- This window project in my off grid barn conversion in Portugal has definitely been a massive undertaking but I'm chugging along and making good progress. Sometimes life gets in the way of the work and in today's video the rain and a surprise wood delivery slow things down a bit. But I manage to get some carpentry done and I get another major piece of the window hole structure into place, too.

That must be about 4 chords of firewood! That should do. Lots of stacking or just piling. At least you probably won’t have to split any. The window is coming along.

I love that window!! Re the winter garden….. I wouldn’t imagine you need all the straw and cardboard like you do in the summer, to keep in the moisture. I would think that it gives slugs and snails a good place to hide and reproduce. Also….as a controlled winter garden experiment…. Just toss a packet of lettuce seeds directly onto the soil before a big rain w no extra mulch or cardboard and….see what you get. #effortlessgardener for the win
Ah that's a great point! I guess since I've never done a winter garden I'm sort of just replicating what I did for the summer but ya, snails and slugs are around in the winter and cardboard would be a nice spot for them. Thanks!

Kristy try curried potato and cauliflower…… so good! If you want a protein add chicken to the mix but I usually put chickpeas. The sauce with the potatoes is really good. I make a regular curry chicken recipe but add potatoes, cauliflower and chickpeas…. It’s a wonderful winter meal and another way to use the cauliflower ❤️🇨🇦
I add in sweet potato , pumpkin,spinach (add last ) or even asparagus. All are delicious.
Ooh yum! I often make some sort of cauliflower and/or potato curry. It's one of my faves!

Good load of firewood and value for money as it was a stacked load on the truck and not a thrown load. Concrete posts overtime break down its the reinforcing that fluctuates and begins to rust.
Ya that's a great post about the stacking, I never would have thought about that! I was amazed it all stayed in place! I think the concrete thing will be ok as it won't be supporting much weight above and will also be helpful up from below a bit. Fingers crossed!

Here in Northern France a touch of frost this morning. Once you divide your window you will loose a lot of light .Depends what you want of course- it was just a thought and would make it easier and cheaper

I was going to mention the same thing - it's surprising how much light you lose to pane frames / cross pieces. All my windows have them, and I've decided not to have them when I get round to renovating / replacing them.

Things always take much longer than you thought it's very frustrating for you.

Hi, I have 2 questions: 1. can you please link me to the video where you talk about how to make Comfrey tea AND 2. the video where you show how you compost your kitchen scraps. We have a tiny orchard (6 or 7 fruit trees) and I have planted comfrey. It's going well. I have been so inspired by your work. Thank you. Your window is progressing so well. You are truly amazing.
Hi! Sorry, no idea which video that is and it didn't come up in search but all I do is chop the comfrey right back, remove the stalks, stick the leaves in a garbage-bin type black bucket and weigh them down with a big rock, fill it with water, cover loosely with something, and wait five weeks. It smells gross so do it somewhere you don't hang out. As for compost, all I do is stick it into a pile and wait. I have three sections and I don't bother flipping it or anything. I don't have a video for this... it's quite hands-off and not at all the way to do a proper compost pile. 😁 I hope this is helpful!
Is stacking the woodpile behind the house an option? There it would be out of the way, you could add a small overhang to protect it and it seems to be the place we’re it can be delivered too anyway. Window looks great and I like the pointing of the front. I would add some concrete and rebar over the window it looks a bit unstable up there. Btw. I would also watch longer videos.
Concrete post as a support is a bit worrying. You are unlikely to see if any water has been able to penetrate into the concrete and weaken the rebar inside. Sorry to be doom & gloom but grew up in a property that was knocked down because of concrete cancer risk 😞. Well done though with all your hard work. x
Right now it's not an option because of all the crap there! 😁 It's quite a narrow bit of space with dirt sort of sliding down into it... I wonder if I could clean it up though and create a bit more room. Something to consider for next year, thanks! The roof is already supported by another lintel and the top of the window box is just cosmetic, really, so it's all good now that I've reinforced it with mortar and stones... you'll see in the next video. 🙂
Ya good point though this isn't really holding much above it. The stones I'm adding are more sitting on the front piece and the concrete thing will also have support from underneath with the chunky window box. So I think it'll be ok. 🙂

Personally, I wouldn't use the concrete posts because they have been out in the weather and when water permeates concrete and reaches the steel reinforcing; the steel then starts to corrode and causes something called concrete cancer, which weakens the concrete.
That's a good point and the other one was pretty crumbly. Luckily this is more of a filler than structural. The stones above will mostly be resting on the granite and then below the concrete thing will be a sturdy wooden box so I feel ok with it there.
Did you get the wood and your soil all covered up. Tidying up needs to be done. It should take you too long. Be nice to put your good patio chairs away in the poly tunnel and deflate your pool chair. Always a mom eh! Love you

Winter is coming early this year with a month of heavy rain and later snow. You'll be cold with a hole in the wall. You'll need professional help and fast. It ends badly if you don't wake up.
I'm not worried, I'll find a temporary solution if the window takes longer than expected. 🙂

Actually that is not the case, the pool area is done. Garden is in a manageable state. Window should be finished this month as well, if the window guy can do it. There are a lot of indoor projects also in an advanced state and these are winter projects anyway.
That is really not true. Kirsty is doing meticulous hand crafted work with natural materials like stone and clay. There is thought, knowledge, and skill, involved in every step of her work, not to mention heavy manual labour. For people who are used to seeing whole houses materialise in a month, her methods may seem slow. The difference, of course, is that what Kirsty builds will last intact, long after those 'instant' houses are no more.
Firstly it's not your channel secondly if you don't like it why watch and lots of things have been done and have to be done in different orders depending on the weather and funds to buy materials and priorities. So Kirsty keep up the good work The window is looking good and remember it's your life and in your own time 😅
Blimey, let's remember that majority of work is done single handedly. Thats not factoring all the things we dont see.. like editing content to be watched, trying to have a life off camera...laundry, cooking, shopping, buying supplies, having some time to enjoy life as well. I struggle working in 20C let alone 40C doing heavy, physical stuff.
