Mastering Split Steps Timing
A lot of pickleball players ignore the importance of footwork, in particular split steps, because it's boring and it's too hard. In this video, I perform a frame by frame break down of how top pros do split step, specifically focussing on mastering the timing of the split step to help players better understand how to time the split steps correctly.

    Another great break down and analysis on the body dynamics. Since it's hard to find the right timing and that window gets compressed even more when moving close to the net, some people would just do "over-sampling" startup/split steps at kitchen line - keep your feet bouncing all the time, that's an option too and would burn out your stamina fast.

    • @superdupr.pickleball

      Thank you sharing Dennis, yes great point it gets harder as you get close to the net, yes people like James Ignatowich over sample to make it easier at the expensive of their stamina.

    One of the BEST videos I’ve seen for several reasons. He edits it to show exactly what he is explaining, and is very clear with his words. So many potentially good videos do not clearly show what they are talking about. Also, I didn’t notice any times when his words could be confusing, or ambiguous. I notice a lot of people use what I call “coach speak” leaving out important details, saying things that can be misunderstood, and using silly lingo. PLEASE MAKE MORE VIDEOS!!!

    Thanks for great video! For non-tennis background people, this instruction is like a jewel. But I wonder, whether a very small shallow hop which only jumps a millimeter level would be fine and functional as a split step or not. For a non-athletic guy with knee and foot injury history, I cannot fully hop like half an inch or an inch to bring the split step for every single shot. I mean, I could try to hop for every shot like you did around 9:00 of this video, but that will makes my legs tired too fast, my knees and soles will be burned and toasted...

    • @superdupr.pickleball
      @superdupr.pickleball 11 дней назад

      Thank you for the great question. You brought up a good point, for people who have injuries, it might be hard to do a full on hip. I personally think doing a more subtle hop works just as well, if you look at Ben Johns his split is very subtle, we are talking millimeters. I do a very exaggerated jump right now because I’m still trying to train on my timing and also getting into a habit of always doing it, so the exaggerated jump helps with that, but if subtle jump is waist for you I think that works just as well.

    Great breakdown. Here are some other suggestions: 1) explain how tightly to grip the paddle for each hand. This is not easy to do correctly, since we are concentrating so hard during the learning process and have a tendency to grip too tightly with one or both hands. 2) maybe explain the grip position. While I’m learning this, I use my non dominant hand to turn the paddle slightly so that can hit it with a more eastern backhand grip. This obviously helps to generate more topspin. Thanks for taking the time to explain a bit how to pronounce his name. I appreciate the nod to respecting his heritage. However, he also now pronounces his own name in a more anglicized way, so I think it’s actually ok to pronounce it like he does, or even call him Q. :)

    Do you think the guys are taking more thirds as a way of keeping them back so they are less likely to poach the fifth?

    • @superdupr.pickleball
      @superdupr.pickleball Месяц назад

      That’s one strategy that I heard some pros talked about before, I.e keeping the guy back so he is less of a threat, for example less poaching. I do think it’s a double edged sword in that if the guy is up at the kitchen, yes he has more reach and mobility, it opens up more opportunities for poaching, but the guy can only be so aggressive with his positioning before he becomes easily punishable (hit behind him). Keeping the girl back has the advantage of allowing the team at the kitchen break the girl’s defense more easily (less mobility and reach) than having the guy at the back. It’s a trade off between much many more poaches can the guy successfully do instead of the girl vs how much easier it is to break the girl’s defense instead of the guy’s defense at the back. Also how quickly can the girl/guy move up to the kitchen from the back if they do hit a very good drop. This is just my opinion. What do you think?

    This video is basically the same as tennis. At 3.0-4.0 you want to master the ground strokes and placement with good forehands and backhands. Drops, resets and dinking are higher level for pickle and so is net play in tennis. You need to build your foundation before you move up to higher level tactics. At higher level tennis, footwork, consistency, technique and strategy is important. So is with pickleball. I will tell you to play consistent, don’t try to win the ball with one stroke, be patient, have good defense and overall use good techniques.

      you know it's interesting, because right now I'm trying to experiment with different techniques to help me become more alert and ready at the kitchen. my problem before was that I was not moving enough, so far I've found using the ignatowich bounce (over moving) seems to force me to be more ready (less lazy). i'm also trying the normal split step that most people do, the challenge that I have with this is that getting the exact timing is more difficult, perhaps I just need more practice. Everyone has their own definition, for me personally anything within the first 3 shots, also anything that should be a shot with minimal pressure. The absolute definition is less relevant as long as you maintain a consistent standard of judging the errors.
