    Have you ever tried hemp for bowstrings? After much research, I have found that hemp is stronger than linen, isn’t affected by water like flax is. Overall, I think hemp is the way to go.

      @firstskills779 The spiral broke on me I used 2 squirrel hides. So I cut 4 long strips cow hide which are holding up good.. I prefer raw hide over sinew strings. Way to time consuming. Sythians used horse hide from what I read.

    When leaving sapwood on the back, or entire bow made of only sapwood,make sure its freshly cut as you work into a ruffed out bow. If dried for a long time in the first place the sapwood can get brittle.

I have a BL stave that I'd like to fashion into a bow and I'd like to follow the method you describe in Gill's book, but the pictures referenced in the text are missing.

    At 38'45" you're twisting it in the wrong direction, meaning you were untwisting the whole thing. A moment later seems you noticed and corrected yourself (video was cut). The linen you're using is basic raw flax actually,. Real linen is more processed. I use bookbinders linen, you can get it in thin enough thread, which let you tune the thickness of your string much more easily and the quality and strength of the thread is much more consistent and high enough.

    This is awesome. A way to make an arrow shaft, if nothing else is available. This is the last resort for making primitive shafts though. Very few places, in this world, require this technique to make a shaft, in primitive conditions. 95% of all the world, has saplings or canes to make things easier. Believe me, when life was hard, people didn't use this method. After thousands of years of primitive living, you know people definitely worked smarter, not harder. Same for the HICKORY bow string. In any area that you can get HICKORY, there are plenty of other better options for good bow strings. Only the first dumbasses didn't know this. Thanks for the most primitive way of getting by, but if you showed this video to a native person from 1000 years ago, they would probably think you were nuts.

    want to make a shorter black locust hunting bow, already cut to 58".. planned to make the limbs 2" wide to compensate but now im not sure the amount of crown to the back will allow that width... unless I hollowed the limbs? Idk!!

    • @firstskills779
      @firstskills779 Год назад

      sorry it took me a while to get with you. black locust will handle a fairly high crown because it is stronger in tension than compression. typically you run into more issues with the belly fretting than anything lifting on the back. 2 in wide would be perfect width for BL specific gravity. defiantly heat treat that belly. it makes a big difference with the compression strength.
