The British Railroader
Великобритания
Добавлен 23 окт 2011
Welcome to my channel, devoted to all things train related.
The main focus of the channel is the building of my current layout, Brooklyn Park - an HO scale shelf layout set in a fictionalised part of Brooklyn, New York, depicting the operations of the real life short line, The New York and Atlantic Railway with guest appearences by the Class 1 CSX.
However, I also like to go out and about and share my train rides, travels and time spent train-spotting with everyone through live action videos covering everything from the local railways of my home town to far flung systems around the world.
Add to this my 'shows you how' videos, model railway show reports, product spotlights and other miscellaneous railway related content, I hope that I have something for everyone.
Feel free to subscribe, hit that bell for notifications, click 'like' if you enjoy a video and post comments if you have any questions or if there is anything you want to share, I try to answer them all.
Cheers - Steve

Thanks for the Advert Steve, Appriciated
Say hello to Dan, Barry and Martin of Royston Club who are exhibiting Geeksville, a UP layout at Shoeburyness show. Barry is the 3D printing man who has done a lot of trash cans etc for our layout.
@@andyknott8148 I saw that layout was coming. I am very much h looking forward to seeing
Excellent Steve from Virginia USA
Thank you. Hope it helped
Having built a small N GAUGE Inglenook layout (3' x 6") for an exhibtion I found that my class 08 shunter was forever stalling on the unifrog turnouts. Having watched your video I had that eureka moment. Bought three Gaugemaster frog juicers and now all I have to do is fit them. Simples!! Well I hope so!!!! Thanks for the tutorial.
@@chrissharp5073 no problem. Frog juicers do really help with the electrical continuity.
a lovely wholesome video Steve! My memories are of the Woolworths Night Mail set they did with Hornby and still invokes those memories now, and although the loco has been upgraded to a Bachmann version, the coaches have been toached up, painted a bit and weathered and still invokes that memory now!
@EmperorsPath glad you enjoyed it my friend. It has done exactly what I had hoped it would
Next year! 😃
@@csxrensville5105 I know, I can't wait!
I hope you enjoy the show, Steve. It's a little bit too far for us, but hopefully, you'll get some footage to share... Cheers James 🙂👍
@@DYLINGTONMODELRAILWAY will do
Simple pleasures. My first train set was the Triang Freight master set. A Class 31, although I didn't know that at the time, two container flats and a working overhead crane. My Dad put it on a board for me. Plated with it for hours! 😃
@csxrensville5105 it is the simple things in life that sometimes give the greatest pleasure. Obviously why my wife married me 🤣
Steve.......if you send me your address I'll send you a frame to put your wedding photo on the shelf in lol. But I do like your forward thinking in that the dining room walls are already painted sky blue 😂
@@Castlebank_Sidings don't mate, I have already gotten grief from the Mrs about not tidying up 😅
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
For Christmas one year in the very early 1960s my father built me a 4'x8' Lionel layout complete with postwar rolling stock and locomotives, Plasticville buildings, a passing siding and one industry siding. Ran the wheels off those trains as my father was building a larger HO scale layout from a Model Railroader plan right next to mine. The Lionel set was replaced by HO scale racing cars and by now most of it has been sold off. But I do have my two favorite boxcars from my Dad's original 1962 Athearn HO scale set on my current in-progress switching layout. Thanks for igniting the memories.
@billwilcox1060 no worries mate. Glad you enjoyed it 👍
Well, that was a surprisingly enjoyable video, Steve. In fact, believe it or not, that's probably a similar size to Dylington, and we always just play trains ... Cheers James 🙂👍
@DYLINGTONMODELRAILWAY cheers James. I am glad you enjoyed it. I have a question for you, does Dylan have an ice cream van on Dylington? Where I live we have a famous ice cream company called Rossis (yes related to the guy from Status Quo) and I would love to send him one
@thebritishrailroader Hi Steve, no, he doesn't have one on Dylington 😁👍
@@DYLINGTONMODELRAILWAY send me your address via thebritishrailroader@gmail.com and we will sort that out
@thebritishrailroader ok Steve, I will, thank you 🙂👍
It's nice to just run trains at times, isn't it? After ordering it three years ago, Atlas is finally shipping it's new RS-1 in LIRR livery.
@DaveSCHS cool mate. I have one of the older ones but I bet the new ones are nice. Thanks for the comment 👍
@@thebritishrailroader, I have been looking for a LIRR S-1 but haven't found any. I think they came out about 10 years ago.
@davidsteckler8551 I have an RS1, the really old version with moulded grab irons. We seem to get S1s come up on Ebay over here quite regularly but never in LIRR livery
I still have my original Hornby train set, one of the early two rail, I think it was Christmas 1962. The loco still runs but tends to waddle along. It gave me a passion for the hobby early on, and I started buying my own locos and stuff in my teens, after we moved to the US (1963-1973). Had a Tyco (red box) NYC GP20. Tyco made good detailed models then, before they got bought out by some toy company. The GP20 still runs, and can pull an awesome number of freight cars. a bit noisy, but I think it always was. Now back in the hobby after several decades hiatus. Still modelling NYC but now also NYOW and CP.
@clivewilkinson6076 oh wow that is fantastic. I should have kept a few bits from back then. I do still have one of my first American HO locos, a Bachmann F40ph, that I bought in around 1989
Interesting video, and thanks for the shoutout. To me there is no greater compliment to a prototype model railroader than to see a scene and say “I know where that is.”
@awblenko not a problem and thanks for the photos
Nicely explained, Steve, and I think that you know which area Dylington falls into 😁 ... Cheers James 🙂👍
@@DYLINGTONMODELRAILWAY oh I think we do 😅. Cheers mate
Great video, Steve. Prototype modelling may be the easiest to explain, but in my opinion, it is the HARDEST to model. I model closer to prototype because my railroads, my operations and my locations all follow the prototype. But I found it much easier to not try and match every structure (key street overpass and a few key structures notwithstanding). But I'd consider myself a proto freelancer based on this. I think there is a lot of gray area in between. It will be a debate here in the states for years to come.
@joelupinacci011073 thanks mate. It is never cut and dried and you could argue that even prototype modellers are in fact proto freelancers where they have to make compromises etc. A really interesting topic to discuss. Thanks again for your thoughts 👍
So basically, Recall is like the memory setting for radio stations on your car's sound system 👍
@@Rocketed12 it is just like that. It will recall the last few locos you have used

