Ranger fuel leak or busted brake line? S2E5
The Ranger has some issues that need some attention. What I thought was a fuel leak turned out to be a busted brake line. I make new hard lines for the first time.

The Ranger gets a new Tank: Ranger Rescue E3
These 4 cylinders 5speed don’t die I have a 1989 ford ranger 2.3l 5 speed over 500k miles had it for 18 years still running great
500k!! I would say you got your money’s worth on that one.
Wish I could get a Ford Ranger like this. Wanted one, however ended up with a Chevy Silverado. I much prefer Ford cars and trucks, especally Ford Ranger trucks. Small trucks are more my speed.
My grandpa ordered that truck new in 1988. It wasn’t so much that he loved Fords but more because it was the cheapest truck you could buy. The smallest engine with a manual transmission and no power steering, power brakes or AC. But it is a good truck.
that black stuff was just radiator stop-leak product working as intended
It could have been but I don’t know of any stop leak being used on it. It was thicker than anything I have ever seen before.
Hey Rob --- I've been watching just haven't been commenting on some of my fav YTers lately. This Is just the Video I needed for my 2002 Ranger. Think the flex hose is leaking over the rear Diff. My quick fix was puttin a nail in the line fitting out of the master Cylinder. lol Don't drive much. I been looking at Eastwoods flaring tool similar to yours & using copper-nickel flex line. Couldn't get a box of Various couplings at the auto parts store. My only vehicle so if its down a while can't get to the parts store. lol What BRAND is your Flaring tool you bought? I'm in a Dilema. I don't use Amazon or Rock Auto. Use E-bay & Parts Store. I have to have ALL Parts ready to go to get it done in an afternoon. Keep Pushin On I'm still with you.
Thanks for continuing to watch. Much appreciated and I am glad to hear from you again. The brand I bought was Lainkeen. I ordered it and the hard line plus fitting all off the jungle website. 😉 I wanted all the parts on hand for the job to save me from running to the parts store a hundred times. I did buy the flex hose from a local parts store.
wow 4 years it doesnt seem that long ago we loaded that sucker up . i look foward to your vid updates cant wait to see it finished
Gary! I am so glad you are watching the progress even though it is very slow. And yes it was 4 years ago.
@@robsrestorationgarage you doing great ive got one at the house ive had for quite some time now and not touched it yet lol
I'll repeat what @Bugeye23 said. "All the reasons you mentioned of why you chose the Midget were all the reasons I bought my Austin Healey Bugeye." I'm restoring a 1958.Bugeye on my channel.
I am going to check out your channel!!
Great work Rob. Your story is very similar to mine with regards to the learning as you go! That's why I started welding on the floors! Love the RRG shirt by the way.
@EconoboxGarage You are the first to notice the RRG t-shirt! Email me at robsrestogarage@gmail.com with your address and shirt size and I will send you one.
All the reasons you mentioned of why you chose the Midget were all the reasons I bought my Austin Healey Bugeye.
What year is your Austin Healey?
@@robsrestorationgarage On paper it’s a 1961. Bugeyes were all built between 1958 to 1960, and several from 1960 were tagged as a 1961.
Mine is titled as a 67 but the manufacture date is 1965. I hope your build is coming along nicely.
Hey Rob, I'm really enjoying watching your videos from over here in the UK. You're doing a great job. Can't believe your skills for a first restoration! These little cars have bags of character and are a hoot to drive. Keep the faith brother 👏 Richard
Thanks for the compliment! I have definitely learned a lot and I can’t wait to drive it
Rob, I had the same problem with a quarter panel on a Monty Carlo, I used heat , pounded out the low spot proud then layed a wet rag over the spot to shrink the metal to stiffened it. That worked in my situation. Same concept I guess. It definitely takes patience, as you know but you'll be driving it by summer! Keep at it!
I think the basic concept is to shrink the metal which then allows you to shape it. I honestly probably should have spent even more time on it. Thanks for the encouragement to keep working!
Good work Rob. Another great video. Like you I got into this with zero experience. I’m a couple of years behind you and my videos aren’t as professional as yours but my skills are developing slowly with the help of your videos. Thank you.
Thank you for the encouragement. I went and found your channel and subscribed. Just think…once you get finished with your project, you will have manufactured an entire car!
@@robsrestorationgarage 😂 Pretty much! Not too many reliable original fixed points to work from so all I can do is hope it works out as good as or better than the original!
