“Communing with Nature: The practice of going into the natural world and bonding deeply with the healing power of the wild is the most ancient, primordial path of emotional and spiritual cultivation we know....”
My two favorite things in life are nature and being physically active. I like to combine the two by exploring the outdoors by canoeing, kayaking, hiking, snowshoeing, camping, etc. Now that I’m retired I thought I’d start documenting my experiences not only for my own enjoyment but to also share with others who have an appreciation for the beauty of wild places and the denizens who call these places home. Hopefully this channel will inspire you to get out there, whether it’s for a month long canoe expedition or an afternoon stroll in the park and do your own communing with nature.

I live in an off-grid cabin in the Northwoods of Minnesota. In the middle of nowhere along the Nemadji River. Which flows into the deep, cold, expanse of Lake Superior. My closet neighbors are the denizens of the forest; coyotes, bobcats, wolves, deer and bear, just to name a few. Along with a variety of birds that visit my feeders every winter. In addition to putting out birdseed to bring in the birds, I also don't pass up an opportunity to pick up a road kill deer whenever I happen to come across one for the larger carnivores. Along with the ravens, crows, eagles and other birds that supplement their diet with meat during the coldest days of the year. Here is a short video of what I've ...

Great view. No wonder you're so good at finding moose and loons in BWCA.... Practice.
Absolutely, lots of practice.
Muy lindo video, lo único malo es que parece como que guardas todo como apurado, creo que aumentaste la velocidad por momentos y se supone que es un vídeo más relajante, me estreso un poco ese detalle 😅

That is called a Littlbug stove.
@ very cool stove.
@ I really like it, it cooks great, cleans up easily, breaks apart and stows perfectly around my bear vault.
@@nemadjihermitare there advantages to using this over the grates at camp sites? Less wood and more direct I assume?
@@RFC44 Huge advantage, a fraction of the wood and half the cooking time.
Thanks for a great video, sir.
You're welcome and thank you for the great comment, I'm glad you enjoyed it.
I am looking forward to my next winter trip into the BWCA in a few weeks. I was looking for videos to get my teenage kids excited about it and was shocked to find this video with the identical route we plan to do. I've been to these lakes and up to the trout lake you visited, but haven't fished it. What lures or bait did you use to land the brookies? They are a new species for me to target. Love your video quality and the lack of commenting to the camera. It makes you feel like you're there.
@@greymagnus Thanks for the comment and I’m glad you can appreciate my style of video. I’m an introvert and don’t like talking much so it seems to suit me. These brookies have a voracious appetite in the winter and are fairly easy to catch on the right day. Just put on a jig or small spoon and add a dead minnow and you should be able to get your limit in no time. Good luck, it’s a beautiful area.
@@nemadjihermit An introvert recognizes and appreciates an introvert. Thanks for the tip on minnows. I've fished for everything else in the BW, but not yet brookies, so I appreciate the advice. When I was there this past spring, the prime campsite on that lake was taken and we didn't want to stay at the other site on the lake, so we hauled all our stuff back down the portage and stayed at the lake below. It was a major bummer.
@@nemadjihermit I've also got a lot of the same gear, so it was like watching myself do the trip. Pretty funny
@@greymagnus The last campsite on Clearwater is ideal, but I also like the first campsite on West Pike if you want to go through the portage.
@@nemadjihermit I know the one on West Pike. I stayed at that one canoe camping in the spring of '23. We day tripped through Clearwater to Mountain and saw the site on Clearwater. It's been in my mind ever since. Looking forward to getting back there in a couple weeks.
Curious as to how many or size of the memory cards you take? And battery packs.... I cant wait for permit day

Very enjoyable and relaxing video …. and the best paddle mechanics and boat handling out there on YT. The instructor part of my brain however wishes the PFD were properly worn instead of lying in the canoe.
@@canoeron Thank you very much, I’m glad you enjoyed it. And also thanks for the compliment on my paddling technique, high praise indeed. I guess that comes with 50+ years of canoeing experience along with a bit of complacency I’m afraid.

Thank you very much, I’m glad you enjoyed it. And thank you as well for the compliment, I guess it comes from fifty plus years of paddle experience, accompanied with some complacency I suppose.
As a fellow soloist and fan of your videos-you hit another grand slam.... may i ask what cameras you are using? And the back canoe mount? I may take another try a videoing my next trip. Thanks again
@@oolddscchhool5826 Thank you very much, your comment is much appreciated. I’m just using GoPro’s with Scotty mounts on the front and back of the canoe. Filming can be inconvenient and frustrating but I think the results are well worth it once the trip is over and you’re reviewing the footage once the trip is over. Just stick with it, it does get easier. Good luck.
Your first night it looks like you camped along the river. Is that a new site? It's been a few years since I've been on the river, but I don't remember there ever being any sites.
@@ethangknuti Yes, it is a new site that wasn’t marked on my map. I found out about it when I talked to the ranger while getting my permit. I spent the last night on the river as well which is also a new site.
. I own a prism that looks pretty similar to your voyager. Love that boat. I do mostly Everglades long range paddles among other Florida trips. We have to tote all our water for however long the trip is and I always wonder if a voyager would have been a better choice. You do a great job on these videos. The extra effort it takes to get some of your shots is stellar. Well done.
@@Saltfly I’ve never padded a prism, but since it’s shorter and wider I assume it’s slower and more stable. Better for some people. Interesting, an Everglades trip is high on my bucket list. I was under the impression that a kayak would be more appropriate than a canoe. But maybe I’ll rethink that. Glad you like my videos and thanks for the comment.

You put a lot of effort into your filming and it shows. The paddling away shots take time and thought. Been through most of this route you were on but only in early May just after ice out so looks so different in the summer, especially all the calm days you had, nice!
