  • In this episode I do some final repairs on the interior side of the transom and install a layer of fiberglass over them. I also give an update on the port side settee installation. I tabbed it into the hull and varnished the face frame. This video is part of a continuing series documenting the full Renovation of a Classic 1973 Egg Harbor Sportfish boat by working nights and weekends.

Bob!! A HOBBY?? Never. A JOURNEY! A MISSION! A QUEST!! Maybe, but never a hobby. And I feel so lucky to have taken this voyage with you, if only as a passenger. Welcome back and it's great to see the work you've accomplished over the Summer. Thanks for posting the new episode and I look forward to all future ones. Jerry

Hi Jerry, I will admit that I had a moment of feeling down about the progress made over the summer when I shot that opening. Your take sounds much better and exciting. I won't say the "H" word again. The Journey continues my friend even if we hit some rough seas along the way. Take care. See you soon. - Bob

I had the opportunity to buy a 39 ft Sea Ray Express Cruiser for $2,900. The hull was in great shape but pretty much everything else is a do- over, including engine rebuilds. After watching your videos and several other channels, I realize now what a huge project it is and decided that it's more project than I have years left in my life. So, I passed on it, for now. Maybe, once I retire, I'll look at a project this size. But, for now, I don't think I have it in me to dedicate the time, money, and attention that you and other youtubers put into these projects. Thank you for the insight and please keep these videos coming. Thank you!

I had no clue that this boat was going to turn into such a long term project for me when we purchased it. The years are ticking by and I have the same types of thoughts that you are expressing. My to do list never gets shorter. It's perpetual. One day this summer I worked hard on the boat in the heat. I got what I wanted to do that day completed and was tired but felt a sense of accomplishment. Instead of going straight home, as usual, I went to the local liquor store, got some cold beer, and went back to the marina to watch the sun set. I sat down on one of the lounge chairs overlooking the river below. I was the only one in that spot, the river was like glass. The sun set was beautiful. As I sat on the lounge chair enjoying that earned beer I could here people on the docks enjoying some music (the Carpenters) and plenty of laughter. That's when I was reminded that this wasn't a bad gig I had going on here. Perpetual may not be that bad. Thanks for the comment.- Bob

Glad to see you back with another great video Bob,
I hope you had a good (relaxing) summer and I'm looking forwards to seeing the rest of your plans as they evolve from thought to reality

Thanks Scott. The summer wasn't as relaxing as I would have liked. A lot of boat and non boat related projects to get done and It was hot. I will make a good effort to edit out any of my complaining about the heat in my videos. A change in my plan part way through the summer is resulting in some additional work and of course will set me back a bit but the boat will be better for it in the end. You will find out what I'm talking about in the upcoming episodes. Thanks for watching and commenting. - Bob

@@renovationsportfish1563 Bob if you feel like venting on the vids about the heat then that's fine because its who you are and its who we expect to see rather than some very PC robot (like some are 😉)
Although as a Scotsman I have no idea what you mean by heat 🤣🤣🤣🤣

I was just thinking that we hadn't seen anything from you in a while. Great to see you posting again!
Oddly, though, RUclips didn't notify me that you had uploaded this (subscribed & bell notification on).
Looking forward to seeing what progress you've made, and changes/alterations of your liking.

Hi Neil, Yes I'm back for now. I have my summer progress to create some more episodes. The fall and winter might be a little video lean as I think I will be working on small boat projects that might not be episode worthy. We will see and I will let everyone know what to expect. Appreciate the comment and your interest in the project. - Bob

Love the perseverance here, it’s all coming together. Can you advise what your thinking re the engines. I’m an avid follower, great to see you back.

Hi Liam, I am thinking brand new engines. I'm looking into the Mercury V6 270hp diesels or gas GM based V8s. I really just started and have to contact manufacturers directly to get more information on both engines for pricing, sizing & technical help. I have just been doing internet searches so far and found the basic dimensions for each to start with. This should let me know (mostly for the diesels) if they will even fit. Height is my main concern with the diesels. With the overall amount of work I still need to do before the engines it is easy for me to keep putting this part of the project off. Thanks for your comment as it reminds me that I need to put more thought and action into this decision. Winter here is a good time for research. Good excuse to stay out of the frozen boat environment too. - Bob

Do you have any videos on the topside finish? I have to do some repairs on my 73 30 egg. My understanding is the top is marine plywood + Brightside poly hatteras off-white.

Hi Justin. Episode 21 is an oldie of when I painted the deck. In Episode 71 I painted the cockpit transom boards. There are a few others as well. I used the same paint for all of the topside. I didn't try to match anything that was there. It had probably been repainted over the years so the original color is a mystery to me. You are probably closer with the Hatteras off-white than what I used which was oyster white. I'm not great with the color spectrum in the eyes but oyster white looks a little more yellow than the hull color on my boat. Single layer of 3/8" plywood on the flybridge deck. Two layers on the main deck. I thought I just saw an "exterior grade" stamp on the flybridge plywood underside when I removed the headliner. The deck surfaces had a thin layer of fiberglass on them. The main deck fiberglass extended under the toe rail. The flybridge deck fiberglass ended at the wood trim surrounding the cabin sides. All vertical surfaces were painted wood (plywood or solid mahogany). Thanks for watching and the comment. - Bob
