Christina Aguilera’s voice has the most varied distortion sounds I’ve ever heard in a single singer. The level of colour selection that woman has is absolutely unbelievable 🔥 She does growl, rasp, grit, breathiness, fry and mixes all of them on demand. A lot of people don’t like it because she uses it on genres that are unusual for those sounds, but I like that she goes full on rock and doesn’t give a damn about it. I’d recommend watching her live rendition of “Beautiful” at CNN Heroes from a few years ago: it’s a masterpiece of vocal distortion while an orchestra plays behind her.

I love it when someone says something so casually and it’s a massive lightbulb moment for me. When you mentioned that the false chords are the muscles that help out with swallowing, I reflexively swallowed and I felt the squeeze. I mean …. Total “duh” moment, but I’d never actually FELT my false chords so clearly before. Immediately I was able to follow along with the exercises and purposely engage those muscles. Definitely a bit of an odd sensation, but I know by now that just doing a few minutes in my regular practice will have me being able to call on them in no time. It’s astounding how quickly our brain dials into these teeny tiny little muscles in our vocal tract. You can go a lifetime never being aware of them at all but as soon as you “find” them, your brain creates that feedback loop IMMEDIATELY. So awesome. Thank you so much! What fun 😃

Kurt, you are the best instructor I've ever come across on RUclips. I've thought that this kind of vocal distortion was simply inaccessible to my voice and after watching this you've reignited my imagination of what I'm able to achieve. I feel like doors are opening to me the more I watch your content and wish I lived in NYC to come to one of these sessions.

I need help with this. I can add rasp with no effort in middle or low notes, but it's impossible for me to do it with high notes, when I'm in my mix o head voice my throat opens and I only can make strong and connected sound, but totally clean. For example, I can add rasp to the whole sentence "devil always makes me think twice", but it's imposible for me to add it in the second long and high "deeeevil", my throat opens and I can't keep my folds together. Is there any way to practise to achieve this? Thanks!

That´s because he doesn´t explain everything distortion related here (wich is normal since he said he only started doing this recently). There are many layers to vocal distortion, you need to learn how to distort on your vocal break and fry distortion. Singers like Kurt Cobain (nirvana) or Chester Bennington (Linkin Park) used this kind of distortion. False chord distortion as shown on this video is very limited, needs to be used wisely or it won´t sound good. James Hetfield from Metallica used a lot of this distortion but it´s far from the best. This is why not every singer can use epic distortion that gets written in the books of music history... Try to play with your vocal break on those high notes you sing clean. Force the "crack" and play on that zone, you will be able to add distortion with it.. Listen to Nirvana - Where Did you Sleep last night on MTV Unplugged on the final chorus or Nirvana - About a girl on MTV unplugged too. That´s how you use distortion on really high notes.

This is beautiful. It's still imperative to watch the whole video to avoid pitfalls and to interpret everything going on in the first 3 seconds, but after that, you have all you need right there as soon as you hit play.

Can this be done in a light mix, or head voice? If I try it on a G4 (for example), I feel like I need the body of the vocal cords engaged, and not just the output edge of the cord (head voice).