@@thebritishrailroader yes he has, I hope you enjoy it 😁👍
Looking good Steve!!! My first job during and after high school was at Hollywood Auto Repair at 1028 Utica Ave, Brooklyn NY if you need a name for the shop. Secondly paint the windows on the Chevy to represent brown masking paper and paint the body to show some off color body work over the main color. This will give you a car being prepped for painting.
@EmpireBeltRR cheers mate. What a great idea for the care 👍
Good tip thanks! I think the R/C Powercab is a five amp system. Not sure which system you were demonstrating as i could not see it.
@andrewblake2254 it is the smaller Powercab so has a max of 2 amps but I believe it Functions the same way as the Procab etc
@@thebritishrailroader yes it does, very much the same.
Steve, I like it! I think your idea of graduating the building height from lower to higher as you move away from the grade crossing was a good choice. Unfortunately, there is no direct city bus that runs from Brooklyn to LaGuardia airport. You need to take a subway to Queens, and then transfer to the bus (usually, the M60).
Thanks Dave, it does seem to work. Sadly you never can find the right bus for the area. I will just turn a blind eye to the destination for now
Your very good at finding all these detail parts. The mechanics post lift must be broken if he's lying down underneath it. 😃
Thanks. I never thought about that 🤣
Very nice Steve! Love the GMC RTS bus. Iconic Replicas does a nice job. I’m guessing that is the diner from City Classics?
It is indeed my friend. Glad you enjoyed the update
The garage is a nice little scene. The 3d printed car looks ideal for having a tarpaulin thrown over it. You could probably flatten the tyres with a bit of gentle heat, and maybe have the engine exposed. Use the bonnet to block the gap in your fence!
That's a great idea. Cheers Jim
Garage looks brilliant. As a bit of a car geek, especially American cars (my Dad had a Mustang, a Barracuda and a Torino), what is the car in the garage? Also that 1950s yellow car beside the mini - a Chevy I'm guessing? I've collected a handful of 50s/60s cars for my upcoming layout build.
Cheers mate. The taxi is one of Oxford Diecasts HO models
Hi Steve, nice update. You've got some nice details on that auto repair shop scene, it's looking good. Dylan is wondering if the diner will be selling Dylington Custard 😂....Cheers James 🙂👍
Absolutely, it will be exclusively Dylington custard 🤣
@thebritishrailroader excellent news Steve, will it be piped directly into the cafe from the factory 🏭 😀 or will you be wanting it delivered in barrels 😁👍
@@DYLINGTONMODELRAILWAY tankers 😁
@thebritishrailroader and why not we do move it around in tankers? Hopefully, they'll have the name on 😂👍