There’s light at the end of the tunnel in regards to panel work… Getting paint on the midget will be a huge moral booster 👍 keep up the good work 👍👍
Just getting the car in primer will feel good!!!
just checking on ya my friend hope yall didnt much damage from the hurricane
@garygarner1095 hey thanks for checking on me. Everything is fine for us. We went without power for several days but no damage. Cleanup in our community will take months. We are only an hour drive from Western North Carolina where they suffered complete destruction.
@@robsrestorationgarage glad to hear yall are ok and yes sir ive seen some vids from friends over in ashville working its horrible
Hey Rob, where did you order the tank from?
I ordered the tank from carparts.com
Really glad to see another video on the midget. Watching your videos gave me the confidence to tackle the restoration on my own midget. Unfortunately being a UK car its turned out to be much worse than I thought. But I'll take it slowly and learn as I go. Can't wait to see more updates and progress on your project.
I am glad it is motivating. Often I find I hit a snag in the project and I have to make myself move forward. Keep taking steps. It will be worth it in the end.
Had this exact issue in my identical 1993 white Miata. Turns out, if you don't care about the airbag, there is a simple fix. Unplug the connectors from the airbag control module, pull the plastic inserts out of the connectors on the car side (this allows some pins to short together), and no airbag light comes on, no trouble codes reported. I did that many years ago now, and I did actually pull my old module out which was painful to say the least. I opened it up, and it did have the normal problem for them of the electrolytic capacitors leaking all over the board. I tried replacing the caps, but the board was fried already at that point. I have a replacement Ford module out of a '93 Mustang that I will be trying out this weekend to see if that fixes the issue. It is the version that has the battery built in, so no need for the second blue box that is needed for the stock module. Lots of places have said it works perfectly that way, we shall see.
Let me know if it works. My replacement module will eventually go out and I will need another solution.
@@robsrestorationgarage The Mustang module was likely bad as well, I did manage to source a replacement from a Miata for far too much money, and it works like a champ. One thing on yours I noticed is that your airbag light does not come on at all, it should come on showing the self check is occurring, then turn off. If it doesn't blink after that self check, you are good to go. Mine is now working properly once again.
Rob, thanks for the update! Thought you might have given up on the Midget! I have the same problem. My Midget has been up on blocks since October 2023 ! Started with the whole brake system rebuild then noticed the clutch master and slave cylinders leaking. Started working on that also. Got all the new parts, but not the time! Still haven't got back to putting it together because of being pulled away with other time sensitive priorities that were going to snow ball this year!
Life can definitely get in the way. I feel blessed to finally have some garage time.
awesome progress on the midget im excited to see you get it on the road again
Me too!! I still have many videos ahead before that happens.
Really pleased to see more work on the midget 👍 keep up the good work, very much looking forward to seeing more progress.
Thanks. More stuff coming.
Glad to see you back working on the Midget! Learn as you go is probably the best way to learn!
Thanks for the encouragement! The good thing about having the car in the main garage is I have to walk by it every day so no forgetting it’s there.
Great to see more content! I used several cans of the Eastwood Chassis Paint in satin black on my Austin Healey Bugeye. It’s the best paint in my opinion. I painted some undercarriage and steering and suspension components.
The painting process will be another hurdle with a lot of learning. But I will also get to buy some more tools!
just keep chipping at it. I started restoring my Midget in 2007, Body work and mechanicals all done, but still in primer. I've been driving it like this for the last 5 years. I really need to finish the paint and put all the chrome back on.
I figure I just need to keep plugging along. I will get there eventually, right?
Well, well, a blast from the past. Good to see you back on task. Block sanding; you gotta love it.
You didn’t think I quit did you?
I just binge watched every episode. Great job with the welding! It must have been a nice feeling to put it all back together. Can’t wait to see it painted! My personal two favorite Midget colors is that mustard yellow and white. 👍
Thanks for watching. I have had a crazy summer but I have 4 weeks coming up in September and October to put some good hours in the garage so more episodes are coming
So if it works correctly the air bag light shouldn’t be illuminated at all even when u just open the ignition like the other lights ? Or is it supposed to to turn on temporarily
I don’t think the airbag light comes on at all even during the start up process
I have a stock 93 Miata . My air bag light turns on when the ignition is turned on , then turns off after a few seconds. It’s my understanding that if it never turns on it is not working.
@@The44smileyes you are correct. A lot of people just disconnect the sensor or light which means the airbag doesn’t work. I wanted mine to work as it should which is the reason I went the route I did. If yours turns off you should be fine.
