Uber vs Lyft: Which one is ACTUALLY cheaper?
As a real estate agent here I travel around the city a lot, including using Uber or Lyft. I switched to using Lyft shortly after I moved here because I thought it was cheaper, and in today's video I decided to run some tests to see if I was correct. I hope you enjoy!

Knowing nothing about either are these flat rates or metered. How do yellow cabs factor into this.
Unfortunately I don't feel like I can accurately factor in cabs. The few times I've used them I was given a quote, then it was almost doubled by the time I got to my destination. Ever since then I don't trust them unless I have no other option!
I switched from Uber to Lyft a couple of years ago, and I have never looked back. I had an older iPhone at the time, and when Uber upgraded their interface, I was closed out of the app because of my operating system incompatibility. I've never had any issues with Lyft. Like you, I don't drive, and so I rely on public transit and ride shares.
Lyft has treated me very well since I switched, and I haven't looked back either! I was very happy when the numbers supported my decision to switch
Geez, my comment didn't post from earlier. I loved the video and was asking if you could explain what each category column meant. I assumed most of them. Regular would be a regular car, black would be a more upscale ride, xl would be for more passengers/luggage etc. and I was completely blank on the wait and save. I don't use ride share apps at all so this is all new to me. When I was in NYC we just hailed yellow cabs, it was easier and we never had to go far, so it didn't completely break the bank. Thanks for the in depth work you put into this spreadsheet...that was a lot of info.
You are correct on what you thought each of the categories are, and wait and save is just a regular ride but if you're willing to wait longer you can save some money! Most of the time my Lyft will still come in 5 minutes. When I have meetings I tend to get there very early anyways, so the extra 5-10 minute wait isn't a problem!
@@hayley_bailiff Thank you for answering so quickly!
What an excellent video--perfect narration, camera shots, selection. (I'm not in the market but I sure like to look.)
I appreciate the kind words!
Hey Hayley - very useful and interesting video. I would surmise that if you live and work in NYC (especially Manhatten) owning a car would bring on heavily unjustifiable expenses (Car insurance, Parking, Gas, & car Loan payments).
Owning a car in NYC is very costly. I only know 2 folks here who still have their car and they both live in parts of Brooklyn where it's slightly easier to find parking (not very easy, but slightly easier) and they really only use the car when they're leaving the city. If you try to use the car to run errands you likely won't have anywhere to park while at the errand, and you will lose your parking space by home (assuming you are using street parking and not paying for a lot)
Hayley - are there normally any restrictions on a tenants painting these "white walls" a different colour - or - any stipulations on how you can hang things (pictures, mirrors, shelves, etc) on them (nails - tape only)? To the folks outside of NYC these prices and corresponding floorplans - and - sizes, remain, a culture shock!
General rule of thumb is you can paint the walls but you're supposed to return the walls back together the original color before you move out. If you don't it's possible the landlord could take part of your security deposit, but they probably won't since they need to paint for the next tenant anyways! And yes, you're allowed to hang things.
I love your personality. You had me cracking up.😂😂😂 as I stand in my small studio apartment in New York. I give it a 4.5. It’s 600 ft.² but no wash and dryer. And two walk-in closets with all the amenities in the building.
Closet space and building amenities are still a nice perk!
Let's get Hayley that 100k plaque so she can get an apt with a W/D.
You're so sweet! Thank you for always supporting my channel!
Haha😅! Ok, I am soo fine with either "any who" or "any how" That made me laugh!!! Haha! So, in looking at the apartmenta this time the 2 Bedrock at $6000 plus was to cute and the washer & dryer wins for me inside apartments all the time!!! The view looking out is gorgeous. And in the second building that one bedroom at $4000 plus is cute as well. The washer & dryer wins in looking at apartments in general. These two apartments win for me. Thank you again for sharing great apartment there in NY.
Thank you for accepting all of my anywhos!
@hayley_bailiff You are welcome. ☺
Cool reviews, thanks, and your rating system is great.
