  • Laryngeal movement in singing is necessary and beneficial. Contemporary singers will often use high larynx positions for brighter and lighter vocal qualities. Classical singers frequently use low larynx positions for darker and richer vocal qualities. And the neutral larynx position is foundational in all styles of singing because it helps us to achieve our most natural, unaffected sound.
In this video, vocal coach Kurt Wolf demonstrates how to achieve subtle changes in larynx position which can offer both technical and stylistic advantages.
Be sure to check out our other tutorial videos in this series which cover singing with a neutral, a high, and low larynx condition

I know the larynx should stay stable for singing. However, I would like to know if it is possible for the larynx to violently bob up and down without tension while singing?😊

The larynx staying stable = staying still. It will always rise with pitch. It has to as the chords are stretching thinner.

I know the larynx will rise and lower with pitch, I just wanted to know if intensely rapid bobbing, rocking, and stretching were all possible without tension.

Sounds like what you're talking about is yodeling. When done correctly, there shouldn't be any tension.

@@znmnky13 You mean yodeling can make the larynx go crazy without causing tension? If so, then I’m all in. Therefore, for future vocal projects, mainly as a singer-songwriter, I plan to incorporate yodel into my songs. However, I must mention that it will be a rapid yodel that nearly mimics vibrato.

@caleguillory5451 I'm not the authority on yodeling but I believe it's like flipping in and out of head voice in a quick controlled manner. I'm sure there are vids here on YT. Be careful and good luck!

Thanks for sharing how we can control our larynx movements when we sing high or low voice exercises. I enjoyed watching your singing class demonstration in this video.
