If You Give a Mouse a Cookie Storyboard
I didn't even know that there was a deleted part of the opening where Arthur is drowning; I'm probably guessing that it was removed because it was a bit too graphic and scary. I think the original script would've gone something like Arthur falls off a cliff into the ocean, then a huge spider saves him from drowning on a beach or something, and Arthur runs away from the spider, forgetting that it saved his life. Also, I have to assume that these voice-over recording sessions were done in very late 1997 and/or it had to have been one of the first episodes done for season 3 since Buster and his voice actor, Daniel Brochu were part of this since the actor returned from his trip abroad in Australia.
The fall setting really sets the episode apart from the others. I love the backgrounds used. The episode overall is kinda basic compared to the others but is pretty alright in my opinion.
yeah, the background department did a nice job with the autumn backgrounds on this one...I remember the Director, Greg Bailey, was happy with how the show looked, even though the script is kind of weak.
Hey I don't know if you have it or not but I honestly wanna see a script read of the episode Play It Again D.W or Arthur's Spelling Trubble.
I didn't know Arthur aired on "the Spot" one time! Either I'm wrong, or it didn't.
I used a copy posted on Dailymotion that seems to be from "The Spot."

OMG!!! 🤯 Thank you soooo much for uploading these!!! I never thought someone would find voice-over recording sessions from one of my favorite children's TV shows from my childhood! 😄I definitely do hope you have and will upload more of them in the future. Speaking of which, do you happen to have the recording sessions from "Arthur's Perfect Christmas"? If so, maybe you can upload it pretty soon since Christmas is coming up right around the corner. Keep up the awesome work and thanks again!!!
Thank you! I will keep uploading over the next couple weeks...I'm not sure I have 'Christmas'...many tapes are unlabelled or just have production numbers, not episode titles. I've just been grabbing random ones out of a box I found in my basement. Although, I only have episodes from the first 6 seasons since I only worked on those. Thanks for listening!

Whats your thoughts on the 2015 Bratz reboot??? Just wondering.
I'm sorry, I didn't see it...I only worked on the 2004 movie that was in 2D. I know Mattel was suing the Bratz owner for a long time for being "a barbie rip off" but Bratz ultimately won the lawsuit in 2011 so I guess they were free to experiment with a reboot after that point.
Hello so you like Bratz??? I liked the tall Bratz from 2013 back when I was a kid. I'm not that big big on the short ones lol
What's your thought on the 2015 Bratz reboot by the way???
DAD! WHY Won’t Spanky Wake UP?! From Matt Neff: “THAT Parrot Is Definitely DISEASED!!” “Ah He’s NOT Dead, He’s-Uh, RESTING.” “The Parrot IS NO MORE - THIS Is An ‘EX-PARROT’!!”
“BANANA! MORE BANANA, BANANA AGAIN!!” “Banana Was MY Idea! Without ME, There’s NO Banana!!” - Binky (Deep Voice): “BANANA!!…” “Banana, LOTS N’ LOTS of Banana!”
Joe Fallon must have thought Binky saying banana 300 times would be funny...which it WAS!
@@offmodel I Can't imagine Why
I don’t know who you are, but Those recording sessions was like omg we discovered behind the scenes voice acting 😂 FYI: My father was older than the entire arthur tv show's age. Do you have... Arthur big hit recording session?
I worked on the infamous 'Big Hit' as the Storyboard Supervisor back in 1998 so I should have it in my boxes somewhere. I'll get to digitizing them all soon, although some of the tapes have tape mould so I don't know if they're playable anymore. I threw out so many over the years...I never imagined anyone would want to hear them. I guess Arthur was a popular show!
@offmodel you're Peter huggan right? Edit: difference between the og storyboard & final (aired ver) For arthur's big hit
@@SundyBoi Yes, that's me!