The 1st corner unit one bedroom shown was perfection. A bit pricey but seemingly with it considering the comps in the vicinity.
This particular management company uses pricing software that updates daily to try and match the market
I d rather but a townhouse in Parsippany, nj for the price and commute and live in these cramped spaces
I preferred the studio with the separate kitchen area, I'm not a big fan of the "hallway kitchen" that is right at the front door as soon as you walk in.....anyhoo (lol) my favorite apartment was the 2 bedroom for $6000.00. With two bathrooms it makes getting a roomie so much better.
Love the added anyhoo lol. I laughed when I got that person's comment hating on the word anyways. My quirks + my knowledge are why I get repeat business, and why folks who are scared about moving to the city feel comfortable enough to reach out in the first place, so my anyhoos arent going away anytime soon!
Love your comment about Meijer!
I always appreciate an apartment with a separate kitchen, which made these units appealing-even the studios. I currently live in a studio with a Pullman-style kitchen where the appliances are simply pushed up against the wall. I was recently in New York over the holidays, and I stayed in a hotel near Hell's Kitchen/Clinton. I was surprised by the number of new rental properties, which you might explore in another video. From my hotel room window, I was looking across the street at a building called ARO. It looked amazing from the exterior. If I had had an extra hour, I would have stopped in for a tour.
I unfortunately cannot post apartments from the management company that runs that building! They are very strict about agents posting their units on social media
the kitchen is too big - they could've expanded the living area
Just my opinion, but I think in-unit washer and dryer is overrated. My apartment building has a very large, very nice laundry room, and I love being able to do all my laundry in one go, rather than doing it load by load.
Consider me envious that your building has a laundry room at all!
I understand what you mean when you refer to amenities but do any of these places you show include utilities (electricity, water, internet, gas). I am curious how that all works in the giant buildings. In general if those are not included how much more should one expect to pay for utilities in the big city? Anyway, love your rating system it helps to give perspective to use suburbanites.
Heat is always provided and typically there's no surcharge for water. You usually have to pay gas and electricity. To put things into perspective for my studio apartment I pay about $100-$120 a month in electricity (I work primarily from home and run a space heater or ac a ton) and $20 a month on gas!
The in unit washer and dryer ❤🎉
I'm jealous!
Hayley, in your opinion what determines if a building of rental apartments stays rental or converts to condominiums?
Born and raised NY’er here and I’d be very reluctant to take the subway nowadays. Hopefully it will become much safer.
Either way can be extremely profitable. It just depends on if you're trying to build a property portfolio for generations, or you want to turn it over for profit quickly to get onto your next project!
@@hayley_bailiff Thanks
It generally comes down to occupancy. As long as a rental property can maintain the desirable percentage of tenants, the building will remain a rental. When it dips below that level for an extended period of time, then the property management will be more likely to sell off the units as condominiums.
Well I’m thinking 🤔 this would be perfect for me
Pretty cool actually. I'm also a Houston native. Been there my whole life (GO COOGS) yes and went to UH. But I've been in Jersey City now for 6 months. Big change but I appreciate the new environment. I would love to live alone one day
Hello dear, I hope you’re doing well! I recently checked out your RUclips channel and I think you’re doing a great job. There are a few things I’ve seen work well for other channels that might help improve your visibility and audience reach. If you’d like, I’d be happy to share some strategies to help boost your channel’s performance.
Awesome content! I was watching your video and thought that you could easily boost your video views by improving your metadata (titles, tags, and descriptions). It’s a simple tweak, but it could help you grow faster! I’d be happy to share some insights with you if you’re interested.
Odd layout. Looks like, if you are on the second floor of the PH, your only exit/entrance, is through the walk in closet. Thank you for the tour.