Thanks mate, I am very proud of it
@@thebritishrailroader You’re very, very welcome!🚂🚂🚂🚂🚞🚞🚞🚞🚂🚋🚋🚋
How much canadian stuff do they have ( I live in montreal canada where the caboose was built)
Only the caboose and the speeder. Also some smaller artifacts such as posters, helmets etc, but that is about it. However, for a small heritage railway, it's a lot of stuff.
@@thebritishrailroader understandable!
Excellent I recall these units from when I lived in New York were they functioned like locomotives on the system. Isn't there a connection between the subway and heavy rail around Glendale in Queens? I have a faint memory of something like that from my railfaning days there. Fresh Pond Junction area? Really glad I found your channel.
Thanks for the lovely feedback and I am glad you enjoyed the video. There are some places where the subway joins the LIRR as they deliver new cars via the car floats at Bay Ridge (I think). Hope you enjoy the channel
By the way, congratulations, you are my 900th subscriber. No prize I am afraid but welcome to the channel
@@thebritishrailroader cool!
A nice bit of progress Steve - that school should look great once you've worked out how you're going to do it!

That's a nice addition to your fleet, Steve. When Dylan sees it, I'm sure he'll say it's in the Dylington Custard Company's colours. He already thinks you should have a Dylington Custard Company billboard sign on your layout 😂 ... Cheers James 🙂👍
I will have to look into that 🤣
@thebritishrailroader have a look at the billboard on Dylington. It's made by the Scale Model Scenery based on our custard nonsense 😁👍

Hi Steve, I'm finally catching up with videos after a busy weekend with Dylan. The fencing is looking great, and you've done well finally getting the kit to build your school ... Cheers James 🙂👍
Cheers. I have spoken to my mate Sam who is co-host and producer of the Model Rail Replacement Podcast and asked if he could give Dylan a shout out (they do a RUclips shout out at the end of each episode). He said he would take a look at the channel. I tell you, your grandson has some talent. At that age I was lucky to build a Superquick kit without getting glue everywhere!
@thebritishrailroader thank you for that Steve, it's really appreciated. Well, I've only been modelling for about five years when I got press ganged into building a model railway for Dylan and have since become hooked on it. So I'm still learning, which means I definitely couldn't have assembled a Superquick or Metcalfe kit ... Cheers James 🙂👍
Nice score Steve!!!
Cheers mate, I am very pleased with it
Usually they have a flat car or two in between the cars
Thanks for the info. I will try and find some photos and see if I can find something suitable 👍
Looks great, Steve! That "bell" is actually a buzzer, used by the conductor to communicate with the motorman, and vice versa. One long buzzer signal passed to the train operator means to stop or do not move the train. One long buzzer signal passed to the conductor means do not open the doors, do not close the doors, or reopen the doors. Two long buzzer signals to the train operator means to proceed. This is used at terminals, after any emergency brake application, and after the conductor has signaled the train operator to stop. Two long buzzer signals to the conductor means to proceed with door operations and pass indication, when all is clear. Two short buzzer signals passed by either the train operator or the conductor is an acknowledgement of any message. NOTE: The conductor must never pass buzzer signals with the side doors open, unless the emergency brake valve is open. There were a few other signals but they were rarely used.
Cheers Dave, thanks for the explanation
Dear TBR, beautiful how you did the sidewalks out of hardboard, such a simple way to accomplish this level of street detail! Cool to hear you were invited to the NMRA meet, definitely will consider joining up! Cheerio
Thank you so much for the kind comment
Great tip on the older kit options. Often Walthers Kits are rebranded KIRBI and Faller kits. I have the Walther's Rivoli Theatre and the plastic walls are stamped KIRBI
Cheers Dan. It wasn't until I looked into it that I realised it was exactly the same kit. The newer one branded as the post office sells over here for around £66 but the older Ford building was £44! The stupid thing is, they actually have a post office sign in the box 😅
Your curb and sidewalk look great! Love the storm sewer grate at the edge of the street too. Details… 😀

The urban look is definitely coming on. I see Enzo is still outside his store. I think the term for a garage is auto shop. Course, I could be wrong. I very often am.