@offmodel really nice to have you there! I hope you're okay and safe and I wish you the very best luck, So will you tell me the difference between the og storyboard & final storyboard (aired ver)?
i somehow completely forgot they had a whole barbershop number in this episode
oh, that triggered a memory! Yeah, so what happened is the original script called for a 'barbershop quartet' to be at a festival of some sort...the Montreal studio (Cinar) had to spend a lot of money to locate and record an authentic barbershop quartet for this one thing in the script...they tried a few local actors singing but the client said it 'didn't sound authentic enough' so they flew in a group from New York to record it. Ate up a big chunk of the budget for that one song. Then of course episode was too long and the first thing that got cut was the barbershop quartet!
@@offmodel The barbershop quartet actually made it into the final episode! But it's still wild that the group was flown in all the way from New York just to record a 20-30 second segment that, to be honest, was fairly inconsequential to the episode's story.
the best bratz animation by far. the characters are perfect in 2d
These are really cool!
Thanks! 😁
Is this the first ever bratz movie? Also why did they decide to switch to the more common 3d animation and add weird storylines - like how they find bones in the cupboard in one ep or weird movies in general like the bratz kidz spooky sleepover movie?
yes, I think this is the first movie...I animated on it around 2003. I'm sorry, I don't know why they went to 3D or went to edgier storylines....maybe to differentiate from the Mattel / Barbie stuff? I remember hearing about a lawsuit from Mattel for 'rights issues' but the Bratz owner ultimately won that suit.
I hated this episode when I was little, I'm terrified of frogs and toads lol
I actually remember this at least the finalized version where the characters have dark colors for some reason tho it only shows the part where the two are already dancing in that PBS Kids Use your Imagination music video of sorts in the 2000s-2010s
Wow, you saw it? I never saw the finished version until 22 years later when someone sent me a link to a video uploaded to RUclips. At the time I was told to just make some dancing animation for "some promo PBS was making." I think I got $60 for it at the time. :)
@offmodel interesting I wonder why you never shown the final product, cause I saw said bumper all the time in the 2000s till at least 2012-2013. I remember my PBS station KUHT played that often past the 2000s and I still remember the dancing part with Arthur and D.W. tho I wish I could see what the unreleased Arthur's Big Hit storyboard looked like where the punch isn't shown
@@loser2466 I was at the studio in Montreal, Canada and I didn't have cable TV at home to pick up PBS so I never saw the promo...actually I never saw ANY of animation for the 95 episodes of Arthur I worked on unless I was walking past the editing suite at the studio! I have the storyboard for Arthur's Big Hit in my basement but it is only a xerox...the original storyboard had a scene where Arthur clearly punches DW on the shoulder but it was cut out and covered over by a Post-It note because the client didn't want to show Arthur actually hit DW...but it unintentionally becomes much more violent by NOT showing the punch.
@@offmodel I meant to say shown but yeah I wonder what it looks like, since it'd be unreleased media, but that's a shame you never got to see your work unlike the majority of people like me including that RUclipsr covering on Arthur Matt Neff in his FU D.W. series he's been doing since at least 2022 or so. It's a shame you never got to see your finalized work I wonder who did the rest of the work like the finalizing like inking and painting both with cels and digital and who finalized the animation
@@loser2466 I was the Storyboard Supervisor...I remember clearly the shot that was removed was a medium shot of DW and then Arthur's fist comes in and hits her on the shoulder, pushing her off screen...then the shot that follows is the same as appears in the episode of DW falling to the ground...without the medium shot it looks like Arthur punches DW in the face, he really just punches her on the shoulder. The removed shot was never animated...it never got past the storyboarding stage. The key poses for Arthur animation was done in Montreal and ink & paint coloring of the animation was done in Seoul, Korea, using a primitive digital ink and paint program known as AXA...the only cels that exist were done just for promotion or color guides.
Thank you for all these voice recordings of Arthur . The sound quality is impeccable .
thanks! I didn't know anyone would want to hear them...I should have stored them better...the tapes were thrown in a box in my basement for almost 30 years and many have been damaged by tape mould.
@offmodel Question : How did the audition process go for Arthur ? . I know in 1995 , most of the cast were already contracted on The Little Lulu Show .
