We're Sam and Duane: Parents to 4 children. We're beekeepers, we make our own soap, we homebrew our own beer, we're woodworkers. Demolition is often the only way - despite many good memories, we demolished my (inherited) grandparents house and rebuilt. Necessary upgrades required insulation, roof, all electrical, plumbing, interior plasterboard , new kitchen and the cost was more than a new house! Plus the original houses's orientation was inconvenient - it all came down.
Yes, the old house was quite small and we now have 4 kids so we needed more space. We considered doing an addition but it still would have cost a lot of money and it likely still wouldn't have been the exact house that we wanted. Building new made the most sense.

How much you think it would cost me to do my open basement like that
It’s difficult to guess. We finished out a couple of years ago, so the price of materials has increased since then. Also depends on the size of the basement and the type of finishes you choose. Our basement cost is approximately $50K to finish while doing all of the work ourselves.

Too bad the replacement home just uses standard "builder grade" stuff. No super energy efficient zip sheathing or anything. Why in this day and age are we not building better?
I’m doing a demo of an addition to my house.. there’s a basement foundation that will be filled in once it’s been demolished… however I’m not sure what to do with the service water lines and wastewater drain pipes… do i need to do anything particular with them?!? Or can i just hurry them?
You might be able to just cap and bury them but I would check with a local plumber to make sure that you're meeting your local building codes and not causing any potential venting or draining issues with the remaining plumbing.

Which camera did you use? Attached to the light pole or tree? Also include in the description which pole you used inside the house and the cost of demolition, the cost of the new built. Thank you!
We used a Brinno timelapse camera. It was attached to a electrical pole in a weatherproof case on the corner of our property. Inside the house I just screwed it to the wall. The demolition was approximately $8,000 and the cost to build was approximately $165 CAD per square feet. Prices have significantly increased since then though (we built in 2018).
Hello! Great video! I just wanted to let you guys know that the old white house on the corner by the daycare on your road will be up for sale tomorrow. It is actually my aunt and uncle’s house and the lot is now zoned commercial. Just letting you know because I’m pretty sure all of the houses on that side of Sprucewood will be demolished leading up to the trail, or at least a few of them, and they’ll soon have shops on them. I just thought I’d let you guys know since you live on that road too.

What did you use for the flooring under layment and finish flooring?
I used a dimpled underlayment that is specifically designed for basements. The dimples allow air flow under the flooring to prevent potential issues from moisture. For the flooring, we used vinyl plank flooring.

What is the sqft and does that fireplace heat it well?
The entire apartment is approximately 1,000 sq. ft. The fireplace helps to heat the room it's in but not much beyond that. The house has a gas furnace, which keeps everything properly heated.

What did you use as the white base that the soap sits on?
It’s 3/4” plywood that has a maple veneer. I painted it with a high gloss enamel paint and then a clear varnish to make sure it would be easy to wipe clean.
I have a rough in for a full bath but how would I make a kitchen work if no plumbing?
You would have to break the cement in order to add the necessary drains.

I'm so curious, as someone living outside America I would love to know.... Are those multi million dollar mansions in LA also made entirely of wood?
Could’ve done more by keeping and renovating the original house.
We had actually investigated the possibility of doing an addition on the old house. Ultimately, the existing footings were not sufficient to support a 2nd storey and we weren't keen on using up a large portion of the yard to expand laterally... and we'd still be stuck with a basement with low ceilings. In the end, a new build was our best option to get what we wanted out of our home and yard.
