Hello slot car racing fans. The scope of this channel is to provide a conduit of information for both you the viewer and me, your host. I am no expert in any fields - but I do enjoy a good challenge and I'm always trying to put ideas into reality. I will try to remain humble and provide honest opinions and reviews that are family friendly. On top of tinkering with new ideas, I will also try to provide uncut footage of both digital and analog racing using my own creation - the AXEL_BOX. I have some interesting ideas for car reviews and tuning, so be sure to stay 'tuned'!
Father’s Day Race
A race event with my wife held this past Father’s Day. I couldn’t be happier to have her join me with some track time, and she’s got some talent with a controller as you’ll find out. Enjoy

Hello everyone, welcome back to Sunshine Speedway! When I first starting dabbling in the massive world of analog slot cars I found myself hoping to find specific brand/model reviews of cars I was interested in so I could see with some detail how they looked inside and out. Hello everyone and welcome back to Episode #5. Today's video is a simple demonstration on how the little changes make a big impact on the drivability of a NSR GT3 class car. This car was purchased for a racing event that I was highly anticipating: the NSR Nationals event held in Edmonton Alberta Sept. 9/10th. The event initially included two races for the GT3 Class; the NSR Tourist Trophy, NSR ...

Very nice Fathers day present! 🏁
I couldn’t ask for anything more really
Love the Family racing Alex. Thanks Brother!
Family racing is just as fun as racing with the boys IMO
Those Fly classics are great! Keep creating! Enjoyed the layout!
With a few aftermarket parts those Fly cars are a huge amount of fun. I know you have a love for FLY cars and I totally see why
Good Ole fun look like a great day
Good to c the wife racing well done 👍
She has fun so long as we don’t talk about the cost of the hobby 🤫
Your microphone is horrendously bad, you should get something better like a Rode or DJI and the music is twice the volume as well. Not trying to poke fun just letting you know.
Noted, thanks. Can’t commit a ton of my life to editing unfortunately but I will keep this in mind for the next
@@Sunshine_Speedway I sure hope I didn't offend you, but your video content is good otherwise.
I used this for the first time last night with a couple of buddies, and I chose the "Dynamic" option for the Time Table Sorting, because I wanted the car that was in first place at the top of the list, then 2nd below it, and third below 2nd. The problem was, the placement was only using the fastest lap as the deciding factor for the placement of the race, and not the Laps. This annoyed the hell out of us last night. Why the hell wouldn't they add the option for actual Lap placement to be listed in order on the screen from 1st place and down, you know, like all other races ever done, because that is the entire point of the race?????? I couldn't believe this feature wasn't available, as it's the entire reason for my wanting the app in the first place. You don't automatically become 1st place for the entire race based on your single best lap time, in hopes that nobody else can beat that 1 lap time moving you down to 2nd until you can possibly beat that record lap time, that's ridiculous... Am I missing something here, or did they really do that?
I can't get this to work on my IPhone. it's asking me for my IP address to connect and then will not connect. I have solid blue "bluetooth" connect light but the app will not launch. Any suggestions?
I will look into it for you
Whats nice about the 1/24 Carrera track is that I am able to run all scales (HO,1/43,1/32 and 1/24). I am analog now but I imagine if I added the CU then the other digital tracks would not work for analog for some of the scales? Nice video!🏁
Catching up on the livestream, sorry I missed it. Keep up the great work, Alex!
Thanks for the support. Newbie to the livestream world for sure. Baby steps right? Take care Marty
That could have been mine your working on. I plan on eventually adding a wood track from RTS to my basement this year. My grandson Axel loves the digital but is looking forward to using different cars, with his namesake.
Yours was definitely in the mix Pete!
I need to tell how much I am thankful that you made the AXELBOX for me. Thank you for making it affordable for the average joe ! Keep up the good work Sir.
100% agree
Glad you like it! I appreciate feedback from those that have taken a chance on my product line
Tires are the single most important factor racing magnet or non-magnet. I love racing both. Digital magnet racing is an absolute blast racing with others. By myself Im usually running non mags or very low strength mags. I dont get the mag non mag arguments. They are both fun to me. To each their own.
Good info, just learning the app. So helpful. Gave you a sub Race On!
Thanks for the sub! It’s a great app and the fact they are constantly updating it means they are listening to the users. You can’t beat that
Amazing track! Congratulations!
