DIY Motorcycle Hitch Lift - Overland Truck

I’ve been wanting to create a way to take my dual sport with me when I take the Overland rig on trips. I didn’t wanna hassle with ramps because of the height, and I also wanted to keep my approach angle reasonable. So I came up with this lift that holds the motorcycle by the frame, so your suspension is never compressed, and lifts it over, 30 inches up From the base. It gives me more clearance ...

I’m not a fan of your instructor. He needs to be a bit more patient.
Honestly, he did get a bit more patient. But more importantly, he made me a better pilot by being harsh. It wasn’t easy but it worked for me :)
Not a fan of this instructor
You should be, he is excellent! I've flown with many 'nice' instructors and this guy was hands down the best.
Nate did you purchase ur helicycle prebuilt?
I did. I also spent months going through every inch of it to make sure it was exactly how I wanted it before I flew it.
Thats your first time flying a helicopter?
Hi - how did you attach the bolts for the platform the jack pushes down so it can pass over the square tubing that goes into the hitch?
Just a washer to space the bolt heads out.
How long did you make your 3/8 in arms? From hole to hole
From memory, about 18"
very nice Nate!
Thank you!
Nate, where did you source your 10.9 flange bolts and flange nuts? I'm adding a drop hitch receiving plate to my M1083A1, but with the extra half-inch, the old bolts aren't long enough. I'm having a heck of a time finding some new bolts to buy.
I got them locally at American Materials in So Cal. I could go grab some and mail them to you if you need? Let me know!
I already know, but why didn't you just say what the aircraft was? Instead, you told us what it *wasn't.* Beautiful area, but too many houses there.
Reminds me of the Grumman Traveler/Cheetah in which I flew most of my FW hours. Fine aircraft. Wrote an article for FLYING about my super cross-country from LA to Montreal and back in 22U. She looked a lot like yours!
I currently have a Cheetah, they are amazing aircraft! I think the Cheetah is the perfect XC machine for the cost. I learned that learning to fly in something that requires more precision than a Cessna really helped me along as I progressed in my flying. Thanks for the comment, I'll have to lookup your article and have a good read!
@@NateVolk I can cut & paste it here if you're OK with a long comment and if FB allows it.

Greetings, it appears you have a large piece of rubber between the box and the chassis frame (4:08) What you share what type of material this is?
Yep, just 3/4 rubber strip by 3" wide. McMaster Carr
How did you get insurance for this?
Just went to a broker and bought a policy.
If you can't make it out of wood, you don't need it!
Yep, its cheap, strong and easy!
Looking good brother. Love this build and can’t wait to it completed.
Thanks!
Could I get the length of the 2 square tubing pieces and the length of the four arm pieces? Thanks. Looks great. I'm going to build one.
Just build to suit your specific needs. Figure out the rise you want and cut the tube, then clamp them together and measure the distance and drill holes.
did i hear him say he has never flown a helicopter before? ok....
THIS helicopter...
what thickness did you end up with for the 4 arms?
I ended up using 3/8, which was fine. I'd go bigger if I did it again though. Once it is up, it almost doesn't matter though...
Did you get it finished? I’m looking to do something similar on this overland build I am starting and would love to see how it came together
Yeah, sort of. I ended up with a bottle jack as the scissor wouldn't lift the bike. Then my hold down bolts for the pegs were too short... I had my last summer trip coming up, so I just ended up taking a trailer for that trip. I'd change a few things if I were to do it again as the bottle jack was larger than the scissor jack by far...
todays the day i die....i bought a cheap homebuilt ultralite gyrocoptor...and i have literally no experience......RIP
That's awesome! Get some training and you'll be having fun for a long time!
Awesome
Thanks! So much fun
Where do you buy these and how much?
You can buy them as a kit from the manufacturer, or a flying one like this for $60k
I don't think I would tolerate an instructor like that
Turned out to be a great instructor.
Looking great!
Thanks!
Hey , buddy, what new camera 🎥 did you get? It’s super Wide.
Yo! Long time no see buddy! It’s the Insta360 x3 (Costco has them). Just trying something new, not 100% sure if it’s perfect yet though :) I’ll keep you posted!
Looking good Nate Thanks for the update.
Thanks Marc! Your project is looking good too!
Did you get this finished? A very interesting idea and I’m wondering how it worked out
Mostly finished. The bolts I made to hold the pegs down were a little short. I ended up taking a trailer on my last trip so I could haul a jet ski as well. The lift tests fine, but haven’t driven it really off-road yet…
It’s about time dude 😂 Interior is really coming together.
Thanks, it’s coming along little by little!
Lot more courage than me.
We all start somewhere!
Hey man I have the same truck and have been looking to do the same thing where did you get that
found it locally on craigslist. Best $500 I spent on the whole rig!
Oh Boy, that final approach brought back a lot of memories the way it danced around....Woo
Yeah hahaha! The gusty crosswinds don't help either :)
Hey Nate, what's the spec of the inverter you're using and your battery banks?
It’s a 3500 watt growatt all in one unit. Charges via solar, generator, and plug. Splits load between solar and battery. Battery is a single 200amp hour lithium 24v. Runs the fridge, cooktop, and light a/c for about 2-3 nights/days with no charging.
I know I'm a little late but hopefully you are still checking this. I'm doing something very similar but I'm nervous that as soon as I take mine off road the box will snap when the frame articulates. Did you take this into consideration? If so what did you do to counter that. As my mounting points are about the exact same as yours.
Hi! Yes, I built about 7 inches of travel into each mounting point. There are simple springs that compress when the frame flexes. I’ve had it in some pretty hairy situations, and nothing has gone wrong. I did build the box extra stiff, I can lift it up from one corner, and nothing flexes on the box itself.
Do you have a video showing the mounts with springs attached? I was thinking on mine I would just mount the front with some really beefy mount and then on the back I would get truck airbag shocks. As the rear is basically all that flexes.
The middle is actually where you see the most flex, not the rear... Check out how dump truck mounts are made, fixed rear and floating front. For me it was just as easy to make matching captured spring mounts along the sides and both corners. Works great and I can also level the habitat separate while parked. If you fix one end, you are stuck with how level your parking spot is :) Check out the later videos in the series to get a look at the springs mounted.@@longspeakmoto
@NateVolk do you have a specific video that you think best shows them? My box is pretty stiff made of fiberglass with steal beams and a steal floor but I would rather not be on some nasty road to find out it wasn't as strong as I needed.