@@GMANKOOL23 yes, Montreal had a small group of actors that were extremely good...Cinar's bread and butter was doing French and English dubbing of TV shows for the Quebec market. I wasn't part of the audition process for Arthur so I don't know how it went, but I know Marc Brown really wanted Michael Yarmush for Arthur, his voice was absolutely perfect for Arthur...that was the main reason the show came to Montreal.
The lost inspector gadget episode And it's not a creepypasta
What’s it like being a storyboard artist?
it's fun that you get to draw cartoons all day, but it can be stressful because the deadlines are very tight (you only get about two to three weeks to draw an entire 11 minute episode like the one you see here) and then you have to be able to accept a lot of criticism and revision requests of your work from all the Directors and Producers that look at your storyboard.
@ Have you ever done an eyes in the dark gag before? It’s whenever it is pitch dark, the characters' open eyes are always visible.
@@MrTimshellscherber ha ha, yes, that is the old cartoon trick of saving on animation. I even saw Digital Circus do it recently. Once we had a big studio meeting discussion about 'do human eyes really glow in the dark when the lights are turned off?'
Do you have voice recordings of the blizzard I really want to see that one, but no rush
I should have that one because I remember working on that episode...I've had a big box of tape cassettes of the recordings in my basement for almost 30 years but some are damaged with tape mould...I'll try to post what tapes are still working over the next few weeks, hopefully The Blizzard will be there.
Do you have any voice records from “Arthur’s Eyes”? If so, could you upload them soon?
I'm sorry, I don't think I have some of the very earliest episodes...I think the earliest one I have is the episode where DW's parakeet dies and she befriends a toad. I'll keep searching through my tapes, though...I might have it in my basement.
These are so cool. I played some of these side by side with the actual episodes and have noticed a few alternate takes by the actors. Are there any blooper recordings with the voice actors flubbing their lines? I imagine those would be worth a listen.
Yes, those are fun...I only have a few reel-to-reel tapes of un-edited dialog recordings but I can't transfer them to digital right now because my tape recorder needs a new belt, but as soon as I have it repaired I will post those. I currently only can transfer to digital the cassette tapes of "Nat Pauses" which were like a "Take 1" version of the actors' lines. These were given to the storyboard artists to create the first pictures of the script. During storyboarding the client or Director would ask for "Take 2" versions known as 'pick up lines' if they didn't like the way a line was read...even after the animation was finished we could get pick up requests if they still weren't happy with the acting...in that case the actors would have to 'lip sync' to the finished animation using a monitor. A lot of work went into getting the dialog just right!
Do you have voice recordings from DW Blows the Whistle
That's a good episode! I might have it...I have a big box of 200 cassettes of audio from when I worked on the show but they are just labelled by production number, not by episode title. I'm slowly converting them to digital...I'm pretty sure I do have Whistle since I remember working on it. I'll upload some more episodes soon.
@@offmodelThanks so much for sharing these recordings; hearing what was going on "behind the scenes" with the voice work is fascinating! You mention that the tapes have production numbers; I would very much be interested in knowing what the production numbers are for different Arthur episodes; I often wonder in what order the episodes were produced vs. their airing order, and I've not generally been successful in determining this. I'm an administrator on the Arthur wiki on FANDOM (a fan-made website and database devoted to all elements of Arthur), and I think the episode production numbers would be a great addition to add to the episode pages on the wiki. Is there any way you might be able to provide the production numbers of the episodes? If not, I'd understand. Thanks again for these awesome videos!
@@PatrikLowe ok, I'll try to collect the production numbers...I don't have a complete collection of recordings, though. They are just random tapes thrown in a box with hand written numbers on them, no episode titles. It will take some time to digitize then to find out what is on the tapes, please bear with me.
@@offmodel Thanks for getting back to me. I appreciate it. No worries! I'm really just interested in knowing if an episode's production number (any episode from any season) can be determined; anything along those lines that you might be able to find would be much appreciated. I understand all the time and effort it takes for you to be able to find and identify these recordings and post them here, and I really appreciate all that you've shared here. I don't want to add any pressure onto you, and if you're not interested in doing this or it just doesn't work out for whatever reason, I again would completely understand. Take care!
