another of the Many little Northern New Jersey parade corps., that existed there in the late 70s & early 80s about 2 years before this year in 1976, and although having grown up hearing and watching corps., from all over America, once I started marching myself, I started taking more notice of various corps., and their styles, now at that time, Bayonne Bridgemen were on of Mt faves., mostly because they were from my home state, and they were Fun, and Different, but 2-7! was a 2nd fave., then and then a plethora of other faves, among which became Phantom, and now since my top 2 corps., have disappeared Phantom, Boston, and Carolina Crown are my 3 main faves. Now. I Love hearing Phantom's Elsa's, Boston's Conquest, and Crown won me over back in 2007, with their Triple Crown show when they played Bayonne's William Tell Overture & basically I feel paid tribute to Bayonne by bringing out their, "Silly," and essentially recreating a full-on horse race right there out on the field, and that's one of the things I Miss about Bridgemen was they helped D & B to be fun for me, and reminded us that there Should be a sense of humor involved there too.

As someone who marched Cadets 2007 and 2009, I got to understand this show in depth but it was mainly thanks to the DVDs, which used to contain designer commentary from the staff. Before I go further, I should respond to your mention of electronics. DCI legalized amplification in 2004 but not electronics until 2009. So the sounds you hear in the pit were from various objects to generate the amplified sounds. So in regards to the show.... To know what it's all about, start with the title "The Zone: Dreamscapes in Four Parts with a Door." What does that tell us? The show is loosely based on the Twilight Zone, and there are 4 parts to the show, which revolve around the door. You then hear the narration which is nearly identical to the intro of The Twilight Zone. And the girl you see is the one we follow along in the story. When she goes through the first time, she is in a world of water as we can tell from her outfit. This is also an original work composed by Jay Bocook called "Liquid." The drill is also flowing with formations like the waterspout, waterfall, the faucet, umbrella, fish, plus the water drops coming down and being collected. The 2nd and 3rd movements are directly from the movie "Dancer in the Dark," and you can see how the girl is in a more dreamy, imaginary world. Now you know how the guard flags have something like a chess board on them? Well the girl goes to the chess board (drumline on side 1), and she discovers her ability to control the pieces (snares) and move them around, one by one, and then push them back as a full section. The drill even features a chess ♟️ around the door. Going into the 3rd movement, this section is inspired by the factory scene in the movie I mentioned earlier. If you watch it, you'll get why the girl was making those noises because that was in the movie. The drum speak had gone through MANY changes, but I know all of this had been composed by the actual members themselves. Now the 4th section, in my view, seems to bring together all the other 3 parts, as you can see with all 4 girls. This final movement is another original by Jay Bocook called False Mirrors, and it features more aggressive and abstract formations as the girl finds her way back to the door. I remember hearing Sully mention about the attempt to redefine contemporary drum corps in 2005 and 2006. Looking back at those shows, I remember the controversy they stirred back then. I think Cadets challenged the way everyone thought about what drum corps should look and sound like, more than any other corps. Side note... It would be fascinating to see what the 2025 version of The Zone would have sounded and looked like, if Cadets had still been around. Could you imagine?

Thank you for such an in-depth episode and for the amount of positive comments about the corps. I was drum major in 86-88, and it was a life-changing experience to be around the team that created the shows, the members who brought them to life, and the behind-the-scenes admin and volunteers that got us down the road. Everyone cherishes their corps memories, but we thought we had something particularly special in the middle of Kansas. Great podcast! Best wishes.

It was very ahead of its time and yes, it was disturbing. When the guard are “stick figures”, it’s relating what bad had started in the home with the Mother pulling her hair out to the Father whipping her with a belt. Then the school yard bullies trying to take her ball away, which teaches her she must fight for what is hers including her Country when she has to lead the charge when they are at war. During the war scenes, the color guard had faces torn as if their dead in uniform. Wonderful rifle work during that session. And of course, no matter how old you get, you still have traumatic memories of your childhood. It was such a unique show, especially at the end, that the audience didn’t know what they had just witnessed or how to react to it. The guard used to be the Winter Guard “Odyssey” from the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. Karl Lowe took them to win championships at WGI. Such a creative mind! He probably don’t know how big his fan base is, even though he is in the WGI Hall of Fame. (I taught guard at the High School he attended and I was afraid he was going to see my work, so I did extra work on that show!)