This was so helpful. As a newbie to the hobby it really helps accelerate my enjoyment of the app. Thank you for your time and guidance.
Glad it was helpful!
This is a huge help, thank you! I'm also hunting down a way to add more sounds to the existing library - do you know if this has ever been accomplished?
I don’t think it is possible no, the sounds are not found in any of the folders that are accessible from the FILES App on either a tablet or cell phone. It would be my assumption that the audio sounds are imbedded into the software and can only be updated by app updates by the creator. Send them some feedback on what you’d like to see, or better yet see if they can make the sound library similar to that of the car library where you can add sounds. Some audio clips from RUclips videos would be a good start for some new sounds!
Hi, would you mind if I ask where you got the flexible catch fence at 18:30. Thanks Mark
Hey Mark, if you google search ‘muretto protezione stl’ and look for a username FVICARI or Francesco Vicari you will find the barrier fence and the barrier wall that it is intended to plug into. I was cutting the stems that go into the blocks on and hot glueing them to my track lighting
@@Sunshine_Speedway oh cool, thank you for the reply and the info. I'll check it out. Thanks again Mark.
Great video for a newbie like me :-) at 13:30 , we can see speeding info for Batman #2....is the sector must be activated to be able to see the speed ?
When you set up your track info on the main screen you can input the length of your track in centimeters. The app does some mathematical magic to determine a ‘scale speed’ of the car based on its lap time. I hope that helps!
@@Sunshine_Speedway thanks for replying, it is now working with yours hints :-)
Great Video Brother. My box is on the way so I'm brushing up by watching this video over and over!
Please.. no orange hemmoroïd red hat wannabe stuff.. Nice layout.
Great video! Thanks for sharing your insights and experience in your track build. Congratulations on the arrival of your child.
Thanks so much! He’s 5 months now and does follow the cars on track pretty good these days. Whenever he’s fussy I take him out there and sometimes he falls asleep - win win!
Can I ask what you used for the catch fencing on the banked corner? It looks semi-flexible, and perhaps better than some 3D printed options.
The catch fence is a 3D printed part of found online. It resembles that of a chain link fence and is flexible to install and is also very forgiving to the cars. As you might see there are a few segments that have holes blown into them - Carrera cars mostly… haha. They are freight trains due to their weight and when they come out of the slot they cause more damage to the fence than to themselves.
Thanks for this - as a modeller coming into slot car racing, this was really helpful. My initial layout was very similar to yours and I had many of the same issues / tweaks to make :)
Glad I could give you some insight. There’s a million ways to make it all happen, if there were a ‘next time’ for me there would be a few steps I’d do differently for sure and some others I’d do the same. Live and learn am I right?
Wow man all the little things really bring it all together its soo cool! Thanks for sharing, ive just brought 30m of scaleauto track myself and am keen as to have a play!
Bit by bit each little detail really sums it all up for sure. Be sure to take the to enjoy some racing along the way. I caught myself a few times losing steam because the track had been disassembled for so long I didn’t realize I needed to turn some laps to get motivated again
Is it possible to purchase an Axel Box without Facebook? I am not a member of Facebook and prefer not to join.
If you know someone who has FB ge them to contact me via the AxelBox homepage. It’s far easier to share information privately via this method than over RUclips.
Can we time drag race on this app?
The SmartRace app isn’t really geared towards drag racing. The start of the race uses the 5 lights on the CU as well as the overhead start gantry lights, but there’s a bit of disconnect between when the lights go out and the start of the race. For some folks it’s easy to jump start as the anticipated start moment isn’t always what you’d expect - there’s a bit of a delay. If you were hard pressed to use it you could, all you’d have to do is set up a split time track piece at the finish line as use the sector 1 time as your finish time
Great work and great tips.... my son, daughter and I just put the tables in place for our track..... Let the process begin! (congrats on your little guy!)
