Bob, have watched a number of your episodes, jumping around a bit, and am so impressed with this project! I’m in RI and have a 75 Chris Craft 30TF which I have been working on for several years. Didn’t need to do the deep dive you did but gutted the cockpit and repowered, new bulkhead, enlarged fuel tank, steering upgrade, new electrical etc. I just watched ep. 59. I installed Yanmars and am really happy I did. Power and fuel use is game changer. Spendy though. Love this project and can’t wait to watch you finish the boat over the next years.
I appreciate the comment. I am in Connecticut. I would love to hear more about your repower experience and the work you have done. If you care to share more details please email me at renovationsportfish@gmail.com. I think it would be very helpful for me and the project. Cheers - Bob
Very nice Bob! Nice work takes time. You never showed how you determined the rudders position running perfectly parallel to the keel?
Thanks. The tillers are keyed to the rudder shafts and the tie rod is the same length so the rudders relationship to each other is the same as it was from the factory. I also did a visual rudder check after I made my cross measuring. I guess I forgot to mention that part. Good catch. - Bob
Looking great! Happy holidays! When you mentioned teak towards the end of the video, are you putting a teak deck down on the cockpit floor?
I plan to try and reclaim the original teak deck. Plane it down pretty thin to use as a veneer. Will see how that goes. Thanks for watching and commenting. - Bob
Thanks for the clarification! Amazing work as always.
Thanks James. Glad to be able to clarify. - Bob
Great job, Bob! It’s always something, isn’t it?
Thanks Joe, You got hat right. - Bob
Hi Bob, Love the Hydraulic Cylinder setup. Hard to tell for sure from the video but it seems that extra 1/2 inch offset on the tab made a huge difference for clearance. Don't want the tie rod and cylinder banging together if the going gets a bit rough. I like the setup with the cylinder more centered much better than offset to the port side tiller, far more elegant solution. Hope you all stay well, and I look forward to some Springtime videos. 11 degrees F is a bit nippy for me too. Best Wishes, Jerry
You are right Jerry. The suggested offset was really close. Same cold days this week too. Camera wasn't loving it yesterday either. Thought I wasn't going to get a video out for a while but I'm close to finishing what I'm currently working on so it probably won't be spring before the next video. See how this week goes. Can't wait for the spring weather though. Hope you are doing well. - Bob
Glad to see you back at it . Happy New Year!!!
Good too be back. Happy New Year. - Bob
Really nice fabrication! Have you thought about adding auto pilot? You’ll need a couple more brackets for the drive motor. Happy New Years and hopefully good health and many more days working on the boat.
Thanks. Maybe down the road I would consider auto pilot if I find myself wanting to do long passages but for now it's not something I think I need. Like you said I could always modify the support to incorporate one. Happy New Year & thanks for the comment. - Bob
Another engine question…. : ) Are you rebuilding the old engines? Or starting from scratch?
Old engines were scrapped. To far gone. My hope is something new. - Bob
You did a beautiful job on this In stall.
Thanks Chris. It was a challenge, but I am happy with the results. Thanks for watching and commenting. - Bob
Hi Bob, Happy new year from Ireland 👍 all the best! That is another great and Clean looking Job Bob 👍 greetings from Jeroen 👍
Happy New Year Jeroen! Always enjoy hearing from Ireland. Hope all is well. - Bob.
All the best for 2025. Hope you have a great year. Great work as always. Keep well and stay safe.
Hope you have a great year too. Thanks for watching and commenting. - Bob
Not sure of any implications, but I would research benefits of a Teflon (or similar) washer between bronze rest-plate and collar. There’s going to be a lot of metal-on-metal movement right there. Love your channel and glad you’re recovering and posting again.
Thanks for the suggestion Matthew. I was going to start with a little grease and see how it does after a season. If I'm seeing excessive wear the teflon will be something to try. Appreciate your watching and commenting. - Bob
I love the quality of your work, and the thought you put into it. Great stuff
Thanks, I appreciate your comments. - Bob
HNY Bob outstanding work as always. Glad to see you looking well after a trying time. Looking forward to the next update. BTW are you going to paint the inside under the decking where you are working now
Thanks, I will be painting the transom, stringers, bilge etc.. I don't think I'm going to paint the undersides of the actual cockpit deck. It's all epoxied. I have to draw the line somewhere. Thanks for watching and commenting - Bob
The cleanliness and precision of your work is so fun to watch. I'd watch your channel every day if it was available. Happy New Year!
