SHED FIND vintage Yamaha dirt bike sat UNUSED FOR 15 YEARS!!! CAN I GET IT RUNNING??
Today I have pulled the old DT400 out the shed in attempt to get it going. Will a clean carb and some fuel be all it needs? Or will it require a full going over to try and start it?

which engine is related to 4/65 engine
which engine is relate 4/65 engine
I see you do this, and I can't help but to laugh. My father did the same thing to his 532 Ritax Engine in the 90's. The guy that owned it before could never make it work. Sold it to my father for 250$ thinking he wouldn't figure out what was wrong with it. Engine had a slight warp and seals wouldn't work on it. He sanded it down on a piece of glass. Took about 4 days of work. Ran like a top after. The other guy had switched to a 582 by then. He always went to see my dad for his engine troubles after that.

So that Yamazuki has just been waiting for you to ‘grow up’ and fix it? 🙈👍🏻🙏🦘
I had not really even taken notice of it until the last couple of years when I found more out about it. Then one day last week I thought to myself I would pull it out the back of the shed and get it going
@@BIGRIG2005. I dunno bro I have a 1972 Yamaha dt1 Enduro 360 with 4700 original miles on it I bought it and naturally it decided to blow a hole thru the piston 2.8 miles after I bought it and come to find out there were only 5 OEM pistons I could order and one original top end assembly now there's only 4 OEM pistons left in the market and imma have to get the top end assembly because I let my boss at the shop I work in install my piston rings and he fucked 'em up so bad the cylinder and piston nuked itself within Four minutes of it's initial startup and I was running a 30:1 premix fuel so it had lubrication that wasn't an issue at all
Very thorough work and guidance. 👍🏻🙏🦘
I have an exact same model, aciddentaly pulled the starter rope on mine and i have No idea on how to put it back in the starter, can’t find no tutorial either, do you think you could try and explain to me or possibly make a video? Would be very grateful🙏
Okay, no problems, but first I need more info. These models have two different starters. The one mine has, which sits to the side and turns the engine by a gear which raises to engage. There is also a starter which the later models have, which sits on top of the engine and spins the flywheel from on top. If you have the later model starter I cannot help you unfortunately as I have never fixed one sorry. Secondly, Has the rope become fully detached from the starter assembly or is it still attached and does not want to retract? If it does not want to return back in, the recoil spring needs repair or replacement. Sometimes the spring skips it’s little spot if you pull the rope out too far and it just needs realigning, that or it is very worn and needs replacement.
Its the exact same as yours, and when i pulled the other day it released and then it broke in half 😅 so i need to find an new rope but luckily i live on an farm so should be easy to find something alike and then reattach it.
@ErikJohansson-zq3up I will have a look at the bottom of it when I get home for you, but it is most likely very easy to fix. You will have to tie a knot at the end, wind it all the way around the starter assembly and then pull it a little through the hole in the cowl and then feed the knob through the rope and tie a knot at the end of that.
Solved it (kind of) i havent found an rope yet but i know how it works now. Thanks for the attention🙏👌
Hi BIGRIG2005, thanks for the video. I’m south of you fellas and i have had great issues with obtaining quality parts for our Fiat 555c. You mention the injection pump is a VE Bosch? I have only been able to find a VA to VE pump conversion with cheap Chinese parts. I’d like to get in contact and ask a few questions?
Hi Trevor, yes the pump is a VE, but manufactured/remanned by DAG. I obtained the pump through South Burnett tractor spares in Wooroolin QLD. They ordered it direct from Italy though, so it took a couple of weeks to arrive in the post. I think it cost a little under $3000 with postage included, but it will definitely pay itself off as the machine starts perfectly everytime and runs like a Swiss watch.
Another machine added to the stable. 🙉🙏🦘
Put 35 carb on it and add timing
Did you change the oil filter with the new oil?
No. Unfortunately I did not have one on hand when I changed the oil. When I do the next service next year I will change that.
install the gasoline filter friend There is probably a lot of rust inside the gas tank ...i am restoring the same bike, is a great bike legal on the road and goes off-road also for weekend fun .. enjoy .. check the oil level from time to time look like it burns some oil ...
Thank you, these things are on the bucket list to do. The carb needs a good clean so that will be the next video. Stay tuned!
Excellent skills, Chap ! Greetings from S Devon, UK.
Cheers mate 👍
great video, i cant believe it ran like that, lol. what is the 3y3 designation? engine family?
