Adhesive on those windows may not cope well under numerous cycles of pressure changes whereas o-rings are more predictable due to their uniformity.
Merry Christmas Hank!! Thank you for all the awesome videos!! Very inspiring!
Thank you and Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas Hank. If that interior doesn't have the ability to switch to red light, then you built it wrong. So cool watching this come to life.
Thanks, I will be sure to do that lol
Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas.
Very cool to hear the engine run. Merry Christmas!
Thanks, and Merry Christmas.
Awesome to hear it going , whats going on what that shut off ? I didn't really understand the issue
Merry Christmas, the shut off is temporary for this test, it ended up being awkward. First item to fix on the list.
I ran my sailboat engine yesterday.
Nice to hear
Wowza! Really quite awesome to see. Thanks for sharing your work!
Thanks and Merry Christmas
good stuff
Thanks, and Merry Christmas
It's always nice to hear a project start up for the first time. (If it does. 😂)
Thanks, it is a treat to hear. Merry Christmas
Making good progress Hank.
Thank you and Merry Christmas
Good progress! Keep it up!
Thank you, I am really enjoying this project!
Hey, what is the diameter of your hull? 😁
The hull is 48 inches OD, so its pretty roomy for a personal submarine.
Hi Hank. I just had a thought. Maybe for the monitoring of the cooling water you could make a flow meter like what's on a welding gas bottle. Merry Christmas!
I will have to look into that, I like the idea.
How many cameras hard wired cameras do you plan to use?
I have not got that far yet, but probably 2 cameras.
@@HankPronk Nice! The more the merrier... Unless they find fishing line. Anyway, keep up the AWESOMESAUCE!!!!
Merry Christmas!!!
Same to you!
Best advise. make sure you Life Insurance and Will, is up to date
Yes like a lot of hobbies it is dangerous. I guess I could sit on the couch like you and play video games. Pass the controller lol.
Btw, if you intend to repair or debug your constructions, connected to the engine, then consider adding quick connect fittings to your pipes. Some threshold between engine compartment and cabin could be good too. The idea is to reduce spilling of oil, coolant and other liquids, because cleaning stinky mess inside closed space can be very difficult task. Plz check, whether you have enough space for exchange of oil, filters, coolant and whatsoever.
All fluids can be drained into containers to avoid spills. I hate a dirty bilge.
@@HankPronkThanks. I meant that if you need to disconnect something from engine, nothing will leak on the floor.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Thank you Merry Christmas
It's pretty amazing watching you build this! You never rest! Good on ya, man!
Thanks
Mr. Hank, why didn't you choose to install a fuel cell if concerned about leaks? Or an internal bladder fuel tank like an old Corvette?
I want the tank to fit the hull so it takes up less space. I like the bladder idea but pretty costly.
Concerning fuel gauge, use some ready mechanic float with potentiometer or capacity sensor. Take some car or tractor parts. Plz never ever ultrasonic. They fail in complicated conditions. I had bad experience in corrosive damp atmosphere.
I ordered a simple float system.
@@HankPronkThat's right.
You can add just ordinary pressure gauge for oil pressure. Idk about diesel but everything higher than 1 bar is ok for gas engines.
It turns out my oil pressure sending unit is just for an idiot light. I will probably just go strait mechanical.
@@HankPronklots of cars have just on-off contact sensors. Some ancient cars from 70ies had sort ot real sensors using bimetallic plate.
Your ancestors probably are Dutch, it's a common last name in Duindorp and Scheveningen, near The Hague. Warm greetings from The Netherlands! Merry Christmas and a happy New Year!
Yes, my parents immigrated here from Sneek in the late 50’s. Thank you
ChatGPT is super cool, just be aware that it lies one out of five times. It will even double and triple down when you catch it lying.
Thanks, I have noticed that, but for math questions its pretty good.
It's amazing what you can do with computers these days. I'm guessing that in the old days, you had to destructively test it in a pressure chamber.
Yes, very true
Wouldn't it get pretty warm in there sitting next to the radiator? Anyway, your channel is one of my favorites.
Thank you. The radiator has cold lake water flowing through it to act as a cooler for the compartment. There is also going to be an insulated wall separating the engine compartment.