That is awesome! It’s so great to share a hobby with your children. My two- girls aren’t overly interested but I have high hopes my son will when he’s older
Hello, do you have a video on your "best wireless charger on the market…" or details on the design or a model Tinkercad ? Thanks
I would like to put together a tutorial video explaining how I put this charger together on Tinkercad
Hi, Alex, I subscribed to your channel a few weeks ago,... and you obviously have experience with Smartrace and would love for you to tell me how to make the transition from a qualifier to a lap based race. I have tried to get Smartrace to use each driver's fastest lap to set up the Main event. Another youtuber messaged me and told me that Smartrace will indeed use the fastest lap from the qualifier for the main setup. Here is what he said... "when it comes to qualifying and you want to give each driver 2min each - set the qualifying session up for 2min x however many drivers you have, plus 30-60 seconds in between for the sake of tire cleaning or track maintenance etc. if you’re using SmartRace it will take the fastest laps of all drivers and set the running order of your race when you change from a qualifying session to a race session - just make sure you don’t go to the main mend to start your race otherwise your qualifying results will be lost." I really appreciate your time reading this lengthy message, can you please help me with this? Thank you in advance.
Please, tell me where to order one of these Axel Box. I need one bad.
If you’ve got Facebook search for the AxelBox homepage
Hi Alex 👋 like you i take the magnets out of my carrera cars .and add a little weight ..racing with magnets is so unrealistic. I bought an analogue and Digital set and put them together ..after two hours i removed my digital components and have be analogue ever since ...adding cars from whatever brand I want and no expense of chips . Yout track looks amazing. Great quality video I enjoyed watching, 👍 Greetings from Latvia 🤗...Harry
A hey Harry, yes I agree with your thoughts on the magnets. I ran my carrera cars for a good year or so with magnets in and once I did a race on a wooden track and felt that lack of magnetic force I was hooked. It felt like the magnets were stealing away from the cars actual driving abilities. I should keep a few cars with them left in, folks that come over to race often can’t handle the non-mag cars easily right off the start. Subbed your channel as well, keep up the good work on your end 👍👍
Looks amazing and is exactly what I’m looking for. How can I get info on pricing and ordering? Thanks.
If you’re on Facebook lookup axel_box homepage. You can reach me directly via that group
One of the best videos outhere on SmartRace, thanks for sharing 👍
Glad it was helpful! There’s far more to it that I haven’t touched on, but someday soon I hope to expand on it
Im deaf, i have my sound all the way up and i can barely hear it. is it me or the video?
I’ve got my iPad at 1/2 volume and it’s plenty loud. If you are watching on computer external speakers it could be an audio settings issue 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
You could turn on the CC, that seems to work pretty well at a short glance
Does it still works with smart race app when in analog mode?
It sure does. You have to have the add-on feature that allows you to run the SmartRace connect server. You’ll then have a second device set up to visually count the laps (I use an old iPhone for this). It works very well
Congratulations 🙏
Thanks 🏁🏎️🏎️
Great Layout‼️♥️🏎️🏁👍🏾
Thank you! 👍
Great video. going to order one.
Good choice! LOL. Find me on FB👍🏽
So great😊
Thanks, I wish I took more video of the build but I think the ideas are pretty clear
Nice video, thanks! Do you have a tutorial on setting up and using a database feature? I really want to be able to look at lap data over time.
Not yet! I can look into it into the near future. Life’s been pretty hectic with our new baby 😵💫
@@Sunshine_Speedway Oh, congratulations! Hope everyone is healthy and good. We're empty nested now, so as busy and challenging as life may get, be sure to enjoy every minute - it's gone in a blink.
What did you use for those gray guardrails. They are nice!
They are all from Race Track Scenics out of the US. Check them out as they have a growing library of scale buildings and similar items for your layout. 100% worth the price as the build quality is excellent
@@Sunshine_Speedway nice! Thanks for the response!
Hi where are you located? Thanks.
I’m in Alberta just south of Calgary in a little town called High River. I understand you and the folks at Rocky Mountain Racers are friends? I’ve raced with Tom and his crew a few times now, all good folks. I’ve watched some of your videos, you have a great track layout and the proxies are enjoyable to watch👍🏽🏁
@@Sunshine_Speedway so neat. I’m from Lethbridge, Calgary now here in Kelowna. I’ve curled in High River actually when I lived in Calgary.
thx for this guide especially the svg section. the website is a god send
The sector timing widget is such a cool thing they’ve added. It makes me want to build a much larger track just to get a third one built into the diagram 😂
Good work on the video. Great tips for my work in progress track layout.
Glad it was helpful!
Congratulations on the new little man, merry Christmas to you and your family, he’s a great present, and may be a slot car dude lol 🏎️🏎️🏎️🏎️🏎️😊
Fingers crossed! I’m sure one day I’ll have to teach him so we can run daddy’s good cars on track together 🏁🏎️🏎️
