Have you ever tried hemp for bowstrings? After much research, I have found that hemp is stronger than linen, isn’t affected by water like flax is. Overall, I think hemp is the way to go.
@firstskills779 The spiral broke on me I used 2 squirrel hides. So I cut 4 long strips cow hide which are holding up good.. I prefer raw hide over sinew strings. Way to time consuming. Sythians used horse hide from what I read.

That is true of hemp. The stands are typically longer with less splicing
What would I need for a deer raw hide bow string.. 80lb bow?
I'll be cutting it into a big spiral, but how many plys? 3-4?
Hey Tony, I would say 4 ply. read the chapter in dr al herring book Cherokee bows and arrow. that's the best info I've seen on rawhide strings

We use the metric system in Europe. Inches, miles, gallons, feet, yards, sodium, potassium.... I know it exists, but we do not use it.