Thank you 👍, yes neither can I haha. I believe the 3y3 is a designation code for the model of bike, as there are a couple of different xt250 models. I have also found all sorts of Yamaha bikes have a 3** designation code, so I think it’s just a Yamaha thing for identifying bike types and models.
Big job for Big Rig.
Are you still chewing? Lol. 👍🏻🙏🦘
No, don’t think I bit off more than I can chew with this one haha 👍👍
Good job again. It’s important to look after your Johnson, mate. 👍🏻🙏🦘😊
Congratulations on getting a job. Apprenticeship? Nice gift of the bike too. Ride safely. Cheers. 👍🏻🙏🏍️🛵🦼🤣🦘
Hi Grahame, thanks, yep it is an apprenticeship, as a heavy diesel mechanic. Bike is a great gift, only trouble is finding parts seems to be a little harder than expected 😂
@@BIGRIG2005. That’s great. I can foresee your place filling up with unloved machines like MartyT’s. 👍🏻🙏🦘
You didn't re-polarize the dynamo; it is a simple but essential requirement. Google how to do it.
Dynamo was re-polarized before fitment. Watch the part where I bench test it and you will see me polarise it to negative earth.
@@BIGRIG2005. You did it incorrectly. You have to polarise the dynamo at the voltage regulator. Otherwise you cannot guarantee that the dynamo will charge properly. Polarising at the regulator ensures the regulator is not faulty and that there is continuity through the cables and connections.
@TheRanger0ne the way I was always taught was to polarise at the dynamo field terminal before fitting. I haven’t ever tried doing it at the regulator box end but will try it. Cheers 👍
Good job. Have you tried the old ‘screwdriver to the ear’ to hear odd noises’.
No I didn’t even think of that Grahame 😂, shall try it next time I hear a squawking dynamo 👍
Hi, You replaced the four " SINGLE HOLE" injectors . You did a good job. I have some questions about them: 1)The new ones are "SINGLE HOLE " or " 4 HOLES"? 2) are them the cheap chinese ones (3 for 50€ ) or the original expensive BOSCH pn 0280 150210 (250€ each)? This is what i did on my 1991 K75 which now starts but runs inconsistenly. Tks a lot from Rome.
Hi Antonio, The originals were only single nozzle, so I kept it original and ordered the single nozzle. They are the Chinese copies. I do not plan to keep them in, as I will put a seal kit in the original Bosch ones sometime and clean them out and refit, but the Chinese ones will do fine, just for now. My father believes it runs alright with the Chinese ones, but I am thinking it is running a bit on the lean side. The 4 nozzle injectors make them run better and more smooth I have heard. I could be wrong but I think some of the later K100’s and K75’s had the 4 nozzle injectors? Many thanks 👍
Tks a lot for your esaustive and fast reply. Would you pls copy the link where i can buy the SINGLE HOLE? Tks once again.
Good antifreeze will help stop or at least slow down the liner erosion issue. I used to work for a Nuffield/Leyland dealer, and often did engines on JCB's too We used to liners on the farm, in a day. Cracked or pin holes, a common issue on the 3.8. less so on later 4/98 - 6/98 I wouldn’t say we did it every week, but we used to do more than 1 a month for certain. Other than the liners these were a tough, smooth running engine. esp with the in line pump set up well If the liners were tight and wouldn’t move with the puller, lifting the tractor a little with a bar on the trolley jack and hit the front weight bar with a sledge hammer and the stuck one used to pop free
I don’t own that type of vehicle but nonetheless it was interesting. 👍🏻🙏
Keep it going mate 👍🏻
i am trying to figure out how much clearance from ground to car i need in order to change the oil
Hi, I am surprised that you say the Leyland (Blue Engine) is bored out. I always thought that the 10/60 & 4/65 Nuffield's, along with the 384 Leyland used an engine with the same bore & stroke. The differing power outputs down to injector pump setting. The 10/60 ran at 2000 rev's , where as 4/65 and 384 (if my aging memory is correct) run at max revs of 2200. Good video - nice work !
Both the engines are the same size (3.8L), but the blocks on the later motors themselves are bored out. This is because the earlier 4/60, 10/60 and 4/65 had a tendency for the liners to go porous due to the small thickness of the liners. To accomodate thicker liners and keep the same displacement, the blocks were bored bigger from what I have gathered to support thicker liners. This is what I found when ordering liners, as the 384 engine has liners that are a couple of thou bigger
@@BIGRIG2005. Thank you. Now it makes sense to me. Keep up the good work! Greeting from Vic.
Where’s your air mask and goggles while painting mate?
