Katie Makes Stuff

I choose to make stuff. Not because it is easy, but because it is hard. And because I am a crazy person who needs to be doing something or I'll turn into a potato. But potatoes are delicious, so I guess this is quite a conundrum.

Is this going to be the saddest year of my life? Maybe...but I'm hoping all the extra free time and saved money will make up for the loss of one of my favorite hobbies. I'm challenging myself (and you if you want to participate) to follow a few simple rules to hopefully break myself of some bad habits and become a more frugal crafter. And throughout the year, I have monthly sub-challenges sched...

The Perfect Dark Academia sitting room for my old lady bones

My dining room was the worst room in my house, so I painted it the perfect black-green, packed it with the best knick-knacks, and turned it into the best hang out space. Really, it's the place where I can keep adding ALL THE THINGS to and it just makes sense. Full maximalist if you will. I'm usually not big on interior design or home renovations, but this has inspired me to attack all my other ...

Halloween-ifying Christmas Decor because there's no reason to have Xmas decorations out in September
Просмотров 2,3 тыс.3 месяца назад
Halloween is the superior holiday. You get to eat a bunch of garbage, dress as whatever you want, and you don't have to buy gifts for anyone. It's the exact opposite of Christmas. Also, why do stores have Xmas decor out on SEPTEMBER 26th??? Why can't we just enjoy one holiday at a time? Anyway, my way of protesting is to buy these decorations at full price and turn them into the perfect spooky ...

