Cheap LS 4.8 LR4: Full Test Run, Tear Down, and Inspection
I’ve been in the market for a super cheap 4.8 to rob parts from for one of my personal motors. The price was right for this unit and I figured there was no better way to figure out what was up with it than firing it up on the runstand.
If you would like this engine for yourself please buy it from me. I do not want it.
I also have many other engines and swap parts that I’m always trying to move. The more people buy the more I’ll go get more.

I finally acquired one of the holy grails of LS engines: an aluminum 6 liter. Although it’s not technically an LS2 it’s still just as good. Other than my personal 2012 Silverado I’ve really never messed with (running) gen 4 engines, so I’m excited to continue to experiment with this one. If anyone is looking for a used 2ML70 hybrid transmission please let me know. I don’t need this 300lb thing ...

I was contacted by a viewer and told that they had an engine that was hastily swapped out of a 2017 Cadillac Escalade and had been sitting on his shop floor for about a year. Someone guessed that it potentially “dropped a valve” but no one had any idea. I was hoping that maybe it just had a common AFM lifter issue and that I would score one of my dream engines totally free. Nothing in life ever...

L33 with 799 head but I go 862 head more power 5:34
Nobody asked but here’s a fun fact. Chrysler LX cars, being the 300, Magnum, and Chargers, do not employ locking steering columns.
That little carb on that 350 is an abomination!
I'll stick to my LS motors cause them direct injection motors are 🚮.
1975 Chevy Monza was only offered with a 262 V8 with a two barrel carburetor. Yes it looks like a 350 but it isn't. Mine had a four speed transmission. That one looks factory.
@@stacysanders-w3e you may want to check Wikipedia
I had a 79 305 plain Jane. I built the 305 with comp cam, heads cut to 1.94 intake, ported. Kept the factory intake and exhaust manifolds. Dual exhaust. Painted it 76 Corvette yellow. Added spoilers from Dobi. 60 series 13"s. A guy built me an awesome turbo 350. Would bark the 1-2 shift everytime you were a little on it. It had a strong mid range pull with those high gears. Topped out about 135. This was early 90's. It couldn't beat an IROC in the 1/4 but it could pass it easy from a rolling start. Fun car. Wonder it didn't get me arrested. And the brakes? Yeah they wre good to about 75mph.😮
I would love to find a Monza. Next door neighbor had a Mirage. I would do it differently. A complete teardown.
I need 2 6.0 and 2 4l80 do you have any