Warning…long winded question coming. So I’ve been looking at this as a “commuter option” to work. I live 3 hours by car from where I work. I rent a place and stay the 5 days and then drive back…and leave the night before I’ve got to be back at work the next day. All the research I’ve done is the flight in this would be about 45 minutes each direction. Would this platform be a decent alternative to allow me to sleep at home? I can land at home and I will figure out where to land near “the office”. Basically I’d fly 5 days a week from the west coast of Florida to the east coast and back 5 days a week.
Great question! This heli is setup to cruise about 100 mph and you can carry 2 hours of fuel, so 45 minutes each way is close but doable from that perspective. The only real issue is cargo room as there isn’t much. It’s a much better way to get to work than driving!
@@NateVolk so my plan was to buy a Cherokee Six and rebuild it with a glass panel. Which I still want to do. BUT this seems like an other option with a different mission… but a faster way to get to the office and not have to rent a place to stay. Take that money and buy this…and still buy the Six for the long missions. At about $100 an hour to fly I’ll actually save money in the long run. I don’t need cargo space. I need time. My biggest question is maintenance. More research required.
@@curtisaitken7027sounds like a good fit for you then!
This student did a super amazing job for his second flight, but I think he should fire his instructor.
Nah. That instructor is awesome!
So cool!
Thanks! Super fun :)
Do you have a dimensional drawing on that I’ve been wanting to build one
Unfortunately I don’t. It’s a little cobbled together actually and I’d change a few things next iteration. Build one out of cardboard or cheap material first!
ASIDE FR THE AUTOMOTIVE FUEL PUMP.......THAT THING SOUNDS. JUST LIKE A BELL JET RANGER....LIKE A 212....PRETTY KILLER.....ACTUALLY
Thanks! The turbine is amazing! It’s a little different as it has a directly connected shaft, but other than that it operates the same.
Hi nate I was just watching one of your videos great by the way. I was just wondering why don't helis or do any of these kind of small experimental heli's have some kind of roll cage if you will.
Thanks for watching! They sort of do have cages built in, it’s through the landing gear and frame behind the seat. Adding more would add too much weight. The crumple zone is designed below the seat, so in training you learn to keep the heli level and flat as much as possible so if you do land hard, you don’t roll and the gear absorbs the impact.
Talked to the new owner yesterday as he was driving to your location! He's stoked and is getting a great helicopter. I imagine Juan will be excited to know his prized Helicycle is making its way to another coast! You're going to miss it! 7-07
I miss it already!
How much did you sell her for? ballpark it if necessary...
Good examples like this usually sell between 60-70k. Hope that helps!
Thanks @LincRYAN !!!
Awesome 👏 editing skills dude ❤🎉😊 awesome 👏 video
Thank you so much 😁
‘Taxi for takeoff’
Sometimes I taxi for fuel too :)
You chose a more difficult aircraft to learn on, dude! Way more fun, though. Nice job.
Way more fun, and really set me up to be successful in bigger aircraft too!
Hi can you specify what is the name for your helicopter? Who built it? How much it cost you? How much you pay to storage at the airport? How much fuel is its capacity and how much you spend for a regular fly like the one on the video? And the total price for the helicopter including shipping? And who’s the manufacturer or their web-site? Thank You 🙏
Sure, it's called a Helicycle and it comes in a kit that you build yourself or buy one used. One like this costs about $80k used. Airport storage varies by location. It holds 25 gallons of jet-a and that gets you almost two hours of flight time that costs about $100...
Sensacional
Thank you :)
Esse mosquito é muito bom, parabéns a vocês
Thank you!
I enjoyed your video... I see it's from 3 years ago so my comments might seem a little late or a little out of place. I was surprised that for your first flight you headed out on a long flight. If this was the first time flying this aircraft I would assume you would take off, do some flying above taxiways or possibly a circuit at an airport and then land and then physically check all the mechanicals. I imagine I would land and check things over then possibly go out for another circuit. I'm guessing maybe you bought the helicopter from someone who had already built up hours going through careful flights and tests. In any case I'm interested in hearing the story from before and after this flight. Cheers!
Well, both. The helicopter was well built, and I had a very good mechanic go over everything with me before I flew it. He actually hovered it and did a few circuits before I hopped in. I had 6 hours training, so I let him do the ops flight. This video was my first flight in it. Make sense?
man awesome video and kudos for the hard work. but this is like reinventing the wheel. i achieved the same results 3 years ago without touching one screw of the maxxfan.
That's pretty cool and I'm always open to seeing how things can be better! Care to share some details?
@@NateVolk hi, thanks for the response. by no means I was underestimating your knowhow. the other way is to intercept the maxxfan RF codes and retransmit them via a universal remote from within HA. you would need an RF transmitter and receiver. there is plenty out there. Logitech or broadlink
@@makaveli7771 totally understand. That’s a great idea, I just wanted to buy the cheap fan as a start. Intercepting the rf is genius!