Painting a Deer Skull for My Dark Academia Decor
Sitting at my desk wrapped in an Electric Blanket, a jacket and a hat! LOL I'm so there with you on all of this!
I love your personality so much, ty for sharing❤
Aww, that's so sweet of you to say!
Thank you so much for this video. It is so discouraging when you want to start doing a thing and you look up videos only to be told "This is how you do the thing properly" and then they list a bunch of stuff you need or classes you need to take etc. I learned to sew in high school in the 90s. I have made a few dresses for myself, one being a 50s style dress for my MIL's (not ex MIL) wedding in early 2000s, and would love to do more (since trying to buy clothing that I like and fit properly. Starting simple doesn't always work for sewing or other crafts. I wanted to learn crochet for over a decade but could not wrap my head around it. Kept seeing "start with granny squares, scarves and blankets because they are simple" but they were soooooooo boring. I saw a reel with Elyse Meyers where she said if you want to learn crochet don't start with a granny square (especially if you are neurodivergent) start with something that excites you. Once I heard that I found a pattern I really wanted to make and within a few weeks was able to do it and it has been the only thing I have been able to consistently stick with. Doing things the proper way keep me stuck and from trying a thing.
Thank you!!! There's a time and place for the "proper way" and that's when you're required to follow the rules. No one is coming to my house to require me to follow sewing rules so I'm going to do what makes me happy. Keep making stuff your way and I hope you find joy in it!
Wishing you many sewing successes in 2025.
Awesome video, Love the ‘you will fail’. It is so true. I start with bedsheets with a new pattern, I don’t get too worried when I do fail and waste that ‘precious’ fabric
Exactly!! If I only used precious fabric, I'd be too nervous to get anything done. Bedsheets though, do not care if I mess them up!
A tip for the sewing kits, get fiberglass measuring tapes. They're only slightly more expensive on Wawak than the plastic ones, but they don't stretch. Wawak is a great source for good quality, inexpensive tools and notions if you're unable to get things secondhand.
Nice! I'll keep that in mind, thank you!
This came up on my fyp and love it. I rarely buy notions new and even when I couldnt find my (mountain) of zippers due to having stuff split over two states, I grabbed a couple from the op shop. And getting an older sewing machine is definitely a good idea!
I'll sometimes buy bags secondhand that are super beat up just for the zips or hardware (if it's really cheap).
I use a discord channel I made to track cool ideas, brainstorming, projects in the works, completed projects and expenses and time.
Great idea!! Love this!
I keep a sewing journal - I make notes of changes I make to the pattern, or where I used different techniques to the instructions, to make the next project with that pattern go more smoothly.
I imagine that's super helpful and interesting to reflect on as you go!
Did you glue your stamp to a wood block?
I glued it to a Styrofoam block and it just didn't work the way I'd hoped. I'm going to take it off and try again with wood
Been sewing for decades but this vlog has great advice and motivation…even for me! Thank you 🤸🏼
You're so welcome!!
This is wonderful, sage advice. I second the idea to "thrift" your notions, tools, and machines when possible. The previous generations took good care of their gear. A lot of it is American and European made. A lot of families will be grateful that Mom's sewing room contents is going to be put to good use.
I completely agree! To give something a new life just feels right and home sewing machines really aren't made how they used to be. Getting a solid machine and learning how to take care of it is such a cool experience!
The Helens closet tshirts and instructions really helped me to get my head around neck bands.
I'll definitely check it out. I WILL learn how to do this right this year, even if it's the only thing I learn!!
I really appreciate your outside the box thinking. I’m way too much a “rule” follower with hobbies and an over thinker so I really benefit from your thoughts and ideas. Also you’re interesting to listen to. ✌️
I feel like the more I worry about the "rules" the more I mess up. And sewing rules are just suggestions anyway...the sewing police aren't raiding my shop anytime soon (I hope!) 🤣
That tip about a sewing kit for each location you sew in is great. I have learned to keep craft supplies stored by project, not by type of item. For example, instead of storing all my punches in a bin, all my elastics in a different bin, etc., I put the ones I need in the bin with the traveller's notebook cover supplies I'm currently using.
I'd settle for just being able to thread my machine. It's a b35 Bernadette model from Bernina (their cheap line, not the normal expensive models). The store has classes, but they require you bring your own machine to class, which is ridiculous. Getting it home in the bus was hard enough.
I couldn't imagine having to bring my own machine to a sewing class!! Hauling it anywhere without thonking on a wall is nearly impossible 🤣
Great video! I like your tips, and your suggestions about doing it second hand. I've always loved vintage sewing notions. I had to forbid myself from buying more and more and more a few years back. 😀
Someday (probably not during #nobuy25) I'd like to do a video about finding a machine secondhand and rehabbing it to use at home. But I'm worried it would become an addiction and I'd have dozens of vintage but functional machines all over my house!
You totally would! LOL
Thank you for this awesome video! Great tips!
I'm so happy you enjoyed it!
✔️ Scatterbrained ✔️ Raging ADHD ✔️ Need dopamine (and more importantly, tips) Here we go! Thanks for the tips!
We are birds of a feather here!!
Hello 👋🏼 First ☺️♥️♥️♥️
Hi! I'm happy you're here!
Oh man the pop sewing thing, those kits look awesome and I’m tempted to make my husband get one and pick one out for myself and call it a date night 😂 he did leather working as a kid and I’ve never
I think that's a great idea!! Their kits are really fun to put together and you get to wear it around forever!
The scraps and pieces of old clothing that can't be thrown away...my eternal battle. Argh! Then the paralysis that comes from the overwhelm of not throwing away the scraps for years and the massive dopamine hit that you get when you finally have the project that allows you to use up a whole bunch of scraps at once. It is unreasonably addictive. Ugh!
Everything you said resonates with me to my core!!
There's a way to turn a blanket into a jacket without cutting out pieces. Absolutely no waste. You cut down on one narrow end half the depth of your sleeves then in on each side to free the front to wrap around you. Two yoke seams and two sleeve seams and done.
8 mins in, snd the sewing had not started yet, I am in love with you, when i sew something it's like it had to be perfect or it's rubbish, there's no in-between. But this, THIS was such a breath of fresh air!
❤
Looks like singer featherweight bobbins. Zipper foot for singer.
OMG, this hit home❤, currently I have been transforming my space everyday. Now on day 4, it's addictive 😊 once started. I love watching you, ty❤
I've adapted it into a dress with an elastic waist.
Nice!!
Ooh, scary… but I think I’m in. I finished a long delayed (because boring) mending job today so that’s a good start, I hope. I have too much yarn and too much fabric and too much EVERYTHING except money, so yeah. I am in. 😅
I like it. I collect projects, but don’t make them. But neither will I make something that I have no interest in now, just to use up “stuff”.
Cool 😀
Very pretty 😀
Very pretty 😀
Happy New year, and good luck with the challenge, I have many projects on the go, but some are open ended, so I will endeavour to keep to the rules. ❤
"Success is the ability to go from failure to failure without the loss of enthusiasm. " -Winston Churchill
I will 100% be joining for the January mini challenge. I have a Christmas dress and a petticoat that are so close to being finished and have been languishing form months/weeks
I am not a maker, but i am a collector of lots of stuff. Regarding my ‘projects’, I am going to allow buying things to finish said project. I don’t foresee a need for clothes or household items (except for a small lamp), so hopefully I will stick to this. I have been diligently cleaning out but still HAVE SO MUCH. I JUST WANT EVERYTHING BEHIND A DOOR. at least. I may be approaching functional, thanks to Dana K White and her decluttering process. Anyway, good luck! I give it 4 months before you justify and succumb to temptation, ha!
Im doing a no buy year too. Heaven help me. I need to do a small declutter but not too much, just a couple of bags. Sadly I don’t know how to make my own clothes so I can’t do that one. Im also gonna try a no gift year, where no one spends money on me for my 40th in June and Christmas 2025.
My family did a no-gift Christmas this year and it was wonderful! I took totes of stuff I had made over the year for anyone that wanted anything, but there was no obligation to buy anything special for anyone and I'm hoping it'll be our new tradition.