Thanks Randy. I wish I was progressing quickly enough to put out a weekly video for you guys, like most other RUclipsrs , but that is unfortunately not the case. Not with a full-time job. Anyway, thanks for the comment and watching. - Bob
🎉 awesome! Great to see the release of this video! Thanks Bob. I fabricated and installed a hydraulic steering system last year on my project so I can relate.
Thanks for watching it and commenting. Feel free to share any issues or tips you may have learned from your steering system install. I still have all of the hydraulics to install. Thanks - Bob
Happy New Year Bob, That's a very elegant solution you came up with for the steering its nicely contained and very uncluttered looking. I was watching you working in there under the portable spotlights and I thought about the IP67 LED tape that are available which would give you lots of available light at the rudder components and in the engine bay for future maintenance and cleaning (once she is splashed) and take up no space if mounted in several places along the side of the beams or underneath the sole itself. Anyways stay safe and I'll see you on the next video
Happy New Year! It is so much better working in a well lit area. I'm liking the current lighting but being temporary I need to find that permanent solution. Your suggestion is definitely worth looking into. Thanks for sharing! You may see me sooner than I expected if the progress continues as it has been on my current project. We will see. - Cheers Bob
Great to see this! Keep up the good work really look forward to your videos
Thanks. I will keep at the work and videos. Thanks for watching and commenting. -Bob
Bob, I am late to the party and have just seen this channel and project. Wow! I have skipped ahead and around and you are blowing my mind on the ingenuity and skill at solving and fixing all the problems. And they seem to never stop. I have a 75 Chris Craft tournament sportfish to which I have done an extensive but way less complete reno compared to this effort. Am wildly impressed. I saw the boat was from Providence. Are you in New England? I’m in RI. Cannot wait to get through all the videos. Thanks!!
Thanks for watching and commenting. All of the transom lettering is original from the first owner. We bought it from the second owner in Mattapoisett MA. who only owned it for a year. I'm in Connecticut. Glad you are enjoying the videos. I like the Chris Crafts. - Bob
Yes, this video is old and I don't know why I'm commenting but I had a 1975/6 30' with the Fiberglas bridge. Same one they used on the 33'. Loved the teak cockpit but I had to replace the port side rear bulkhead that shared the rear wall of the head. The bulkhead had white Formica facing the head. Out it all went replaced with a huge piece of 3/4" marine ply that I faced with pretty nice looking teak Formica and of course the white head Formica. I teak faced the starboard bulkhead to match. It looked nice until it was a victim of arson fire at the marina during winter storage. Insurance sold it as salvage to Canada.
Sorry. Sounds like a sad ending to a beloved boat. The only formica I have left is the tabletop. Probably keep that if possible. They used that stuff everywhere. Inside and out. Thanks for sharing the story. - Bob
The cross section of the fiberglass is the strength i think. Like a hockey stick
Thanks for watching and commenting.
gret video
Thanks . I appreciate that. - Bob
Hi Bob (and Mrs Bob), Thanks for the new video. That rudder setup will be many times stronger than the original, and much better protected with all the glass. Looks Great!! Hope everyone is well and continue to feel better and better. We continue with follow-ups at Georgetown Hosp, but everything is going well. Best Wishes, Jerry.
Hi Jerry, Good to hear things are going well. We are all well here. I finished the supports this week and I'm happy with the way they turned out. On to the next challenge. Hydraulic Cylinder mounting bracket and the dreaded welder. Wish me luck. Enjoy the Holidays. - Bob
I've restored 3 boats in the past and am currently restoring a 1968 Hatteras 34. But I always find something of value in your videos Bob. For example- screwing the rudder washer to a piece of wood to safely sand it flat. My dumbass would roll the dice and try to hold it without losing too much of my fingertips lol. Keep it going!
I envisioned myself doing that and thought I might be able to find a safer way. Hope the Hatteras is coming along well. As always thanks for the comment and watching. - Bob
Bob, put the arm for the cylinder under the tie bar arms, then you can mount the bracket to the rudder support.
I will explore that option before I decide on the final location. Thanks for watching and the suggestion. - Bob
Hi Bob, I think you had way too much fun filming that intro (be honest now 😂😂) Im still marvelling at how smooth and clean your bilge floor is and the new supports just seem to emphasise the smoothness of everything. And the rudder components, jeez what a transformation you made there too Lots of hard work and its easy to see it, thanks for sharing see you next time, be safe
It was fun. After the first attempt. I tripped on the tripod after the first 50 shots and had to start over. A beer and a deep breath helped the focus. I was quite pleased with the way the components cleaned up. I finished the supports this week and I'm liking the results. Cylinder support next. Looking forward to sharing in the next video. Happy Holidays. - Bob
@@renovationsportfish1563 Absolutely, a beer and a deep breath solves most things (usually its cos your heart rate is getting back down to normal 😂😂)
Good video! And glad to see you back.
