Portugal from Scratch
Португалия
Добавлен 4 фев 2021
Hi! I'm Kirsty and I'm from Canada but left in 2001 to travel and never found my way back there to live permanently. I've since lived and travelled in a bunch of places and now I found myself in Portugal where I bought a half acre of land with with ruin on it in September 2020. In my other life I make maps of Africa capital cities and so I expect I'll be travelling between the two continents at least once a year as I try to balance work and life here in Portugal... it's a hell of a commute but I love it!
My plan is to renovate the ruin using natural materials, build a few other natural buildings, and set up a small food forest and garden using permaculture principles and this channel is my attempt at documenting the process of setting up an off grid life here. I don't really know what I'm doing and I'm learning as I go, so if this sounds interesting, please follow along and join in the fun as I figure things out along the way!

THE ROOF IS CRAP! CAN WE GET THIS SHED TO WORK? - Building in Portugal
The shed for Sinead's solar system on her off grid homestead is going vertical but we encounter a few problems along the way. Hopefully nothing we can't solve and it's fun to puzzle through challenges with a friend and we're both really enjoying the building process.
Plus we head on a wonderful walk around a lake in search of mushrooms and get loads of tips on foraging from our friends Bex and El. We even feel brave enough to cook some!
I hope you like this video, I think it’s a good one! Thanks for watching!

What a great shed. Could you post a link where it's from? Thanks!
She bought it at Bricomarche in the shop in Fundao.
Keep on keeepin on
😀
Thanks for sharing. Just a note, if you squash rockwool too much it no longer insulates. The air pockets between the fibers are the insulating part of rockwool.
Ah that’s a good point!
Take care with the mushrooms, please.
Progress 😊. When I read the title of your video, I was expecting leaks or pieces blowing off in a windstorm. The roof isn’t robust but you have a plan! Onwards! ( was going to add ‘ho’ but thought that could be misinterpreted!😂)
🍄 Sinead, 'gifting' mushrooms! 🍄🤣 Personally, I would use metal corrugated sheets on the shed roof. I think they'd give better protection, plus you could fit them to give a good over-hang all around. Lovely shed though.😎 Nice to see the banter between everyone. 'Girl's just wanna have fun!' 😃
Ya it was a fun walk! She's got a roof solution and I'm about to go help her with it now. 🙂
Blue ets and the charcoal burner mushrooms looked delicious . .The Chestnut Festival soup, chestnuts, sandwiches, all the bose and traditional music all were free, to enjoy. Portugal is simply the Best !!!!!!!!! Glad you both have nearly completed the important new utilities shed .
It all really was delicious and the walk and work were fun. It was a great week!
Have you ever seen the rechargeable handwarmers that are available? I take them camping w me and they make all the difference for my hands. Might be nice to have one in your pocket on those cold mornings. Cute lil building!
Ah I’ve heard about these! Good idea!
What is the temperature Kirsty. 😅 Maybe you girls are just acclimatized to the 40 degree heat
Haha I think so! It’s not even that cold but it’s the first cold!
I love this girls club. Building, stonework, Mushroom harvesting hunting/learning, olive harvesting, planting, growing, parades, music, scenic, food (some of anyway haha), fun stuff!! ❤
Wine drinking! Haha ya... it's fun!
@@PortugalfromScratch yeah I was going to toss that in there! Good for inflammation from all the hard work! 🍷 🍷
FYI: The flat roofing material should be put on from lowest pitch to highest. I couldn’t tell if that’s how you installed it. Otherwise it’s cute.
I'm not sure what she did but she's putting a better roof on now, I'm about to head down to help. 🙂
That shed look so cute.❤
I hope so!
Maybe some silicone to seal along the metal edge??
I had that thought as well because if water did manage to sneak in there it wouldn’t get out.
Will you be putting vents in for circulation? Love how they have so many festivals to go to.
Ooh I’m not sure but I think she should consider that!
The stain looked like clay mud when it first went on, but turned into a lovely warm golden hue. Deceptive that stuff! Well done again. That roof is dodgy! But I know you two will find and interesting solution. Hugs from 🇨🇦
I agree! I wasn’t sold on the colour at first but it turned out beautifully!
That looks like a great little building. I wonder how they can make a decent building and not provide an adequate roof? It's weird, I say. Can you get plexi glass or or something corrugated for not an arm and a leg? Hmmm🙂👍👍🇨🇦
Ya and it wasn’t cheap! She spent another €100 on roof stuff and the metal.
@PortugalfromScratch at least the building will be fairly secure. It seems sheltered enough to not blow away in a storm.
Thanks Kirsty and Sinead, for another great vlog.. ‘cracking on’ could be your community motto…. Along with ‘ get some coffee in your face’ ( which I still want to see on a t-shirt 😊). Love everything you share with us. Thanks as ever 🙏🏽
Haha! I’m glad you enjoy these little phrases!
I love both of your senses of humor!
Thanks!
My recipe for cooking mushrooms is fry in butter, salt and pepper, add cream and Dijon mustard. The Dijon and cream just give it another level of enjoyment. Love your videos. Thanks.
Ooh sounds amazing!