@@robsrestorationgarage It should absolutely turn on when you start it, then turn off and stay off. That is what mine does now that I replaced my module, and what it used to do before mine went bad. I would be concerned that your replacement module is not in fact working correctly.
its looking good im excited to see it finished
I am excited to see it finished too…I hope it gets finished
@@robsrestorationgarage youve done awesome on it dont give up thats such a cool car
Great help. I have a 1963 Midget that I am just starting on. It has been stripped down to the body. Need to build a rotisserie. Can one be built from wood ?
I suppose you could build one from wood. Another option would be to use two engine stands which you can pick up pretty cheap and then modify them. The shell isn’t that heavy so the engine stands would handle the weight.
I have a 1993 Miata. The air bag just started flashing on and off when I drove it home from being detailed yesterday. Any suggestions. I live in Cincinnati area and would love to reach you directly if possible. Thank you.
Hey James. I am from the Cincinnati area originally. Email me at robsrestogarage@gmail.com
Glad to see you back at. I'm with you about the the Cold. I've got a wood stove with a fan blowing on it. Ok for 30 degree days. Cluster & other projects slowing my motivation. Warmer days ahead lol Take your time now. You're working on the *Eye Catching* stuff that will show up after painting. You're Almost There. "Keep Pushin' On"
Thanks for the encouragement! The process is slow
I cannot stand using Bondo. A friend of mine did a restoration on a Shelby KR 500. Just body tools. When he was done the body was perfect. Perfect body lines and gaps. He wanted to paint it and we all said no. He then clear coated it to show the exquisite body work
That sounds amazing! I wish I was that good. It gives me something to work towards.
Thank you for your efforts to update us. I have wondered how your project was going. Looking good! (This *IS* the Bondo sculpting phase, after all...)
This is a hard phase because it takes so much time. I am not doing instructional videos…you would have to know what you are doing for that and who wants to watch hours of sanding?! Thanks for watching and for the encouragement!
i gotta say using that dustless sanding block is like cheating. Where's the fun in that? i want to see you completely covered in dust.
Haha it probably doesn’t sand as well but definitely keeps the dust down. BTW when are your in town for you reunion?
Great to see you back on RUclips with the midget 👍 v-much enjoyed the video, keep up the good work.
Thanks. I took off more time than I had planned but glad to be back at it
Thanks so much for this! I have a White 93 NA as well and recently I've had a three blink code that turned into a four blink code and I'm worried it's going to blow a fuse. Do you have any suggestions? Looks like an s-sensor from what I've seen online but I'm not sure if I should buy a whole new module or what not. Thank you!
You are correct that a 4 is a faulty sensor. You could replace the sensor which I think is in the bumper. This is different from the control module that I replaced.
@@robsrestorationgarage ooo shoot okay! I was thinking it was the same one you replaced. You saved me all that hasle. Thank you!
Hello need your favour please I m looking for front & back mudguards of this bike.
I would recommend looking online or calling a Honda dealership. They still make a lot of parts for these bikes
I have a white 93 NA, I'm the original owner. Kept it in the garage all this time. Mine has power steering and it's automatic. I just put a Cat Back exhaust in it along with a front grill and front air dam, some mud flaps and door sills. It sounds real sweet! I have the air bag issue as well. Took it into Mazada for a dignostic check several years ago. They no longer make that module and they set my car so the air bag light no longer blinks. Enjoy your Miata!
That is definitely one way to do it since the replacement modules are getting harder to find.
@@robsrestorationgarage It is also trivial to do. Unplug the module, pull a couple of plastic inserts on the vehicle side of the connector, and no airbag light ever again.
@@beauthestdanepartly I actually wanted my airbags to work if possible but if not then pull it all out
Is it point or converted into cdi?
It is still the original points system
Happy Birthday Mr. Rob. Glad to be a part of this restoration journey
@jessewhiten2017 Wow! My first YT Happy Birthday! Thanks man!
Rob You have a lot of patience I watched videos from 2 years ago You documented the build perfectly
Well thank you. It has been a slow process. I don’t have as much time to work on it as I would like. Some of those old videos were some poor quality. I have learned a lot with that too.
Did you order the seals through honda?
Yes. There were several options online but I ordered them from Honda. I was surprised they still made them.
im having the same issue with mt 1988 Ford Ranger, it has been sitting for a few months without starting, thanks for giving me some great ideas to work with.
I am glad it was helpful. I am planning to do a carb rebuild in the next few weeks because I don’t feel it is running quite right.
Awesome I’ll stay tuned. I disconnected the fuel line from manual pump and turned over key, if pump is working, should gas ⛽️ come from the fuel line? Thanks
@@onthegopowerwashprollc1077Yes. If you removed the line from the carburetor or at the pump, as long as it is after the fuel pump then you should see gas coming out. I did have to replace my fuel pump
Where did you disconnect the line?