That is the old entrance to the top floor unit in the closet! I've seen this a lot in duplexes that weren't originally built as a duplex
Who pays the taxes they are very high What the main job source? Retires are leaving the state and there are no doctors they don’t stay either
Who pays the taxes depends on which building you are talking about, as some of the tenants have a triple net lease. And as for retirees leaving, that happens in every state that gets cold during the winter. I'm from Michigan and plenty of folks retire from there down to Florida or they become snowbirds. All I know is the retirees I hung out with in VT had no plans of permanently leaving!
I'm moving there!! So beautiful 😍 Also - I had to say it - nice timelapse!
Back in 1974 my girlfriend and I visited a guy that we had met in Cornell I think and got invited to come to New York City. When we got there, there was a buzzer to talk into and the building from the outside looked like a factory. He said he’d be right down came down in the elevator. He put a key in his floor number in the elevator, which I had never seen before and when we stepped off the elevator, we were in his rental apartment….no hallway It was the whole floor. I wa in shock. He had built temporary walls to divide rooms and that it was very long and narrow unit. There were windows at both ends. If I had to recall, I would probably say it was 2000 sq feet or more. I think I asked him how much he paid ….now rents back then would go for maybe about 900 a month for a nice one and I think he said he paid 1000 for the place but that included heat and cooling and everything . I was impressed. The apartments now I am not impressed.🇨🇦
So nice!
Thanks!
Wow, such beautiful scenery and such a stark contrast to the concrete jungle of NYC. I live about 10 minutes away from a gorgeous valley like this but the lake is very shallow, no watercraft allowed. I loved the fall colors!
I'm so glad you were able to watch this before it goes live on my channel! I know that's supposed to be one of the perks of you paying for membership but I think this is the first time you've been able to see it before it goes live to the public in a few hours
@@hayley_bailiff Yes, this was the first video. I don't get notifications on my phone so it's hit and miss but I check usually once or twice a day to see if there's anything new.
Hi. I recognize this building and live here. Definitely join the tenants union because unfortunately there are alot of problems with the buildings and unlawful practices by the landlord going on.
Good to know! Olivia was planning on moving in with a friend a few months after this was filmed, but I'll let her know in case she renewed
The yellow that you put at the bottom of the screen to show the ratings completely takes away from the look of the apartments. It’s very distracting.
This was my first video with the rating system, so I was still figuring out how I planned on incorporating it editing wise. As my apartment tour videos progress you'll see the ratings area gets smaller!
@ other than that, your video was amazing. It was very concise and your rating seem very fair.
As a villager, the prices are really frightening, especially as you have so little space available. I will certainly visit New York one day, but it would all be too small for me to live in. Even the more expensive apartments, are often impractical and don't offer much space for hobbies and extensive collections. I have about 15,000 Blu-Rays and 4,000 video games. In New York it would be impossible to find such a large and affordable apartment to store them properly in display cases and shelves.
One of my favorite movies is "You've Got Mail," and one thing I always wondered was how Kathleen (Meg Ryan) could afford that apartment in the Upper West Side?!?!
I'm not sure how she afforded it in you've got mail, but I know in Friends apparently the reason Monica had such a bargain down in the village was because she inherited a rent controlled apartment!
In Dallas I have a 2 bedroom, 2 bath, 1,350 square foot apartment on the second floor (there are only 2 floors). I also have a 2 car garage under me. $2,375 per month.
OVERPRICED and frankly claustrophobic ! Give me my Long Island place any day !
hard pass - sorry
Come on jump cuts!!! ❤ the edits girlikins
I honestly like your style. You just get to the point, keep your rating system consistent and simple, and don't walk around slamming everything you can touch and trying to imply electrical outlets and heating units are flexes. Well done, subscribed.
Why are rents so high?
The views are Incredible ❤❤.... me ,personally.....I need more sq footage for that type of money .
I recently subscribed and I love this channel. Not pretentious and I like you cover real estate but other off the beaten paths as well. Great apt and price for NY almost impossible enjoy! ❤
I love this! You ladies are great 🤍
If you can afford that you can afford a mortgage !!!!
Thank you for your continued content and showings of freat properties there in New York. And Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you. 🎅 🥂 🎄 😊