And To Think This Was Originally Supposed To Be The Final Episode
was this to be the last one? I didn't know that. I remember when we hit episode 65B there was some discussion that we had enough episodes for syndication so there was no need to make more (Episode 65B was the Library Card Music Festival show on the production schedule so they wanted to end with a bang.) But we started winning Emmys so they kept making more since they knew they had a hit show on their hands.

0:11 Stock Audio Footage From Arthur And The Crunch Cereal Contest
whoa, you're right! it must have been one of the sounds in the "bank" that were used a lot...like Arthur's gasp!
Do you have any recordings with interactions between the voice actors?
Yes, I have some but it's on reel-to-reel tape and my tape machine needs a new belt. I've ordered a new one but there's a postal strike where I live...I'll get it transferred to digital as soon as I can. But I did listen to one tape a year ago and there was a lot of funny conversations between the (1996-2000 era) cast...Micheal Yarmush, the voice of Arthur, had new running shoes...Francine's actress was talking about her soccer practice...one of the other kids was player "Crash Bandicoot." That kind of stuff.
Whenever you get a chance to post those that would be amazing. No rush or pressure! Did everyone record together or just the main actors like for example did those with only a few lines like Sue Ellen’s parents for example join the main ensemble?
@@willhalpern2067 Great question! Yes, most recordings were done as ensembles for the main cast...but, yes, if one actor just had a few lines they would come in later to do pick up lines...there was a 'scale rate' so even just for one line they got a day's pay, at least. For the main cast they preferred to do ensemble recordings because the energy from the kids was better that way. Sometimes, it was difficult to schedule everyone because one kid would be sick or had school, etc. so sometimes ensembles were not possible. We were recording one show per week so it was kind of chaotic with a large cast and we had to slap together whatever audio we could!
@@offmodel Hey sorry I was on the wrong account when I asked., my last questions is did the minor characters who might have a bunch of lines for a few episodes like Sue Ellen, Fern, Prunella, George, etc join the ensemble for those episodes or would they come in solo to record all of their lines at once for the season. Also was there an encouragement to deliver the lines with more of an American sound or was having a Canadian accent not a big deal to the voice actors
@@willhalpern2067 I'm sorry, I was just the Storyboard Supervisor (I did the visual stuff) so I wasn't part of the scheduling of the actors to record, but I did attend the recording sessions occasionally...I can remember they used ensembles for those minor characters too when the episode had a lot of lines for them...but there probably cases where they recorded individually for minor characters. Yes, we did occasionally have comments from WGBH that the show was "too Canadian" not just with accents but also visually. (like the milk bag in "Great Big Fight" episode.) There wasn't much we did about it, though.
I wonder how they choose the best take. Obviously there's good and bad takes, lines read and mis-read, etc, but I would assume that the staff went through many good takes, and had to choose one that was the best of the lot. I just wonder what the methodology was.
Hi! The scripts would have 'line numbers' next to each line (1, 2, 3, etc.) and the actors would read the line number and take number before doing each line. (for example: Line 23, Take 1). The voice record supervisor would often approve the take 1 read on the spot, or if they wanted it improved they would ask the actor to do a take 2 read, or a take 3, etc... Later the tape was edited so all the dialog that wasn't in the script was removed, this is known as a 'Nat Pause' tape. That's what you are hearing here. It was what we used to draw the pictures on the storyboard and animation...we didn't need all the chatting between takes. Maybe I should upload an unedited tape...do you think people would want to hear that?
Fascinating. I had never heard of a "Nat Pause" tape.
Woah! These were the songs before they were finished into the ones we know today?! Thanks for sharing this!! ❤❤
yes, that's right! They did two versions of the Library Card song with a temp voice (Sonja Ball, the voice of "Mom" on Arthur) and WGBH decided to use the second version because it sounded more "street."

I'm not entirely sure...they only had reel-to-reel magnetic tape in those days in the studio...there must have been a speed control knob on the recorder unit. It sounds pretty good considering the primitive tech we had in those days!