Yeah I will admit, I probably should be wearing a dust mask 😐, but I will always paint either outside, or in a well ventilated area like in this case, where the breeze blows the fumes away.
coming along real good.... nice work mate
Thanks mate, part 2 isn’t far away so stay tuned 👌👍
Nice work again.... have a great Christmas..... thanks for all your videos this year
And a merry Christmas to you mate, my Christmas is all sorted this year now I have an outboard to go fishing with haha
Ditto to the above. You had to get stuck into the plumbing again. 👍🏻🙏🦘
Hiw did you go finding parts for the 4/65
Parts were easy to obtain, just a bit pricey on postage. They were all sourced through Tractor spare parts LTD, and took about a week to come from England to Australia.
Good job. Pleased to see you wearing your Asian safety boots. Also, the sound of rain on the roof was comforting. Enjoy the boat. 👍🏻🙏🦘
nice work mate, be good to get it on the water 👍
Good boy
nice work, mine has a generator and it would be good to upgrade to an alternator like your tractor
Honestly keep the generator, much less mucking around. I love them as they are adjustable and easily diagnosable if they break down.
hehe I'd like to see a video on that :)@@BIGRIG2005.
each time i disconnect the battery (which is after i use it each time due to a month or so just sitting)I have to (forgot now) flash the generator or regulator to make the generator to charge
From my understanding flashing or “polarising” should only need to be done once, and once it is done you are set. Do you get a distinct spark when you flash? It is very weird that all of a sudden your battery will start charging after a repolarise on the dynamo.
It needs to be flashed everytime you disconnect the battery, otherwise it wont charge the battery... and yeah you do get a small spark...i dont do that much, i just leave it and charge the battery over night from time to time... I did flash it once off the generator positive and it worked as well@@BIGRIG2005.
Good job. You have so many vehicles and motors, by the time you finish servicing them all, you will have to start again. 😂 What is the old Ford going to be doing?
The Ford is my Neighbours tractor, I’m just servicing it for him. Will most likely be doing a lot of slashing and from what he has told me, dragging trees around.
Heres a tip for your injector pump. Connect a grunty little spring into one hole on your stop lever anfd the other end into the throttle lever. This way the throttle is always in idle when stopping and it pulls the cable back in without you having to push it. Plus always make sure the throttle can return to idle. It was in a modification bulletin from CAV waaaay back in the day.
Gold. She started 👍. Put the new spark plugs in. That should smooth her out on the tune.
Greetings and congratulaitions From wallonnie, the French speaking part of belgium I have a 3/45 since 1970,but got great problems with the engine after 2years I had the chance, to find a nuffield dealer who replaced the engine 3/45 with a nuffield 3/42 renewed. The original 3/45 was certainly made the day after a long we at the pub........
Haha, very nice the pub is the best place to celebrate 👍👍. The 2.6l 3/42 motors are very good, watch out again, for liner problems. I do not believe they have as many problems as the 2.8 in the 3/45 however.
A drive of it would have been interesting. 👍🏻🙏🦘
I will put a video up eventually, as of yet however she hasn’t even got the blade hooked up fully 😂
Can't beat one of the old Johnson Outboards. 😁👍
Good to see you’ve got a grip on the Johnson Mr Big. Add a life vest with your tool kit mate. 👍🏻🙏🦘
Yes have got a life jacket, only take it out when I actually go to bigger dams, rivers and the ocean, as our dam is not that big and I can capably swim to shore 😂

I do have shoes on, thongs (flip flops for those in America) are my work boots 😂🤣
Hi, friend, you didn't put a spring in the power valve.
Spring was replaced on the power valve just didn’t show it on camera
Where are you getting your gasket kits from?
@imanottelling2963 I buy all the gasket kits from Heads Tractor Spares in Logan Qld. The kits are Sparex/Spaco kits, which is what I believe most injection pump shops use.
Good to see you’re branching out. At $110 per hour, that should get you some good gear. 😂😂👍🏻🙏🦘
@grahameroberts8109 I’d be able to get a whole snap on setup if I was charging that much haha
Nice work mate, I'd be very interested in this 3000 series.... what year model is the 3000 ?? I really enjoy your content.....
Year is 1974, non pre-force 3000.
Good day! May be you know, that's the model number of this kick starter part?
Sorry mate, I do not know what the kick starter part number is. It is a different one to the alloy one.
Never knew a Johnson had kidney stones! Good job. A splash of paint would finish it off nicely. 🙈👍🏻🙏🦘
Did you ever do a part 2 to the Ford 3000 tractor engine ??
Yes I rebuilt the injection pump in that video