I appreciate that. Thanks. - Bob
Nicely done!
Thanks Rob. - Bob
Hey Bob! Really good to see you again. I always enjoy seeing your meticulous work.I also hope your health is doing well. One question: I know you’ll have zincs on the rudders, but any concern for you on having SS carriage bolts on bronze rudder post housings?
I am doing well thanks. I will be installing bronze hardware when I do the final installation. The steel hardware I was using was just for the mock up. The old bronze bolts were in terrible condition and I also wanted to verify the bolt length I need before I order the new expensive bronze bolts. Thanks for watching and commenting. - Bob
Nice work, as usual! Good to see you back on the project with fresh enthusiasm. She sure is pretty. Happy holidays.
Thanks Joe. Change in projects helps spark the enthusiasm. Have Happy Holidays. - Bob
Fantastic work as always. Keep well and stay safe.
Thanks. You too. - Bob
Nice clean work! Keep em coming summer is on the way :).
Summer seemed far away the other day when I had my space heater on in the boat to keep my toes warm. :(. Plenty to do over the winter though. Mostly in the shop. Thanks for watching and commenting. - Bob
Hi there, thanks for the update on this wonderful restoration. Your workmanship is top class. Its nice to see you looking well after the trials and tribulations you have been through
Thankfully things went well and I'm able to get back to what I enjoy doing. Thanks for watching and commenting. - Bob
Great to see you back, more quality work on display, thanks for sharing
Glad to be back. Thanks for watching and commenting. - Bob
perfect work, as always
Thanks Ronald. - Bob
Nice work Bob 👍
Thanks I appreciate that. - Bob
One question-is the hull bottom cored? Hard to tell from the video. If it is, do you have to seal the now exposed core before the final installation to prevent water intrusion? Really enjoy your videos and admire the work you are doing!
Hi James, No the hull has no core material. However the areas where the rudder ports are located have 3/4" marine plywood backing material fiberglassed over on the inside. I guess that could be considered cored. Yes I did seal it with penetrating epoxy. I failed to cover this in the video. I will address in the next video as others will probably have the same question. Thanks for bringing this up. Thanks for watching and the good comment. - Bob
Cool stop time. : ). Are your engines ready to go?
I follow another RUclipsr who does a lot of that stop time. Thought I would give it a try. Steep learning curve. Tripped over the tripod after the first 50 shots on the first attempt. Engines? Hmm. No, Not yet. - Bob
Glad to see your craftsmanship always.
I appreciate it, I'm trying to make this boat the best it can be. - Bob
Hi, I enjoy the content and your meticulous attention to detail. Question, maybe you said , but i didnt hear, I think you cant mix dissimilar metals, those bolts should be bronze. or you need to put something in between, maybe a compound if your intention is to leave those bolts there. Best of luck and happy holidays.
You are correct. They are just temporary bolts for mock up. I will be ordering and installing bronze hardware when I do the final installation. Happy Holidays to you as well. Thanks for watching and keeping me on my toes. - Bob
I will not grow tired of your meticulous, ingenuity. This boat repair is of Rolls Royce quality. See you on the next video.
Rolls Royce. Love it. If I could only jamb a couple of their marine engines in the boat. Wow. Thanks for watching and the comment. - Bob
Another great video. High quality work. Thanks for the video.
Thank you for the nice comment Jim. Thanks for watching - Bob

Your craftsmanship is really impressive, your eye for detail makes your work first class. Great Lake boater from Wisconsin, good luck with your labor of love!
I appreciate that Russell. Thanks for watching and commenting. I hope the Great Lakes are treating you well. - Bob
Wow, it looks impressive. Hopefully you can get the geometry figured out and can get it all installed. Will you be adding an auto pilot controller?
Thanks. More concerning for me at the moment is my welding skills. I need more practice before I start building brackets. I better get to it. Have not thought about an auto pilot. Maybe once I put some miles on the boat I will consider it. - Bob
As usual, beautiful workmanship on the rudder support brackets. As I have stated in the past, that boat is going to be far superior than the day it came out of the factory!! Cheers from Austin, TX
Thanks Tom, Doing my best to make my vision for the boat a reality. I appreciate your comments. Hope all is well in Austin - Bob
Great to see ya up and about! They make thrust bearings for such an application to prevent that galling.
It's good to be making some progress. Thanks for the watching and the tip. - Bob
Nice work
Thanks I appreciate that. - Bob