Same with broccolini. 😃
you two work well together. love the video
We do! 😀
The mushroom picking was fun, dry humor and fairy talk the best. Was that soup with collard greens and chestnuts? Looked delish as well as the mushrooms. The shed reminds me off Lincoln Logs. Pretty cool. Have a great weekend!!! 💙
Ya it was a great day out! I didn’t have any soup but I think it was cal verde… I don’t think it had chestnuts in it.
It is not looking not too bad at all. Staining the wood was a very good decision. For the roof you have to make sure that the rough gravel layer from the roofing material is facing upwards, that gravel layer is to protect the roofing material against UV radiation and such. And besides nailing the roof you could also use some dots of silicone kit or the bison rubber seal in order to glue the roofing material, but you still have to use some nails. In general those nails are not very long, and they should have a wide flat head so that you can't accidentally nail them all the way through the roofing material, but also so that the wind can't pull the roofing material from the roof. I still recommend to use some kit or the bison rubber seal between the aluminium angle profile and the wood so that water can't get in. The rubber seal can also be used for the roof at areas where the roofing material is not entirely covering the OSB wood, and to cover the seams. And it is easy to apply with a paint brush. I already used the rubber seal for my own repairs that I had to do, and I was pleasantly surprised how easy it was to use, and how strong it feels now that it has fully cured. To my opinion the rubber seal is stronger and more durable than silicone kit. But all together it is getting there. Well done ladies 👍
👍👏🌟🍀💐
😁
I smiled through the whole video. Such fun, mushrooming, and a fun building project.
Glad to hear that, thanks!
Teamwork is dreamwork, ladies!!
Definitely! 😀
Hi your both doing a fab job but wow yep that roof is crappy. Nothing like the roof on the irish homestead building just similar wall build 😂 Rain rain go away come back another.... Actually please don't come back for a couple of weeks 😂😂😂 Take care from a very cold UK (weather forecast says snow for Monday 😭😭 my wheelchair does not like snow 😂).
Brrrr! Snow already! 🥶 She sorted out a much better roof but ya, for that price you’d expect something a bit more decent!
You girls did a great job. Looking forward to seeing it completely finished. ❤
She’s almost done, I’ll share it in my next video. 🙂
recently started following your channel, van i ask a question about the yurt! did you have to notify anyone, or is it classed as a tent, temporary building.. looking to do similar in future and just trying to find out as much info as i can before diving in, if ya get me, love what your doing and keep it up.. a great way to paint lots fast is use a pump up weed killer dispenser.. make sure clean out afterwards
toughen up, that region is infamous for it's cold. protect the fruit trees from frost. life with pneumonia may be fun, but fruit trees dead isn't. stay dry, stay strong. 🤠😎
Ya I’ll need to get stuff to wrap a few of my trees over the winter. It hasn’t even been that cold yet and I’m already moaning! 🤣
Where was that shed bought.
Bricomarche
The shed is looking good.
Ya it’s a great little thing!
Love your combined efforts... remember if you shingle it any thing overlaps, start from lower part of roof to highest point.
Thanks!
@PortugalfromScratch NP
How about a sandwich panel roof?
She was thinking about that but transport was an issue so she went with smaller panels.
I love how you ladies 'crack on' even when faced with some challenge. I know some big men who snivel and swear at the equipment when things go wrong. Learned some mushroom stuff and shared it on Facebook. Thanks for your videos.
Ya it’s fun to work together! I learned a lot of mushroom stuff too but I’m still not confident ID-ing stuff on my own.
You can get strips of waterproof material for the tops of deck joists, maybe some of that between the walls and slabs will stop rising damp. Great work though in tough conditions.
Ah Sinead just your Auntie wth the cold
😁
Well done girls love it ❤
I love that wood for the shed. I used to buy little craft sticks just like that for my kids to play with when they were little here in the USA. I love that they are making them in a grown up size for real projects now. I love seeing you and your friends going on excursions into the woods and to festivals. Lots of variety. Great video.
Hi Kirsty, love your channel! Please let me know, what temperatures are you experiencing there atm? It's dropped cold here in the west Midlands UK this week, hopefully much warmer there, Still, you need to get that window sorted, especially if it gets close to UK levels. Brrrr! X
When roof up mayb guttering to collect water ?
Hi would a french drain around not help, mind u i know nothing about building...u guys rock😊
Love your flogs but could you please tell your friends to not pluk the mushrooms when its not to eat so they grow back next year ore the animals have something to eat 😊
It’s fine, picking mushrooms is an integral part of identifying them, it’s no more harmful than picking an apple from a tree, as the mushroom is the fruiting body 😊
Yeah - spores have already been scattered far and wide by the time a fungi is visible for picking. Best to pick and identify as loads will pop up the following day
Wollt ihr euch vergiften
You girls know so much 🤓 💡 you are the smartest 🍪 🍪 from the cookie 🍪 jar!! You crack me up 😂🤗 & make my day!! TY!! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Haha, thanks! 😀
Shenade, yaa ma fahamtay🎉
😁
is the shed tied to the ground by some kind of bolts ?
Not yet but it will be.
Good thort........nxt wind.