@@robsrestorationgarage at the fuel pump
the chrome just kinda dissapeared off the front in the middle of the video. did you just drill out the rivets to remove it?
Are you talking about the grill? I unbolted it and took it out.
Amazing progress in 2 years Rob. I'm still tearing down this body shell I bought and revisiting your episodes for advice and inspiration. Since mine had 3 floors (the rusty original sandwiched between 2 sheets of steel) almost all potential datum points had been melted along with 60% of the flanges. Currently the entire floor is out along with all of the rear bulkhead, the drivers side sills and the outer and front footwell panels. I braced the thing but I'm now pretty sure it was twisted before. When I dry fit the outer footwell panel and inner sill and position them at a right angle and lined up with the A post tab (which as you found is a slow job to drill all the spot welds out) the jacking point is out by the best part of an inch, and if I use the jacking point as a datum and line everything up correctly the sill sticks out a half inch in front of where the front footwell panel should be! I'm now considering fitting a complete rear bulkhead to the back end of the car, dry fitting a whole floor to it and hoping it gives me reliable datum points to square everything up. Of course it may just fall apart if I have to remove the bracing bars! Ah well nothing ventured nothing gained and as you say gotta love the journey! Iain
Sounds like you have quite a challenge. I am not sure the original cars were spot on every time. Did you have to replace the crossmembers that established the jacking point? Sounds like that is what you are trying to build from which is your best choice. I realized that there is some flexibility in all of those pieces so you can gain an inch here or there. My outer footwell panel on the passenger side was exactly right because my holes to attach the front wing didn’t line up exactly. I ended up drilling out the whole a bit to make it work. This is why they call it an amateur restoration. Don’t give up. You will get it!
@@robsrestorationgarage The passenger side of the crossmember has been replaced previously but is all messed up. The drivers side is pretty rusted so will need a section replaced at least. I have a whole replacement and when I lay it on top of the current one and stick a couple of screw drivers through the holes in the mid section to line them up the new one is in a better place so I thought the original may have been pushed forward. However it appears to be at right angles to the front chassis rail so that's a bit confusing/worrying. I guess I need to play around with things for a while and see if I can figure it out. Definitely finding I spend more time thinking than doing which is probably a good thing.
@@IainTodd-t4rYes, you should be doing more thinking than doing, otherwise there will be a lot of redoing. It is better to be a sure as you possibly can be.
@@robsrestorationgarage Thinking led me to set up my laser which I bought with a view to using it to establish a midline down the car and measuring distances to key points on either side from that. However i just shone it from the middle of the passenger side jacking point over the middle of the centre holes in the crossmember to the drivers jacking point confirming that it is indeed half a diameter too far forward, so it looks like the crossmember is the problem after all. I think I'm relieved?
@@IainTodd-t4r knowing is half of the solution.
Mr.Rob, nice to meet you. It was very helpful. thank you. I'm looking forward to the completion of MIDGET's restoration. I'm running MIDGET1500 in Japan. I'm always repairing some part. I will use this as a reference in the future. So you'll excuse me.
I am glad you found my channel. I hope the videos are helpful.
Great update Rob. Glad to see you're making some solid progress!
Thanks for the encouragement. I am plugging along.
Since you have that door pretty level, consider a rubber sanding block, it'll be faster removing filler, and will give a better 'hand feel's for the high and low spots.120 or 150 grit when you're close then, hit it with primer, re-sand with a higher grit. that Bondo shrinks, LIGHT COAT application of glazing puddy too thick will cause paint to eventually crack cause it's thick primer. We used to call it, 'red lead glaze'. Doin a great job Bud !
How long of a sanding block do you think I should use? I kind of like the 12 inch length on the door.
@@robsrestorationgaragei would suggest you get two or three 12" dura-blocks, you can cut one or two of your dura-blocks to whatever size you need, i bought two and cut one up to make a 4" and 8" dura-block
that is a great idea. I have seen where people use a cut up pool noodle!
@@robsrestorationgarage a cut up pool noodle is good, but even better are pipe insulators, they are usually made of denser foam so they hold there shape a little better over the highs and lows
@@Initial_GopnikGreat suggestion because it is pretty hard to find pool noodles this time of year. Thanks so much!

there will allways be a market for these little trucks.when maintained from the begining.they will run damn near forever.& parts are still widely available.& as simple as it gets mechanically.seen several with near 300k miles.usually highway commuter 2 wheel drives with 2.3 5 speeds.ford did their homework well on these.
I agree. This truck is about a basic as you can get. I plan on keeping it for a long time. I plan to rebuild the carburetor this winter.