Watching your vid got me excited to get a old pro street vega back on the rd...started looking for parts and found most everything stock wise at napa or any local chains are listed as unavailable...all disco...bummer
if i remember the 75 i bought for parts had a special water pump with a bolt hole on top and the exhaust manifolds were special esp the driver side to clear the steering
for my vega 71 i simply used 75 monza rotors marked them with blue dye and re drilled them to chevy 5 lug pattern, ive heard a company called moser does this also
Needs a tail fin.
Strang dude
Was it easy to fit this with low alternator bracket ? I have -72 elco and want to replace my alternator like that , i have vortec 6200 L9H, but my engine is not ready yet so i cant fit it right now.. i wil have electric steering pump from volvo or etc , so i though could i replace my alternator to low like yours. Like replace the steering pump with alternator.
i use to have a 79 sunbird with the buick 231 v6 put a good intake and a 650 carb and race v8 with it and win a lot of races with it
Pull the steering shaft to pull the driver side plugs that and a couple extensions on the 3/8 drive ratchet and plugs are changed
Don't know where you got your info that all 75's were hatchbacks but it is incorrect. I had a 75 coupe 265 V8 auto car. And, the original owner was correct about the original engine being rebuilt. It just forgot to tell you it is in some other car, because it was sent back as a core when the goodwrench motor was installed in this one. Lol.
You are super knowledgeable about these vehicles, learnt alot from you.
I like how excited Travis gets when he talks about these engines, it greatly contributes to how knowledgeable he is. Reminds me of myself 20 years ago when I started working on motorcycles.
Once you get new exhaust system. Its gonna sound even better
The most important thing to do is immediately start destroying stuff
Correct!
The l96 6.0 rec headed engines were flex fuel and have the 3412 injectors that are 50 lb. They will support quite a bit of power.
@@davidreed6070 apparently those are only in the 40’s which is still quite high. I’ve read that only the LSA and L94 (flex 6.2) are the 50lb big boys. Once I get a set and test them myself I’ll know
They bore those 5.3s and press sleeves with a 4.125 bore and build a 427 out of then.
@@davidreed6070 only the 2010 and later blocks. There’s a specific casting number. The LM4/L33/LH6 all still have the 5.7 non-Siamese wet sleeves
If that is an ls2, aluminum block 6.0 im jealous.
@@davidreed6070 both of these are 5.3’s, but now I do have an aluminum 6.0
@travisblack417 I have 3 six liters two l96s with rec heads, one day ill score an aluminum block.
@@davidreed6070 one of my newer videos has me inspecting the aluminum 6.0 I’m talking about. Hybrid SUV’s seem to be the best place to get them.
About how much hp with that setup?
@@MingoMendoza-nk9zv should be like 400hp to the flywheel exactly.
@ very nice! Sounds awesome.. I’m getting ready to rebuild a 6.0 and I’m putting a carb on it and looking for cams. Thanks
@ nice
you should have used chevy S-10 front suspension , that would have given you 5 lug and stronger springs and its all chevy so easy parts shopping.
Not trying to nit puck but i think some of your plug wires are melting on the exhaust manifold - i would either route them under or get some plug wire separators that are held in place w the valve cover bolts - have a great x mas
Put a posi in it and have fun!!
Okay no big deal slow down a little?
That is a crazy tall gear - 3:73 would be perfect - that 350 runs like a top
Headers and dual exhaust! And a nice mild cam because im sure the valve springs are pretty weak- but you have done a great job w the monza !
You are gonna have to go down a few jet sizes for that 125 hp beast !
The 100lbs off the nose is a great idea - you can probably tell a difference when you smash the pedal
Gm 3 pin coolant do you what gm vehicle use them and would it fit the 6.0 head?
What size carb with that cam?

The problem we ran into in the nineties is that they ran too hot with the three fifty
Please tell me, what are the differences in the wiring of the lm4 and lh6 engines? Can I use the lh6 wiring for my lm4 and what changes should I make? (I have the wiring of the lm7 engine as a donor) Thank you in advance.
@@СергейПискунов-р9й it all depends on what your goal actually is. Is this a swap? What year specifically is your LH6? I pretty much never recommend using LM7 wiring as a donor.
@travisblack417 I want to make a swap. I have envoy 2002 with dead inline 6 and lm4 engine with stuff for it, but without wiring. Also i have lm7 and lh6 wiring, but i couldn't find original wiring for lm4(
So the problem lies with the fact that the inline 6 stuff is quite different than any of the v8’s. Doing a v8 swap in a trailblazer regardless of year is a pretty big pain in the ass. You’ll have to pick which PCM version you’re going to go with, and then how to pin it out from there. P01 is 01-02, P59 is 03-04, E40 is 05-06, E38 is 07+. You can see where this gets challenging.
@@travisblack417 Ah shit .. iv got 2005 pcm, so it is for lh6 i think( the swap will be harder, than i thought
@@СергейПискунов-р9й I’m pretty sure the 2002 specifically (and the other years with the inline 6) use a totally different PCM unit than all the v6 and v8 trucks. The only way I’d assume you’d make this thing run again and seem close to normal is to basically make a 2003 LM4 setup and have it be happy with the 2002 body control module. I’m not familiar with the intricacies of the factory body modules and systems because I never v8 swap late model vehicles, I only steal the power trains I want and throw the rest away.

Can I use a lm7 wire harness on a l59? I know there’s sensors on l59 but I really just want gas only
@@fsu3784 the LM7 and L59 are 100% mechanically identical. There are zero different sensors on the engines. The different RPO code is purely due to the different size injectors and tuning in the original vehicle.
@ thank you! I got a 5.3 from junkyard yesterday and it’s messing with me looking up parts for what it says it’s out of. An 04 avalanche and when I plug that information in nothing fits and I can’t understand why. Even cams. Not a single cam that should fit does. It’s weird