@@HankPronk I was unsure about how marine radiators work. I assumed they worked like automotive ones.
@@HankPronkBtw one can try using small part of engine cooling liquid for cabin heating. Idk how it is in case of big size subs but imagine sitting nearly motionless at 10C in damp air. Kinda cold. Still an open question.
@@ІгорАлієв I do plan to use engine heat to heat the cabin. It does get chilly and it is not comfortable. I want to be able to use the sub in the winter.
@@HankPronkthat will be fine!
this guy answered like 900 questions i had when designing my rov. been working on this for months and re watched videos many times. thanks hank
Thank you it’s my pleasure
what does your compensator look like?
When you machine the fuel filler plug, you might consider how attach a tether so the filler plug can't accidentally get lost. A small diameter stainless braided cable with an eye (or ring terminal) from the plug to the hull should be more than sufficient.
Yes, that is a very good idea.
What goes down doesn’t have to come up. Yikes
@ what is your point?
U didn’t change thE seal
So the gist I got from this is three words: *Redundancy, Redundancy, Redundancy*
Better sound today, LOL
Yes, I have to speak up
What com system are you using ?
Coming along great! Can't wait to see the sea trials!
Thanks, I am able to work on it full time again, so its going good.
Might try using a D/A orbital sander with the appropriate buffing pads, in the spinning lathe chuck, to polish the windows.
The spinning seems to do the trick, and its really fast.
To prevent vandalism you could make a sort of steel bucket that drops over the tower covering the hatch and the windows which you can padlock down to the hull with some boxes over the padlocks to stop them being cut…
That is actually close to what I am planning. I am thinking about a ring that raises to cover the windows from the sun.
awesome! so cool to see this sub coming together. do you anneal the viewports after machining? or is it such a small change that it probably doesn't matter much
The literature says to anneal after machining due to heat build up. I dont bother because I do such a slow small cut, that there is no heat built up.
Nice work!
Thanks
Really coming together and taking shape.. You must be getting excited. Looks phenomenal 👌
Thank you, the goal it to have it in a test pool late spring.
Two steps forward, one step back. Good luck!
Thanks, thats how it goes sometimes.
PSI is a measure of (water) pressure alone. The force it produces on the rod is a multiple of the pressure and the area of the penetaration. This will be in pounds, not PSI.
That is correct.
Boys have boats. Real men have submarines. 😜
A bit of steam punk feel to it now with the new rudder handle which is awesome.
I kinda like that too.
I am also a fan of reasonable length service loops on wiring. For me, it is always a compromise between having enough wire to work with, and too much of a rat's nest of extra wiring. Having enough space (I.e., not using the absolute smallest possible enclosure) makes life much easier. The tiller lever looks nice.
Good point, the trick is to have tidy runs to each switch with a loop in the main harness. The older we get the less contorted we can manage. As long as I can get to the sub in my wheelchair, I can fix and dive it . Thanks, I am pleased with the final result.
I think these 3 points are at least part of why things are so hard to work on. 1.) They don't want you working on it. 2.) They aren't going to work on it. And the most important; 3.) That extra 6 -10" of wire X 1 million units is substantial money.
Well said
WHOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Finished with one part! 99 more to go!
Yes at least 99 more jobs 😃
So at 100ft, that steering rod going out through a through hull may be experiencing 50psi water pressure (depending on diameter) in addition to the load on the rudder. Better work on your bench presses.
It will easy to move . Same sealing principle as hydraulic valves and you can move those very easily with thousands of psi leaning on them. Also a well balanced rudder creates very little resistance .
The rudder is offset on the shaft, resulting in less load. Also, I am strong like bull lol
The PSI does not depend on the diameter
@@charlessturdivant3179 the diameter of the rudder rod through the through hull will determine the pressure at depth on the internal rudder mechanism in addition to any pressure from the rudder.
@@alanjames2333 you are right of course, but I do have a greased thrust bearing. Also it is moot because the rudder is not used at depth, only at the surface.
Seems like this setup is a lot simpler, too. Sometimes the simplest solution IS the best one
It is, much better, and I like how comfortable it is.
A mountain bike grip should work. They even have groved ones for each finger that would probably be really comfortable for your application.
Great idea
