    every time someone spends big money on a wolverine 1 or a new mutants 98, I want to scream. those were printed in the hundreds of thousands, that means, if there are currently 80,000 comic collectors, there are 4 to 10 copies of those comics for each collector. not only are they not rare, they are common.

    "census rarity" I like that phrase. This idea of actual rarity vs census rarity is key to understand. Someone should draw a Venn diagram of census count, issue significance, and demand; if you only have 2 of those, your book might not be as valuable as you think. Not saying it's not worth anything, just saying it's not worth as much as you think. Or there are factors that limit how valuable a book can be.

  • @kennythecomiccollector

    Great stuff bro. I would say that the two CGC 9.8's of a comic that I own are census rare. If there's another phrase for saying there are none other on the census than these two that I own, than that it would be that. In addition, I would say that the comic itself could be considered scare/ghost. It's a 1:10 ratio with a print run of Cover A being around 4,850. That would put the max copies of this 1:10 in the 400s, maybe less. I own a total of 4 copies--two graded and two raw. What can I say, it's one of my favorite comics! 🙂

    I got a 9.2 green label on a web of spidey 118 because the cover was slightly detached from the top staple. Staple was still there and staple was still holding the whole book together. I thought green was for missing pages and unverified sigs???

    • @jeffstanley6013
      @jeffstanley6013 21 час назад

      The green Qualified label is also used when a book appears to be one grade but for one significant flaw. CGC then has the option of either giving the book the higher grade with the green label or a lower grade with the blue label.

    Back in 1999 I sold a comic on eBay that had a small date stamp on the front cover. Got a complaint from the buyer, even though the listing photo clearly showed the stamp. But I did not describe the date stamp in the description. I sent him a scan of the Overstreet grading guide that stated that small date stamps that do distract from the cover art do not affect the grade. Buyers response was “never heard of Overstreet”

    CGC once misgraded an entire 25 book submission of mine as 9.0 (zero grader notes, of course). It's why I haven't bothered to contact customer service regarding bendgate. I talked to several CS reps about the submission and they told me what happened couldn't happen. Even though it would've been super easy to verify they made a mistake, they wouldn't even entertain the idea if I paid for everything. They simply can't admit that kind of wrong-doing. I cracked and re-submitted and most got a 9.8 without pressing in-between. It's probably an exceedingly rare mistake, but you never know. Props on fixing that Superman label.

    Great breakdown on that 9.0. I generally lay my comic on the backing board (Silver/Gold size which is larger than the comic), and slide it into the bag. Doing it that way greatly reduces the chances of the book sliding along the inside of the bag. IMO: to show transparency in the grading process, there should be graders notes for anything less than a 10. That’s likely not to happen though. 🧐

  • @chi-tn

    • @melw2100

      Generally they look at the staples and see if the cover holes match the staples. If the spine was leaf casted and the staple holes are made in the leaf casting to match the book the grader would not know the cover was married.

    one of Frazettas favourite lies was that he never uses reference of any kind, and all his work comes from his imagination. Of course we know this is not true, in fact he used reference all the time tracing offf images of himself in different poses, swiping poses from other artists like Foster, or recruiting other artists to do some of the work for him. He would do flashy work for himself and claim it was a commission. He also gives almost no credit to his wife, which is very strange, perhaps because her advice was to give up fantasy which was poorly paid and take up abstract painting-he did have a family to support....yes? He stuck at Fantasy because the mostly redneck fans idolised him and fed his ego there but in the fine art world he would have been regarded as lower than a flea.

    I have an honest question: why does CGC continue to be the market leader for graded books considering all of the problems that they continue to have? I don't have a horse in this race at all, but it seems that there are better options available. For example: 1. CBCS has more robust slabs and a more strict and consistent set of grading guidelines. 2. PGX has very compact slabs that fit all sizes of books including magazine size and they still fit in standard size graded bins. 3. EGS has UV resistant slabs and completely customizable labels. Etc etc etc. I'm legitimately curious to know why people still bother with CGC.

    • @AutomaticComics
      @AutomaticComics 7 дней назад

      This is why: 1) They have the majority of the market already. Like 95% of graded books are CGC. That’s a big moat, and really the most important part of it because most people then have CGC books and like their books to match. 2) They sell for more than the other graders. This is a result of #1. More collectors have them/want them so they sell for more. The difference in price isn’t quite worth the risk of trying to move a cbcs to a CGC, so that’s why that doesn’t really work. Higher value means dealers and facilitators are more likely to use them because they want to maximize their sale. 3) CGC does ultimately fix the big problems that come up. Haters can hate all they want, but generally CGC fixes the issues eventually. I complain about CGC, but they typically fix the problems. 4) The idea that cbcs is more consistent or strict than CGC is 100% a myth. Again, you’ll have haters that will scream otherwise, but it’s just not true. They grade the same for the most part, if anything, cbcs grades easier at low grades, not more strict. CGC just grades like 50x as many books as cbcs so of course you’ll see issues more often.

    • @AutomaticComics
      @AutomaticComics 7 дней назад

      And this isn’t me being some CGC shill or anything. I’m just stating the facts of the situation as to why people continue to use them, and why yes, I will continue to use them once this bending situation is resolved to my satisfaction.

    • @mrcrispex
      @mrcrispex 7 дней назад

      @@AutomaticComics that's great feedback, thank you for taking the time to help me understand. The majority of people already having CGC slabs and wanting the collection to match makes total sense to me. That's a tough hurdle to get past for other companies for sure. Spend a week or two picking off the more vocal people and people following it will start to think the threat is slowing down and that people who are upset are over it now.
